  • @bloodandwhiskey10 i disagree that metalheads are too particular. i'll give you stubborn but i think rather they look for the guts and emotion, you know the soul the song...DRA does a great job on this AIC track. I love metal, love covers too! i think fans of metal recognize good musicianship. check out all the positive responses he got for his maiden cover "wasted years"

  • Metalheads are too goddamn particular about their music. Ryan did a fucking service to this song. Equal parts misery and hook.

  • Ryan will be around much longer than AIC could ever hope, he is the most under-rated artist in the last 15 years. He might be the second coming of Dylan. And what ever fool said he sounds like any joe shmo needs to pull their head out of their ass once in a while. Open your mind grasshopper!! His voice is distinct like Dylan or Young.

  • So censorship in the US is concerned about faeces?

  • this is the shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

  • I'm a huge Alice in Chains fan, and I love this cover of Down in a Hole. He did it justice by keeping what made it worth listening to in the first place, but delivering it with his own style. Well done.

  • please dont ever say this is better than the original ...shhhh Ryan is good in his own right for someone who sounds like any other joe shmoe, dont ever compare him to layne

  • why is it censored?

  • @corahof It was recorded for a radio station and the way the FCC is handing out fines for profanity most stations won't allow anything remotely offensive on the air.

  • Ryan is singing is balls off!

  • great great performance!!! jeessssssss

  • the three people who dislike this probably listen to lady gaga.

  • @kc42291 Why bother with the comment eh?

  • i like the cover better than the original. though they were both excellent.

  • okay, I thought Ryan was the original for this song... who is??

  • @alisue18 Down In A Hole is an Alice in Chains song, written by Jerry Cantrell

  • @taparoo101 Ryan Adams first. Look for the original recording in a cafe. He wrote that song the same day. Long live Ryan Adams. Frikin genius!

  • @alisue18 but come pick me up is ryans song.

  • Wow, Ryan, seriously amazing.

  • what are the tabs?

  • Is this the version on "Follow the Lights"? Sounds pretty close.

  • I was thinking the same thing. It is VERY similar.

  • Great cover version.I don't care who wrote it,a good song is a good song.

  • One the best covers I feel...just really stripped it down and made it his own. AIC should be proud.

  • haha owned. Ryan Adams is awesome

  • sorry but nobody can sing down in a hole like Layne he wrote this while suffering through his heroin addiction and I just don't think Ryan caught that feeling though he has been there in life. When Alice in Chains does this unplugged it can bring you to tears if you have lived that lifestyle which I unfortunately did. Still though I'm not a hater Ryan is an amazing musician!

  • Actually, Jerry Cantrell wrote the lyrics and music for Down In A Hole. Guess it was about depression. It sure seems like it was Layne's life story song though, huh? RIP Layne

  • Very true...good view of both sides on a great song.

  • @BTBAMBODIES incorrect, jerry cantrell wrote it

  • u are very right sirs, he did, i was thinking of nutshell sorry about the confusion

  • This song never sounded so good...

  • That guitar is dope

  • Crazy... he can smoke and still sing amazing... I don't smoke and i can't sing for nothing...

  • Yes, he is an amazing smoker.

  • he was. He gave up smoking last year.

  • Maybe if you smoke 5 packs a day, you will win American IDol..haha

  • what a cutie! Ryan can do anything, and I am so jealous

  • wow what an amazing job on down in a hole

well both really but i really liked the alice in chains cover

  • 4:57 is how you take a song and truly 'cover' it.

Even if you don't like his voice, the change, the pure form of this song is amazing.

  • starting around 3:57 makes me want to just like break down and cry

  • *expletive deleted* ruins song

  • does anybody know what key that harmonica is?

  • The song is in Bb, and he plays cross-harp, so that means its an Eb harmonica.

  • what is cross harp man?

  • Bb. He's in capo 3.

  • what a hoe man.... screw relationships like this... if some1 keeps screwing up cuz u love em and want it to work... cut em off without any knowledge in advance. just dissapear then they'll fell ur pain

  • you are small cutiepie

  • RYAN RYAN RYAN NOT BRYAN

  • canadian- this is a cover, they're not copying it. they made it their own. so comparing it to the original doesnt make any sense. they are like alt country band and they're covering a metal song. cant compare...idiot.

  • better than alice in chains

  • OMG... I think Down in a Hole sounds amazing...I don't know what you guys are smoking who said it sucked...

  • Yeah, for real. No I'm not stoned!

  • Come Pick Me Up is defintely emblematic of Ryan's superiority as an artist. I love this song...one of my favorites for sure!

