@sportstuber11 That's funny. Because there's like 98% of the scientific community standing behind the Global Warming theory, and every data statistic chart supports the theory.
Looking back now, I think it's kind of a shame that Dan Quayle didn't run for president after Bill Clinton was done. First off, he never could have beaten Gore (not that Bush did; that election was stolen), and second, even if he had, he could hardly have done worse than Bush.
These ex-military guys are all like this... they are obsessed with their time in the military, and they try obsessively to make everything else in their lives and in the world fit into that box as if it must be the most significant thing to everyone else as well. They do this (1) because they did not have or seek any significant experiences before or after that, and because (2) fundamentally they are not very interesting, intellligent or curious people to begin with.
@iVenge Stop hatin' on my man James Stockdale! In a debate, a politician is going to stress their political record. A businessman is going to stress his business record. And, in due course, a military man is going to stress his military record. Have you read anything about James Stockdale? The torture he went through? His determination? Or even anything he did after Vietnam?
Dan Quayle was widely ridiculed as being a drag on the ticket. But in this debate, he made a stronger case for his side than President Bush did in any of his debates with Bill Clinton that fall.
@MechTimber That's what I was thinking!! Word for word. There is not a single contemporary reference in this video, and the only chronological identifier is Viet Nam. Everything else: CHANGE! Health Insurance! and on and on is identical!

5:40 He ended up being so dead wrong it's hilarious. The only thing that would have made it more ironic is if Al Gore had said "Bill Clinton will never have sexual relations with that woman."
I blame Ross Perot for this. Admiral Stockdale was a true american hero and would have made a wonderful military or security advisor, but V.P in the age of media, debates and B.S grind was too much imo.
Poor Stockdale. He had nothing on his opponents. If Quayle talked like the way he was talking in this debate, he might have been more respected as the VP.

I am a liberal and was certainly anti-Perot/Stockdale. Yet what many other commenters have pointed out warrants repeating: For a summary of Vice Admiral Stockdale's heroism, read his Wikipedia profile. Value his hard-earned insights on history, philosophy, and leadership.

