In my opinion the only other that did justice to this song is Brian Collins. I do not like the other versions of the song. Ricky Van Sheltons version is horific.
What was some of Jacks other hits? I love his voice, it sounds real not played with like a lot of music today.
I found another great voice singing this song if anyone's interested in hearing. His name is rocky standridge. I don't think he's a professional singer yet, but he should be. He sings this song and several other oldies very well to be so young.
The last #1 hit for Jack Greene on the Country & Western charts. It was the 166th #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. It also hit #3 in Canada. Now a question: Did Jack Greene ever appear on Hee Haw? Please reply if you know. It had just premiered on CBS when this song hit #1.
Whom ever thinks the David Riffin version is the "cat's ass" then you appreciate a tireless intro to nothing. I viewed it with an open mind and it sucks. Sucks big time. Whatever world you anti Jack Green critters dwell in. Well... dig up!
@minter74 different styles one in country which Jack Greene did his thing and David Ruffin is r&b he did his...can't say one did better than the other no way to compare. Both are great for their type and time. The love of music helps us to be open and receptive to all types of music and just enjoy...
This song, sung by jack is truly sung in a lifeless fashion. Especially the ending part. David Ruffin nailed it as he did all of the songs that he blew.
didn't build a statue, but did name a local park after him in his hometown of maryville tennessee just last month when Jack came home to visit LOve you Jack
Howie knew this was his story--he called me at 3a.m to listen to this song!!! I just said _"GO to bed Honey"---I'll talk to you tomorrow---A week later--He DIED!! How does one know????Jack Greene and Gene Watson sang HIS DEATH songs!!!!
one of the best country western songs ever, he sung it live at the ryman couple of weeks ago what an exprience to be there .thank you nashville ,i ll be back
One of the all time greats who should be in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Jack still sings almost every week on the Opry, and every week brings down the house when he sings this. What a great star and great person. Thank you Jack for the songs.

Statue of a Fool: Jack Greene: history lesson Pay attention.
Jack had been carrying the song around for some time and bringing it to many recording sessions. The Original title of the song was "Name It After Me" and for some reason Jack's producer, the legendary producer for Decca Records, Owen Bradley didn't particularly like the song but Jack had a lot of faith in it Only after the title was changed to "Statue of a Fool" did Jack manage to sneak it in and have the hit with it.
@charliebradley1979 Interesting story. I am always amazed how songs almost have a life of their own. If they are really good they will get themselves produced.
Roger Miller used to say to one of the execs at one of the record companies in Nashville, "you're the one that passed on Dang Me". Roger used to rub his nose in it at parties and events when he'd bump into Roger.
The exec said he could never live it down. But Roger believed in the song.
You know i have a soft spot in my heart for some country music, but this is a song by DAVID RUFFIN, penned by the legend himself. I suggest anyone who knows this version takes a listen to the real thing. This is an abomination.
Do not speak about that which you do not know. Jan Crutchfield wrote this song and it was recorded in 1969, by Mr. Greene, and was a number one single for him. David Ruffin didn't record his version until '75.
@hookem31 LOL Ok you got him before I did. Ruffin no way no how. Crutchfield wrote it. Jack made it famous the first time. Ricky Van Shelton the second time. But gotta tell a story. In Augusta Ga. a singer by the name of Bill Findley sany this song. His trademake song. Casey Jenkins insisted that another singer do the song. And he did. Casey ruled. In a club in Va. RVS' s Mgr heard John Clarke' s version. That' s the one they recorded. So maybe Johnny Clarke was the BEST.
@starr522 This was Casey's favorite song. I don't remember John Clarke's version, but I do remember Bill Findley, barely, that was a long time ago! thanks to suttersmith for sharing.
@scdonna Johnn Clarke only did this song a couple of months before leaving Augusta to tour other states and clubs. Bill Findley was still the King on this song. I think Johnny was best remembered for " You Gave Me A Mountain"
@johnboy2729 Yes.Maybe he thinks that the newer version recorded in the 80's by Ricky VanShelton is the original.Jack Green recorded this in the late 60's.1966or1977. I can remember it.
Or maybe he means that he thinks the studio version of the recording is better than him singing live.
In my opinion the only other that did justice to this song is Brian Collins. I do not like the other versions of the song. Ricky Van Sheltons version is horific.
