@karac833 they were playing with prerecorded percussion loops. And that's an Echoplex tape echo unit that Page is manipulating in the middle section, not a Theremin. Theremin is an instrument played by moving your hands in proximity to a pair of antennae. Page is altering the sound of his guitar in this song by moving the head on the Echoplex. Anyway enough guitar geekery. This clip is fantastic.

@jfullerw the black box, its called a meastro echoplex. its like a delay pedal and uses a tape to record the delay. once the tape has ran through it loops and starts over so you can play over it. its not a therimin. page gets that sound by playing with a long delay setting. then moving the delay timing switch to a closer setting to get that sound like a plane taking off. its pretty confusing and i wish i could explain it better.
