  • I remember crossing the prairies way back in 1985 and as a Canadian one has to have that experience to feel the greatness of our country.Neil probably was thinking about our native brothers and their problems.

  • broken arrow was a code...an sos,,,during nam...it meant a unit was in dire.......

  • I used to be a broken arrow, but then I took a Neil Young to the knee.

  • Let's calm down.Century after century first.

  • Neil wrote this at the very beginning of his career and if you listen to all the pieces to this track, you can only amaze at what a great songwriter he is.

  • It is obvious the first verse is about the fame "Buffalo Springfield" achieved. The second verse referring to the changes a "young man" goes through from childhood, to manhood. Or the transition of the "Hippie Generation". A generation of free thinking, that took place from the "lemmings" of the 50's. The third verse referring to "death". The death of Buffalo Springfield, or the death of a "generation". Ask Neil, he knows? All in all, a great song. Controversial. Powerful. A supreme statement.

  • Lol...I never knew that. Is Nelly hott?

  • Ignoring a troll's loving product is the height of cruelty.

  • One of the greatest songs ever! Thank you so much for posting!

  • Interesting that the phrases "Empty Quiver" and "Broken Arrow" are DOD terms for nuclear incidents. Empty Quiver is code for a stolen or lost nuclear device and Broken Arrow for an accident involving a nuclear device.

  • An allegorical song of the American Expansion that culminates with the extermination of a band of Indians who fought their last battle only to be chased into the River where their last recourse was to fight it out with an empty quiver and a broken arrow. Did you see them?

  • I can't even express how great this song is. Defenitly in my top 10 favorite songs of all time. This is genius! Do u agree?

  • @classicrockkid100 Most definitely agree with you there. Completely genius.

  • FUCK THE LIKE BUTTON 5 STARS

  • one of the few great songs that gets slower as it goes on

  • Someone tell me what this song is about.

  • Check the description, I replied to you there. Yeah, everybody look at the description of the video for my interpretation. tell me what you think.

  • @pinkstarburst95 i was gonna try and explain it, i basically had the same interpretation as you, i think he references his first marriage as well, and him dealing with celebrity, i didnt even bother to interperet, we have about the same interpretations so ill let you take the credit, lol.

  • @pinkstarburst95 I think it's eerily reminiscent of Ken Viola's interpretation. Glad you read "Shakey."

  • @him3zz It's about them going to see the Beatles

  • @carloszambito It's about them going to see Justin Bieber.

  • @him3zz It's about the time you licked Nelly Young's bung hole.

  • @FuckngBastard retardo thats what you are, you cant explan so you make up shit

  • Thank God for Hippies...... :-)

  • @bradlo0600 you have been completel off the radar about my comment from the get go.......I honestly could care less what you think about anything....like everyone else in your life....i completely forgot about you & this stupid trend

  • 18 years of american dream. he saw that his brother had sworn on the wall. he hung up his eyelids and ran down the hall. his mother had told him a trip was a fall. and don't mention babies at all. pure poetic genius

  • Oh, hello Mr. Soul I dropped by to pick up a reason

for the thought that I caught in my head is the event of the season...

Young's comment on the fast rise to fame of the Buffalo Springfield

  • @bradlo0600 so you're saying Mr Soul is a bad song?

Wow....you should even be a fan then

  • where is down to the wire?

  • @RikJamezBich I was wondering the same thing. Don't think anyone uploaded 'Down to the wire'. Shame...

  • This is a wild song. what is that intro?

  • a song called mr soul

  • Hey please check out my cover of Neils "TOO FAR GONE"

    hope ya dig it

  • this man has not one bad song

  • @LizRichieBand I'm a huge Neil Young fan, but I wouldn't say that man...

  • @pinkstarburst95 good for you man :)

  • @pinkstarburst95 well are you special????????????????

  • @pinkstarburst95 mmmmm...I agree..NY & The Shocking Pinks......the Trans album...mmmm...not really my taste! Love love love the rest though!

  • @pinkstarburst95 Yea, Neil has been known to freak out a little at times.

  • @LizRichieBand i am the biggest of fans and in my opinion there are a couple thaqt i didnt care for and grew on me, but stukk a few that i just cant stomach, and i say that with the utmost respect for the man, he has totally changed my life, if it werent for his words "take a chance on love" in love and only love. if I hadnt listened I wouldnt be married right now...

  • Don't think it was live, rather a studio construction. That's Dewey Martin singing Mr. Soul at the start.

  • @NorthernExposure1966 Yes, it's not "real" live and Neil also sung Mr. Soul in a very similar version..

Happy Birthday, Neil!! Lottie, Sweden (also a Gretschie)

  • Can any one tell me what that live version of Mr. Soul is at the start of this song

  • @pinkstarburst95 I can't believe you would say something like that.

  • @BrokenChair88 Like what? I like his first album?

  • @pinkstarburst95 No, I'm talking about awhile ago when you said that the only good song on that album is "The Last Trip to Tulsa."

