If you are trying to compare this performance w/Simionato and say that this one is better, than I have nothing to add, as you do not hear the real evenness due to the quality of older recording of Simionato, but I am sure that if you heard Simionato live, you would not even compare them....that is why opera dies, very few people understand the difference.
Mezzos like Luciana D'Intino and Stephanie Blythe....they just make take your breath away, make your heart stop and then bring you back to life, again and again!! She is phenomenal! Check out her recording of 'La Gioconda', with Violetta Urmana in the lead role and Placido Domingo. It is such a high calibre of singing all round that you simply wont believe it! But of her own merit, I feel a part of a GREAT LEGEND, being alive when she's at the height of her career. Eviva Luciana!! Bravissima!!
@AlcidesConstante I'm so delighted that you liked her. I thought you would. She's just about the best dramatic mezzo I've ever heard. Perhaps even better than Dolora Zajick at her best.
@rubyedelman I did check out Simionato. I really think that D'Intino's is the better performance. To my ear, the vocal tone is better, the voice much more even, and the interpretation superior.
@arpeggio1358 Wow! What a pleasant surprise! She is really brilliant! Where do you keep finding such great talents?! I've never heard of her. Wonderful lower register! I really appreciate your taste:-). Thanks for sending this video to me. Thank God that not all the female mezzos sing like Bartoli! LOL
@rubyedelman I am a fan of Simionato AND of D' Intino. WHY must people compare or say that one is better than the other, they are both phenomenal singers! D'Intino enjoys the very same celebrity in Italy today, and for the last 20 + years that Simionato had in her day. Should God stop giving us talent.? Yessh!
Verrett and Troyanos are the best...this performance is quite beautiful . The nasty bloggers here will always find something nasty to say about any singer
In a way she reminds me of Dolora Zajick - fabulous voice but total lack of an ability to come out of herself and no idea whatsoever of how to move on stage.
It's not enough that singers like DiDonato and Fleming sing, record, etc....They even take over presenters' jobs...Does it ever end...It's a monopoly!!!! More power to the powerful! Basta!!!!!
I have listened this this several times, and it's not the model of perfection, but it is FAR from being a disaster. I ask, who is an excellent Eboli these days? Olga Borodina? Violeta Urmana? Wrong, and wrong. Anyway, I like D'intino's chest voice. If she had been THAT bad, she would sounded very wobbly and opaque.
Ulp! In my anger, I left off the most important idea: there are two people who need a slap here: one is the singer who simply needs a wake up call; but the REAL blame lies with the people who have pushed her forward ahead of her readiness, either out of their ignorance or because they just want to ride the wave, however short. Shame!
What an amazing voice but the technique, at least on this night, is very unfinished. She is completely outside the character and what I see is the opposite of a vocal or dramatic through line - but she is scoring points anyway on raw voice alone. If this is a typical night for her, that would be disappointing; we really need voices like this. This particular performance feels like a circus act: it is amazing to see a huge dog do pirouettes in a tutu - but is it art?
@laddnyc - And George Bush was president of the US, despite his lack of qualifications. But you make a good point: why would a rising or reigning artist be interested in the opinions of strangers? Well, even laypersons can see problems - and if enough people make a criticism, then the sheer volume of them gives the artist something valuable. And in a world where many think being supportive means to only praise, an honest opinion can be a gift.
@johndlabella With all due respect and IMHO, you seem to be in the minority in your review of this performance. Myself included. She is not the most interesting artist in concert and there is some history to this performance. She was not scheduled to sing at the benefit but filled in for...someone, I don't remember who. Additionally I would suggest that you are eloquently expressing opinions that resemble "contempt prior to investigation" since there are many of her performances on here.
That introduction by the admiring, but somewhat jealous lyrical mezzo is so funny.
Lucina D'Intino is really good here, and it is always a joy to watch her. (For an even better interpretation by Lucina D'intino herself type "lucina fatale parma").
I agree - the 2001 Parma version is astounding! This is not a bad account of 'O don fatale' but the earlier version is a real showstopper, as it should be! Why d'Intino has never made it right to the forefront of today's singers is beyond me. She hails from that traditional Italian school of mezzos (Simionato, Barbieri, etc), with phenomenal voices, ranges and a great sense of drama. I have watched her clips here countless times but never tire of them. Brava!
Why d'Intino has never made it right to the forefront of today's singers is beyond me.
ITS BECAUSE SHE IS A PROFESSIONAL SINGER WHO HAS HAVING LONG HARD WORK. SUCH SINGERS DON'T ACCEPT "WITH DIPLOMACY" THE TIRANNY OF BOSSES OF THE OPERA, AND THESE OPPOSE THEM
I'm not quite sure what point you're trying to make here ... however, I think you'll find that Ms D'Intino has indeed 'made her mark' on the opera world despite the fact that she has not become a household-ish name such as Garanca or Kasarova. While many enjoy her 'style' of singing, there are some who deem it too 'traditional' and think that this is not what the public want to hear - oh, how they are wrong!

I heard Luciana d'Intino yesterday in Suor Angelica as the Zia-Principessa, at Bastille Opera.
She was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G, the best singer of the evening with Juan Pons.