@seltian LOL...WHERE IN THE HELL WERE YOU LIVING DURING THE 1980'S AND 1990's? THE 1990's were much greater than the Reagan/Bush years. Bill Clinton was a true President who worked with both parties. Thats why this country prospered. Then Bush/Cheney fucked it all up. Dude, go back and study your history. Bill Clinton was the best!
I agree that Bush/Cheney/Reagan/the other Bush all fucked up the country. You won't find any disagreement there.
But Clinton was barely any better. He bombed civilians, expanded the death penalty, got us into NAFTA, screwed over the poor, and ignored the Climate Crisis.
The "prosperity" of the 90s only existed for a select few people. Most Americans saw life get worse and worse.
Gore looks like such a dumbass clapping his hands in the beginning, like a robot : D Stockdale is just akward and Quayle is kinda okay here, but that's a rarity for him so can't really compliment any of these three.
Quayle was? According to whom? Hear me out. I understand that you were probably just a toddler when this debate occurred, but I watched it as a politically aware 26-year-old. Quayle was and is a very, very intelligent man. The impression you have of him was created by the media in its effort to destroy him. They seized upon one or two little gaffes he made — and all politicians make them — and pounded them home in order to stigmatize him. Trust me, he was far, far from dumb.
I didn't introduce what I wrote to you correctly. I should have said, Quayle was far more than OK. We certainly agree on Gore, though. Although, we really have to ask, who is dumb? Gore, or a country that allows a con man to make millions off a global-warming scam?
It is a very well established scientific theory, backed up by endless scientific and anecdotal evidence.
Almost every major scientific organization, from NASA to the National Academy of Sciences to the American Geophyscal Union to the American Chemical Society, officially accept that climate change is real and manmade.
hey I agree, I was neigbors with Dan Quale's sister, I was best friends with Quale's nephews for years. Well Qualye was a complete dumb ass. Gore was a good speaker, but now he was finally discovered for the global warming hoax and his career is in the tubes. So I'm happy there, because if Cap and Tax were to pass we'd loss millions of jobs. General Stockdale made both men look stupid and he was a scholar like what Perot said. Yet nobody knew who the hell he was,but still very smart man. Now can someone please post this whole debate. So I can make further analysis about it.
Jim Stockdale is a bit laughable here but he was an extraordinary man. He spent seven and half years in a Vietnamese POW camp. Two of them in leg stocks and another four in solitary confinement.
@TenderTrap86 Stockdale was 1000 times the man that both I invented the internet, climate change Gore, and mr. potatoe head, Quayle was...Adm. Stockdale a REAL man, patriot and American, puts the blockhead Quayle and slick Al to shame
@ITILII Indeed. Stockdale had a most unfortunate quality that unofficially excluded him from ever being elected a public official: he was a vertebrae. And, he would never tell a lie to the American people, even if it meant spending the rest of his life as a POW in Hanoi.
I love the fact Stockdale was drafted by Perot to be VP. I think anybody who puts themseleves up for elected office should be automatically disqualified. They seriously sicken me. I never look forward to voting.
Yeah Quayle Clinton really destroyed the job market during the 90's those were some of our bleakest years....oh wait. Well, he got the trust thing right about clinton
I do recall in the VP debate he totally nailed (ahead of time) that Clintons tax increases would hit $36,000+ a year, not just 200k he claimed it would. Much more...just the media got on him & would never report all he did as a Sen. & VP (& prior he was a millonaire. U dont become those 3 things being stupid). Obama said he was in 54 states, Al Gore didnt know a bust of Geo. Washington & ETC! Just the media lets THOSE slide. & Secret service said Dan was as nice to them as they get!
You don't become a millionaire by being stupid? LMFAO... apparently you've never heard of hollywood? or morons like Bush Jr that are born into money, or perhaps people like Al Capone... Real geniuses... Typical elitist ideology
This was a horrible debate, all the way around. But, aside from Stockdale's unpreparedness, and Quayle's "how did I get here" persona, the one thing that struck me, and STAYED to this day, was what a pompous blow-hard Al Gore was - and IS. When he spoke, it reminded me then (as it does now) of the guy who we ALL know who has never gotten his hands dirty, and has never done a single thing that didn't benefit him personally - in his life. He's talked DOWN to people his whole life. Total SNOB.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Get down on your knees tonight and thank God that Albert Gore never became president. As bad as Obama is, Gore would have been just as bad, if not worse.
Wow, Quayle's statements on Bill Clinton are beyond hilarity. Under Clinton the economy kicked major ass, spending decreased, taxes were decreased for the majority of Americans, lots of jobs were created, hell, under Clinton the government shrank alot more than it did under Reagan or Bush.
@sirpsychosexay Clinton benefitted from the onset of the internet, AND from Bush Sr. using the RTC to clean up the Savings & Loan crisis, the opposite of the bailouts we see today. Bailing out the S&L's was unthinkable back then. Our refusal to bail them out led to the great economy of which you speak.
@sirpsychosexay Yeah, and the blowjob replaced the "good night kiss" for dating teenagers during his tenure as well. History shows that people follow the examples set by their leaders. Fuck Clinton and his legacy of corruption and terror at home (WACO) and abroad (Serbia, Iraq).
@sirpsychosexay 11.5 million jobs created in his first term, 11.6 million in his second term. for George W. Bush in his first term: less than a million. that gives him an average annual increase of 0. for his second term: 1.1 million jobs, average annual increase of 0.2%. the sad thing is the fact that Bush entered office with Clinton's economy and destroyed it in 4 years.
hey im no republican but compared to his performance 1988 Quayle did sound alot more confident in this debate but vice president Al Gore took the show that night!
Qualye says under Clinton/Gore, jobs would be lost. My yearly income went up more than 4 times between 1993 -2000. 20 million jobs were created and the customer had a surplus for the first time in 40 years. Judge the GOP on the facts, not what they say they will do.
I'm sure the internet craze had something to do with that. During Clinton's 8 years the most money I ever made was $25,000 a year, under Bush I started my own business and now make $205,000-$215,000. I sure wasn't complaining when Bush was President. The only think Obama and the Democrats will do is raise my taxes, increase the workers comp by supporting silly lawsuits and add more regulations which will not help me. Now they want all companies to be Union. I would go under with that.
Ferrel, Under Bush, you made over 200K but less than 250K? Congratulations, you get a tax cut under Obama. Don't be so sure about Obama and tort reform, he might surprise you on the frivolous lawsuits. The Employee Free Choice Act allows workers to have the same bargaining power you exercise as a business owner. Henry Ford figured it out. You pay workers enough, they earn enough to buy the products you sell...Win/Win
If Obama changed the system with Tort reform I would vote for him next time. I doubt it would happen as the number one supporter of his party are the big money trial lawyers. Ny state is horrible with workers comp laws, here we have laws that not one single other state has. Some lawyer found a loophole with a law from the early 1900's and it made my comp go up from $500 to $5,000 a worker and I never had one single person get hurt.
if u think Quayle is a solid rhetorician either a) you are as dumb as Quayle b) U think that a good rhetoric is to say things like: ITS TIME FOR THE HUMAN RACE TO ENTER THE SOLAR SYSTEM,I have made good judgements in the Past. I have made good judgements in the FutureMars is essentially in the same orbit... Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, We have seen pictures where there are canals, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If oxygen means we can breathe...
what a propagandist that dan quayle. i think attacking your opponent like he does here, only shows true weakness. don't you have anything good to say about your campaign?
If you didn't like that you should have read about politics in the first few elections of the country. It was vicious. I think the attacks on Palin were crazy, some of the mean things they said were not right.
Americans shouldn't vote simply for the most likeable guy like the one you would like to vote the person you would want to have a beer with. They should vote for the platform, leadership and intelligence. Gore technically won the 2000 election. According to the majority of most legal experts, the Florida recounts would have shown that Al Gore won the majority of state of Florida. The Supreme Court prevented the recount. As of January 20th 2001, the US was plunged into 8 years of darkness.
He was still a stiff. He should've known better than to act like his own stiff self while campaigning for President, what with being Vice-President and all. I DO agree he was the better choice nine years ago, but his awful campaigning clearly stated the man wasn't as smart as he thought.
@argentozombi That's a lie! Gore is the one who cheated and screwd it up for 35 days after Election Day. Gore did not win! In fact, I have the OFFICIAL number of votes for each candidate in Florida: Gore 2,912,253 and Bush 2,912,790 So, Bush won Florida by 537 votes!
@argentozombi You actually mean Vice President Gore. I do not recall him being sworn in January 20, 2001. Gore has other things to worry about besides an election that he lost in 2000 period. His mistress should be consuming his time now since he threw away 40 years of marriage.
@TheRealKennedys crappy ancient florida voting system + overseas and mailed-in votes counted after incorrect exit polls via all media outlets including fox mixed with too close to call in one county in one state + recounting hanging-chad ballets from previously mentioned crappy voting system several times over + candidate with most lawyers and ability to drink the most coffee and stay awake the longest + courts = the winner with the most electoral votes
Why do America vote Democratic when things are shitty? When things get better under a democrat system then their going to vote Republican again. Shame on people for being ignorant. Dan Qualye said the exact same things Republicans always say about all Democratic candidates!
Thanks Dan... for proving that Bill Clinton was indeed the President we needed...all you need is the 1st opening statement from Dan Quayle...

