I have copd as well (emphysema). I will argue with you about the statement that it's not a death sentence....it just depends how long it takes based on your level of obstruction, etc. When I was diagnosed I was already severe. My last pft was fev1 30% and dlco 19%.
Mike, since i watched this video the first time, I quit smoking. In April I had a spell of pneumonia and nearly died. While in the hospital, I told my husband to get rid of the cigarettes, ashtrays, lighters because I was ready to quit. I said, "I HAVE to, it's killing me, honey." He's been such a sweetheart, so supportive and gives me the inspiration to stay quit. I won't lie. It's a battle of willpower every day. Not a day goes by that I don't want a cigarette. But I know I'll win!!
Also remember that if your are young in your 20,30,40 and even 50's your COPD can also be cause by Alpha-1 Antitsypsin Disease. I have Alpha-1 and found out at 43 years old. Get your self tested and get treatment. Im lung affected emphysema and just had 2 severe attacks in the middle of the night. I do what is best for my health and try and exercise. Thank you for the video

Hello. I think putting your experiences on YouTube is a fanastic idea. As a student nurse it's important for us to hear the patient's own experiences. I hope that you are currently well. Would you do me a great honour of allowing me to quote you for a nursing assignment on COPD? I wanted to know what is the worst part of living with COPD for you?
I was diagnosed with COPD at 38. I have had pnumonia 7 times. I get deathly sick usually 2 times every fall and winter. It gets progressively worse every year. I was Hospitalized with the last to bouts and the last time I quit breathing and went unconcious for 20 hours. The thing I don't understand is I seem fine with breathing. I don't know I have COPD until I'm critically I'll. Flu and pnomia vaccines make no difference. I know every fall to get ready it's comming. What do I do?
@jhartist123 The flu and pnuemonia shots do not prevent you from becoming ill, they are to lessen the impact of the illness. Make sure you was your hands regularly and use a hand sanitizer afterward. Avoid touching your nose, mouth, or facial area if you can. Try to avoid being around people who are sick during the flu and cold season. If you must be around them you may need to wear a mask over your nose and mouth to help protect you. You should also eat healthy meals and exercise regularly.
@zmartinking I smoked 2 packs a day for about 28 years. There was a period of about 3 years that I was smoking 3 - 4 packs per day. That was when I was in the military. I was also in a work environment that was somewhat abrasive to my lungs as well. Automotive chemicals and asbestos dust, paint and lacquer chemicals, and the dust created in new home construction. In 1980 I lost part of my left lung when it collapsed and the doctors couldn't get it to re-inflate. I quit smoking Nov. 1996
@MrDietcokeman Also, before I forget, Please get a flu shot at the start of each flu season. This should offer some protection and help lessen the symptoms of the flu.
@MrDietcokeman Chronic Bronchitis is a form of COPD. It is primarily caused from smoking, however, the causesmay also be from pollutants and bacterial or viral infections. So you may wish to examine what might be causing your bouts of bronchitis. Should you advance into full blown Chronic Bronchitis it does not mean that you will or do have Emphysema. However, it is a good idea to have a spirometry test if you are feeling short of breath during normal daily activities.
Mike It's true that I live in the worst air pollution in the USA, e.g. Los Angeles. So I had 40 years of living in this soup, and 11 years of smoking + acute bronchitis as a child. I am wondering whether the outdoor exercise I assiduously undertook (in the interest of my health) did not after all result in long-term lung damage. By the way, thanks so much for your video.
Unfortunately COPD can also be caused by other forms of environmental polutants and chemicals. If you have been around second-hand smoke (even camp fire smoke) or exposure to industrial fumes then they may have played a significant role in the cause. Also there is one form of COPD that is genetic. Learn as much as you can about managing your COPD and talk to your doctor about pulmonary rehabilitation. The sooner the better. Good Luck and breathe well my friend.

COPD is a debilitating diease that affects everyone in different ways. Some people simply can't manage it well. I lost my Mom in March this year to pneumonia brought about by her COPD. I miss her dearly. Take care of yourself.
Hey Mike, I also have COPD. As it turns out, I work for a home oxygen company. I am on the list for a lung transplant, but am managing my disease pretty well. My docs can't figure out how I am still able to work for 45-50 hours a week, exercise and manage to raise a little hell now and then. My last PFTs showed a % of predicted of 26% Hope all goes well with you buddy. NEVER GIVE UP THE FIGHT!!!!!!

I am 47 yrs. old and recently diagnosed with emphysema (COPD) I've had ashma for years. What you said about smoking... I am still smoking. Knowing what I know and I still want to smoke.
Thank you, Mr Riser! I am an athlete and a dancer who has been smoking for 10 years. I've had COPD for about 3 years and only recently learned what this abnormality I've been going through really is. I typically go a week without smoking and then because I start to breathe better I start smoking again and then I feel worse than ever (complete debilitation, embarassement, light headedness) I am in the throes of a vicious cycle.
This is so helpful. I'm only 35. I gave up heavy smoking 3 years ago. I thought I'd got away with it - until I developed asthma. Nasty shock. I'm using the pursed breathing technique, and what you say helps me not to panic when I'm having an attack. What you say about taking control is so empowering. Thank you so much, Estelle
thanks for posting.

Smoking does not only exasterbate your current problems but will lead to a number of other pathology's that will make your life very uncomfortable.

Great, keep up the good work! Soon you will begin to notice that you are feeling better every day. Good Luck.
By the way, nice guitar work on your channel. What a great way to keep your hands busy when you feel the urge for a cigarette.