  • @BrokenChair88 Oh, I said that? I can't believe I said that ether. Disregard that, please. I love, "The Old Laughing Lady", "the Loner", "Here We are In the Years" "I've Loved Her So Long", "The Last Trip to Tulsa", even, "The Emperor Of Wyoming."! I don't care for the studio versions, but I love the live versions of "If I Could have her tonight", and "I've Been Waiting for You", on "Sugar Mountain: Live at the Canterbury House 1968." Witch, is probably his best live album.

  • @pinkstarburst95 I loved his first Album - such beautiful melodies. "Here we are in the years" is actually quite similar to Broken arrow - similar chord sequences and changing, meandering around - a real gem!

  • @goo110 Yeah I really love that song, there's something that feels so lonely about his first album in witch I can really dig.

  • @pinkstarburst95 "Here we are in the Years" with the marvelous set of lyrics:

Here we are in the years

    Where the showman

    shifts the gears

    Lives become careers

    Children cry in fear

    Let us out of here!

  • The events of the time have a way of shaping the tone and form of an artists expression, and though it may be difficult for younger people to relate to, it isn't so much about what you'd like to hear as it is being able to connect with a different perspective. This is about a "civilized" way of life, what people are aware of, and their inability (or unwillingness) to see the possibility of peaceful co-existence with the Native American way of life. A broken arrow is an offer of peace.

  • nil right in the center where he belongs...steven stills is an ass

  • Hahahahaha I wonder why? lol

  • @pinkstarburst95 The Loner, The Old Laughing Lady, If I could have you tonight, I've been waiting for you, Here we are in the years.

  • Looking back, I suppose I did make an ass out of myself. After all, you are a child of the 21st century, and we live in an age where people don't listen to albums the way they were intended to be heard by the artist. If you are reluctant to listen to the album "Neil Young" the way that Neil wants you to, then you should probably listen to "The Old Laughing Lady", which, along with "Here We Are In the Years", is arguably one of my favorite tracks on the album.

  • Looking back, I guess I did kind of make an ass out of myself. After all, I should understand that you, as a child of the 21's century, are infact living in the 21's

  • No. Listen to the album. And get a horse while you're at it.

  • tell me someone ...what is this song about ? been wondering fo years?!! I love Neil Young

  • how come this is on buffalo springfield's album as buffalo springfield's song?

  • @laxlaxlacrosse its another one of those jack nitsche arrangements

  • it's a quiver not quivered.a quiver is a leather pack that indians wore on their backs to carry their arrows.love this song

  • @bleelac it could be quivered since its describing the indian not the quiver. not that it matters that much anyway...

  • this is neil at his finest

  • When I first heard Joe Walsh's "Lifes been good to me so far" I thought the the little guitar riff was lifted from this song.

  • im not extremely knowledgeable about neil youngs solo stuff but does he have any songs that are very similar to broken arrow??

  • Well, if you're talking about weird Neil Young songs, no there's not alot. But there's songs from the same Era that are really good. Try "I am A child", which you can download the live 1971 version from itunes. There's also "Mr. Soul" which is his most favorite early song. My favorite would be "Flying on The Ground is Wrong" which if you search hard enough you can find the best version (1969 live at the Riverboat). "Expecting to Fly" is another one of the better ones.

  • @pinkstarburst95 thanks, i really like his surreal lyrics in this song and his voice. i know a lot of his popular songs and although they are fairly similar i really like these kind of neil young songs better

  • Try his 1974 album "On The Beach" which in my opinion is his best album. The songs were written around the year 1970, but didn't get released until 1974. Every song from that album is gold. And if you really try I'm sure you can find a few gems from "Neil Yong Archives Volume 1".

  • These are few of my favorite epic/trippy songs he's done:

Expecting to Fly, There's a World, Country Girl, Man Needs a Maid, Last Trip to Tulsa, Lost in Space, Misfits..not all necessarily the same in sound, but to me, work well together in sequence.

  • His first solo album, "Neil Young", sounds like a Buffalo Springfield album. It's got that classical bent that this song has.

  • @BrokenChair88 Steve Stills looks like a little choir boy....

  • Still does.

  • @BrokenChair88 what s the song at the end of the crosby stills and nash album that goes" winding past through tables and glass" well norm n. night the dj used to play the piano part over and over in the background on his radio program .

  • @spacepatrolman That, my friend, is "Country Girl."

  • @BrokenChair88 yea thats it I had a friend that had an 8 track tape of that ,thank you.

  • I love this song

  • Yeah, I'm with these guys. This track is the shiz bang bizzle fo shizzle.

  • Great song thank you thank you thank you

  • I know that its not a studio recording, but on the way home is on Live at Massey Hall 1971 and it is really good.

  • I really hate this band for a number of reasons (Buffalo Springfield) that is...

Richie Furrary pisses me off because we don't to this day have frikken' studio records of neil singing EITHER: on the way home OR Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing

NOT TO MENTION- this fricken recording you got here- only other member in Buffalo Springfield here is Richie f'in Furray

    But neil is mint

  • Thank you so much for uploading this.

  • Great Track.

    LOVE NEIL! thanks.

  • Held a broken arrow?