Jim Stockdale is a bit laughable here but he was an extraordinary man. He spent seven and half years in a Vietnamese POW camp. Two of them in leg stocks and another four in solitary confinement.
TenderTrap86 2 years ago 15
@TenderTrap86 Stockdale was 1000 times the man that both I invented the internet, climate change Gore, and mr. potatoe head, Quayle was...Adm. Stockdale a REAL man, patriot and American, puts the blockhead Quayle and slick Al to shame
ITILII 11 months ago

Well, he got the trust thing right about clinton
pucpimp 2 years ago
I do recall in the VP debate he totally nailed (ahead of time) that Clintons tax increases would hit $36,000+ a year, not just 200k he claimed it would. Much more...just the media got on him & would never report all he did as a Sen. & VP (& prior he was a millonaire. U dont become those 3 things being stupid). Obama said he was in 54 states, Al Gore didnt know a bust of Geo. Washington & ETC! Just the media lets THOSE slide. & Secret service said Dan was as nice to them as they get!
aquaiz 2 years ago 2
You don't become a millionaire by being stupid? LMFAO... apparently you've never heard of hollywood? or morons like Bush Jr that are born into money, or perhaps people like Al Capone... Real geniuses... Typical elitist ideology

Bingo, you're right. One point, though: Obama said he'd been in 57 states. No teleprompter, you know.

What makes you qualified to be VP?
Al Gore: "I invented the internet"
Quayle: "I was known as the chief grave robber of my state"
Stockdale: "I know how governments... American governments... can be... ... ..."

Gore wouldve been a better president than bush, but gosh is the guy weird.... Quayle just sucked period, and so did Stockdale.
mrwario1 2 years ago
This was a horrible debate, all the way around. But, aside from Stockdale's unpreparedness, and Quayle's "how did I get here" persona, the one thing that struck me, and STAYED to this day, was what a pompous blow-hard Al Gore was - and IS. When he spoke, it reminded me then (as it does now) of the guy who we ALL know who has never gotten his hands dirty, and has never done a single thing that didn't benefit him personally - in his life. He's talked DOWN to people his whole life. Total SNOB.