  • Your right Jerry's guitar layering is brilliant...And this cover is missing the great harmonies produced by Staley, and Cantrell, but anywho still respect is given b/c he is doing an AIC tune

  • Yes the origanal version has everything you said-but this is a COVER! I think it's a great tune for him to cover and did you happen to notice the great conviction with which he sang it? Come on man!

  • sorry, i meant to do this,

canadian- this is a cover, they're not copying it. they made it their own. so comparing it to the original doesnt make any sense. they are like alt country band and they're covering a metal song. cant compare...idiot., again

  • First up, why can't you compare the cover to the original? Who cares what they've done to it... you can compare it. I like the original version better than this. There, I just compared it. Second, Down in a Hole is not a metal song by any stretch of the imagination.

  • OMG! Ryan Adams & The Cardinals are so awesome together. I love this version!!! Can't wait to see them in concert!!!

  • It's a beautiful thing when someone can take such a well known cover and make it their own.

Anyone that doesen't like this version dosen't like themselves.

  • WOW!!!!JAWDROPPINGLY GREAT!!!

along with jack white, ryan's the most important artist of his generation!!!! i love his music!!!seen him in manchester this week & was blown away!!! he's awesome!!

  • this is the everybody knows ep version right? theyve just dubbed the right lyrics in the chorus when ryan fucked them up at the start? whatever this is awesome

  • Seriously, that's how you take a song a fuckin cover it. I'm lost for words...cause the goose bumps found their way to my lips. Shit that was ill.

  • OMG, this is an awesome cover of Down in a hole. Never heard this guy before, but I'm a fan!

  • a terrible version of Down In A Hole !! ♥♥♥!! Love It!

  • No one is playing slide guitar

  • Pedal steel guitar...(@luthierjustin)

I think it's Jon Graboff. Andy Dick is more of a talker in my experience. Oh, and not a Cardinal.

  • ha i thought it was kinda funny.

  • i think all the haters of Ryan Adams' live performances of this song on youtube should watch this version. Man this kicks ass.

  • i mean Down In A Hole

  • Alice in Chains lives on

  • Wonderful...Ryan Adams is history in the making. Great great artist.

    Cig at the end...classic.

  • Great!

  • OMG! ryan i love you!

  • i love the emotion ryan has when he sings down in a hole. it's worth it's weight in absolute gold. he's just pouring his soul into it and this footage is just priceless. i love the fact that he's not even playing guitar on it, too. he's so focused in the layne staley role and in this crazy way it just works. you could just see layne smiling in the afterlife, hearing ryan singing the song.

  • Love it!

  • Dear Ryan Adams,

    Will you marry me?

    Love,

    Hannah

  • hey hey, i want him! lol but honestly who would even think about his friends when hes around??? OW!

  • Well, Neal's not too shabby! ;)

I'm with ya, though...hard to imagine screwing darling ryan over.

  • yeah plus he'd write a million songs about how you screwed him over lol.

  • Then blog about it.

  • exactly lol

  • yeah this is the studio recording on the follow the lights ep! wow nice!!!

  • this isn't the studio recording, this is part of a live set they played at a radio station for its listeners. lucky for us they got it on video.

  • no i still think it is, because the foloow the lights ep isn't with only studio recordings, theyre called cardinals version. so i'm not sure, but i really think so i guess.

  • oh ok so maybe they used this recording then on the album? that's cool. I haven't heard that EP before? did it just come out or something? cuz I know the songs they're playing are off his newest album Easy Tiger, so it must've been done pretty recently.

  • Is this the same down in a hole that's on Follow the Lights?

  • wow, great down in a hole!

  • Ryan Adams does a good job of finding the feeling behind, down in a hole. The funny part is that AIC was a great band with Layne and they had a great future, but I think Ryan Adams does justice because look where Layne ended up, just where he wrote, Down in a hole, 6ft under. RIP Layne.

  • I hear what you're saying, but isn't the point of covers to take the song and make it your own style, or make it something different? I think Adams has done a pretty fantastic job with it, it doesn't sound like the original, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's worse. Both versions are excellent.

  • wow... i cant get over this performance. simply wow. ryan is so amazing with the cardinals. thank you again for posting. down in a hole.. wow

  • great session, great man.

  • read about u writing a song on a pizza box, spare of the moment shit! U rock bro, and inspire the hell out of me!! ROCK ON!!

  • Ryan Adams friggin rocks...wwoooohoooo!!!

  • absolutely incredible.

  • haha, he left the "come fuck me" up and "full of shit" out of the song :D

  • He did say fuck me up and full of shit. The guys from the radio are the ones who edited the recording and left those out ;)

  • thanks for posting this! This session is incredible! Come to Spain man!

  • omfg - this is an awesome session - thankyou!!

  • WOW!!!! That guy's good
