@bloodandwhiskey10 i disagree that metalheads are too particular. i'll give you stubborn but i think rather they look for the guts and emotion, you know the soul the song...DRA does a great job on this AIC track. I love metal, love covers too! i think fans of metal recognize good musicianship. check out all the positive responses he got for his maiden cover "wasted years"
Ryan will be around much longer than AIC could ever hope, he is the most under-rated artist in the last 15 years. He might be the second coming of Dylan. And what ever fool said he sounds like any joe shmo needs to pull their head out of their ass once in a while. Open your mind grasshopper!! His voice is distinct like Dylan or Young.
I'm a huge Alice in Chains fan, and I love this cover of Down in a Hole. He did it justice by keeping what made it worth listening to in the first place, but delivering it with his own style. Well done.
please dont ever say this is better than the original ...shhhh Ryan is good in his own right for someone who sounds like any other joe shmoe, dont ever compare him to layne
@corahof It was recorded for a radio station and the way the FCC is handing out fines for profanity most stations won't allow anything remotely offensive on the air.
sorry but nobody can sing down in a hole like Layne he wrote this while suffering through his heroin addiction and I just don't think Ryan caught that feeling though he has been there in life. When Alice in Chains does this unplugged it can bring you to tears if you have lived that lifestyle which I unfortunately did. Still though I'm not a hater Ryan is an amazing musician!
Actually, Jerry Cantrell wrote the lyrics and music for Down In A Hole. Guess it was about depression. It sure seems like it was Layne's life story song though, huh? RIP Layne
what a hoe man.... screw relationships like this... if some1 keeps screwing up cuz u love em and want it to work... cut em off without any knowledge in advance. just dissapear then they'll fell ur pain
canadian- this is a cover, they're not copying it. they made it their own. so comparing it to the original doesnt make any sense. they are like alt country band and they're covering a metal song. cant compare...idiot.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Their Down in a Hole cover was weak. It lost all the grittiness that makes that song so great. Also, the acoustic guitar player just plays the chords, not the actual notes. And it is not the same without the electric guitar soloing over the acoustic.
Your right Jerry's guitar layering is brilliant...And this cover is missing the great harmonies produced by Staley, and Cantrell, but anywho still respect is given b/c he is doing an AIC tune
Yes the origanal version has everything you said-but this is a COVER! I think it's a great tune for him to cover and did you happen to notice the great conviction with which he sang it? Come on man!
canadian- this is a cover, they're not copying it. they made it their own. so comparing it to the original doesnt make any sense. they are like alt country band and they're covering a metal song. cant compare...idiot., again
First up, why can't you compare the cover to the original? Who cares what they've done to it... you can compare it. I like the original version better than this. There, I just compared it. Second, Down in a Hole is not a metal song by any stretch of the imagination.
along with jack white, ryan's the most important artist of his generation!!!! i love his music!!!seen him in manchester this week & was blown away!!! he's awesome!!
this is the everybody knows ep version right? theyve just dubbed the right lyrics in the chorus when ryan fucked them up at the start? whatever this is awesome
i love the emotion ryan has when he sings down in a hole. it's worth it's weight in absolute gold. he's just pouring his soul into it and this footage is just priceless. i love the fact that he's not even playing guitar on it, too. he's so focused in the layne staley role and in this crazy way it just works. you could just see layne smiling in the afterlife, hearing ryan singing the song.
no i still think it is, because the foloow the lights ep isn't with only studio recordings, theyre called cardinals version. so i'm not sure, but i really think so i guess.
oh ok so maybe they used this recording then on the album? that's cool. I haven't heard that EP before? did it just come out or something? cuz I know the songs they're playing are off his newest album Easy Tiger, so it must've been done pretty recently.
Ryan Adams does a good job of finding the feeling behind, down in a hole. The funny part is that AIC was a great band with Layne and they had a great future, but I think Ryan Adams does justice because look where Layne ended up, just where he wrote, Down in a hole, 6ft under. RIP Layne.

this guy totally ruined Alice in Chains' down in a hole. A man whos style is this soft and sweet shouldnt be covering heavy metal artists, great influential artists with vocalists such as Layne Staley. Please type in the original down in a hole by alice in chains and see how it was meant to be played and sung.
I hear what you're saying, but isn't the point of covers to take the song and make it your own style, or make it something different? I think Adams has done a pretty fantastic job with it, it doesn't sound like the original, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's worse. Both versions are excellent.

Metalheads are too goddamn particular about their music. Ryan did a fucking service to this song. Equal parts misery and hook.