Wow, what a group! I remember watching this debate.
Dan Quayle, egads.
James Stockdale -- with all due respect to the man's character, what a terrible choice for VP.
Al Gore -- comes across as intelligent and well-spoken, but has an air of phoniness about him.
What a ghastly trio!

mtf10 2 years ago 4
Wow, Quayle's statements on Bill Clinton are beyond hilarity. Under Clinton the economy kicked major ass, spending decreased, taxes were decreased for the majority of Americans, lots of jobs were created, hell, under Clinton the government shrank alot more than it did under Reagan or Bush.
Overall, lol.
sirpsychosexay 2 years ago 11
@sirpsychosexay Clinton benefitted from the onset of the internet, AND from Bush Sr. using the RTC to clean up the Savings & Loan crisis, the opposite of the bailouts we see today. Bailing out the S&L's was unthinkable back then. Our refusal to bail them out led to the great economy of which you speak.
HypnosisForInsomnia 1 year ago
@sirpsychosexay Yeah, and the blowjob replaced the "good night kiss" for dating teenagers during his tenure as well. History shows that people follow the examples set by their leaders. Fuck Clinton and his legacy of corruption and terror at home (WACO) and abroad (Serbia, Iraq).

@djs259 What's wrong with the blowjob replacing the goodnight kiss? That's awesome!
DEConnoisseur 1 year ago
@sirpsychosexay 11.5 million jobs created in his first term, 11.6 million in his second term. for George W. Bush in his first term: less than a million. that gives him an average annual increase of 0. for his second term: 1.1 million jobs, average annual increase of 0.2%. the sad thing is the fact that Bush entered office with Clinton's economy and destroyed it in 4 years.

Qualye says under Clinton/Gore, jobs would be lost. My yearly income went up more than 4 times between 1993 -2000. 20 million jobs were created and the customer had a surplus for the first time in 40 years. Judge the GOP on the facts, not what they say they will do.
lucki39284 2 years ago 3
I'm sure the internet craze had something to do with that. During Clinton's 8 years the most money I ever made was $25,000 a year, under Bush I started my own business and now make $205,000-$215,000. I sure wasn't complaining when Bush was President. The only think Obama and the Democrats will do is raise my taxes, increase the workers comp by supporting silly lawsuits and add more regulations which will not help me. Now they want all companies to be Union. I would go under with that.
ferret6677 2 years ago 2
Ferrel, Under Bush, you made over 200K but less than 250K? Congratulations, you get a tax cut under Obama. Don't be so sure about Obama and tort reform, he might surprise you on the frivolous lawsuits. The Employee Free Choice Act allows workers to have the same bargaining power you exercise as a business owner. Henry Ford figured it out. You pay workers enough, they earn enough to buy the products you sell...Win/Win
lucki39284 2 years ago
If Obama changed the system with Tort reform I would vote for him next time. I doubt it would happen as the number one supporter of his party are the big money trial lawyers. Ny state is horrible with workers comp laws, here we have laws that not one single other state has. Some lawyer found a loophole with a law from the early 1900's and it made my comp go up from $500 to $5,000 a worker and I never had one single person get hurt.

He's certainly more articulate than Sarah Palin, but so are most four-year-olds, so that's not really saying much.
newmark401 2 years ago
if u think Quayle is a solid rhetorician either a) you are as dumb as Quayle b) U think that a good rhetoric is to say things like: ITS TIME FOR THE HUMAN RACE TO ENTER THE SOLAR SYSTEM,I have made good judgements in the Past. I have made good judgements in the FutureMars is essentially in the same orbit... Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, We have seen pictures where there are canals, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If oxygen means we can breathe...

Gore is a stiff.
He would've been preferable to Bush, but is still a stiff.
MickTaylor 2 years ago
Americans shouldn't vote simply for the most likeable guy like the one you would like to vote the person you would want to have a beer with. They should vote for the platform, leadership and intelligence. Gore technically won the 2000 election. According to the majority of most legal experts, the Florida recounts would have shown that Al Gore won the majority of state of Florida. The Supreme Court prevented the recount. As of January 20th 2001, the US was plunged into 8 years of darkness.
0762798 2 years ago 4
He was still a stiff. He should've known better than to act like his own stiff self while campaigning for President, what with being Vice-President and all. I DO agree he was the better choice nine years ago, but his awful campaigning clearly stated the man wasn't as smart as he thought.

@argentozombi That's a lie! Gore is the one who cheated and screwd it up for 35 days after Election Day. Gore did not win! In fact, I have the OFFICIAL number of votes for each candidate in Florida: Gore 2,912,253 and Bush 2,912,790 So, Bush won Florida by 537 votes!

@ILovestorms The people from Bush's campaign were the ones who counted the votes and made those numbers dude!

that takes a man.

@argentozombi You actually mean Vice President Gore. I do not recall him being sworn in January 20, 2001. Gore has other things to worry about besides an election that he lost in 2000 period. His mistress should be consuming his time now since he threw away 40 years of marriage.

Isn't it so funny watching these debates?
Mr. Gore's opening statement is SO similar to the campaign Obama ran this last election...even down to the "we can't take four more years of Bush."
I wonder if all elections are this similar in content.
