  • @SgtRock57---You weren't the only one in love with Petula Clark? Trust me, almost every boy I know loved Pet I know I sure as hell did. She had it all and though she's pushing 80 she's one of cutest 80 year olders I have ever seen!

  • The male dancer in the red vest who loses his hat is Michael Bennett the legendary Broadway director and choreographer of "A Chorus Line" and "Dreamgirls"!

  • she is great, too bad those dancers were there, they made me sick

  • It's a sign of the times that they don't make women like this anymore.

  • JUST MISSED!!! "A Sign of the Times" just missed making the Billboard's Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 8 weeks in the Hot Top 100 in 1966... This record followed Ms. Clark's No. 1 record, "My Love"...

  • I've always loved her voice! I bought a greatest hits album from the RCA record club back in the day. But the dancing and set in this video are some network executive's idea of groovy.

  • Petula I love you baby...

  • mistaken,oh well lliked the sound anyway...

  • My mom and dad had her album, use to here allot of the as i recall the album was called Pet Clark, might be mitaken

  • Omg... too bad that damn hat almost stole the whole show. All in all, it's great and natural... and way much better then today's crap videos.

  • I love how the guy loses his hat at 1:30 and it just stays there. I figured he'd put it on when the camera cut away to Petula, but no...it just stays there. :-)

  • This is so incredibly 60's, the dance, the choreography, the fashion, the cars, all candy for the eyes. Absolutely brilliant.

  • What show and year is this clip from?

  • Tommy James said that the 60's were the psrty and that the 70's were the hangover. Well then how many of you would agree with me after enuring these past 3 decades, it's time for another Party?

  • @jeff62rey , 70's music was nothing compared to the 60;s , with a few exceptions.

  • Is it just me or does the choreography seem quite silly, especially the "mechanic" under the car. But just like she sings, I guess it was the sign of the times. Hoppin' over to another site to buy one of her records. The 60's was when rock and roll music matured into a rich instrument, some of the best rock and roll ever came from that decade, The Supremes, Beatles and Petula are proof of that.

  • @SpazChat It's just you.....You obviously weren't there. This is the 60s. Colorful cars, colorful clothes, fun music, no super size meals, no fat chicks, no Obama, I almost forgot

  • @bhaggen , That's all fine and dandy and I can appreciate that as it was before my time, but I enjoy a lot of the music from the 60's and play it these days, but yeah, some of the choreography is a little silly. I don't like all the fat chicks, uh umm, fat people that have polluted the USA either. It used to not be like that.

  • @SpazChat You missed my point. It wasn't really silly. Nothing back then had to be censored from the airwaves. The most controversial song was the Stones' Let's Spend The Night Together...........

  • Noticing how modern her hair is and how that style made it all the way though the early '70s!

  • I'm blown away. I have heard this song a million times and never heard the cold ending. I thought it was a fade out. American radio never played the cold ending. It's like discovering gold within gold!

  • @Soxogram Pet sure knew how to sing straight at us through the camera! It's nice to hear from another who appreciates the nuances that make songs incredible! My 800 playlists cover a century of music from around the world. I think the magic of music is as much in the scores as the performers. My collection is thanks to the uploaders who post the music - hope you come check it out. Try this playlist link as a sampler. chuck

  • @Soxogram You never hear the cold ending because it was recorded just for this performance, with Pet singing live to a pre-recorded backing track. The album version of the song had a fadeout ending.

  • @scotpens Thanks for that. At one point, I thought the ending was pre-recorded, but it sounded so close to the original record. Then again, I listened the song alot on AM...

  • It must of been hard to remember all those moves for the dancers through the entire song.

  • You are right the girl on the right gets out of step at 2:05.

  • There are some mistakes because this was done live in front of a live audience on the Ed Sullivan Show.

  • Awesome choreography and dancing!

  • Thanks I loved the video, sing on Pet

  • I see I wasn't the only one in love with Petula at an early age (5yrs). She was real CLASS. This song takes me back to when my folks were here and I looked at life with wonder and awe at the future that awaited me. Man, those times were GROOOOOVY!

  • I,ve Always Loved Petula' She was my real idea of the real Love that Might come into my Life someday' which never did By The way :(...

  • @55painterman But even Petula Clark isn't really Petula Clark... ya know what I mean?

  • Totally Swinging 60's !!! Just those 3 cars would be well over $250,000 US dollars by now. AH300, DB5 & E-Type roadsters! I wish I had a time machine!

  • @432ps1 the 60's, always the best time of my life. I was 15 when this came out

  • All the hot Brit cars!

  • he lost his hat,lol

  • 327caprice Thanks for your post, it made my day. Thought they removed my original post but it's still there on page 11. Someone else said they had no idea

the music from their childhood in the 50's and 60's was going down in history as the best for pop music. Who can argue with that? Ha ha.. JD

  • Love the song, but REALLY love the Austin-Healy, Jag, and Aston Martin!

  • Wow- were pretty bold times ! They'll never make another video like this with the singer riding in coming on the hood of a moving sports car. So many things could have gone wrong in this production.

  • @scoopster19 your right and watch at 2.05 the gal in the red and white on the right lose her place then how quickly she got back into place....now days it would be cut, edit, etc...

  • @Rogapol lol very good observation!!! you must had the hots for her!! lol

  • @thundermaster41 Lol actually now that you pointed that out to me I think she is cute and I think made the right choice!!

  • Love Petula Clark! The dancers are excellent and fun to watch!

  • What TV show was this from?

  • To all the Petula Clark fan's out there---tomorrow is Ms. Clark 79th birthday! For her 80th birthday, I propose all us "Petula Heads" chip in in a couple of hundred dollars each and throw a gigantic party for her in Las Vegas. Anyone game on this idea? I think it would a splendid gift to a person who has given the world so much with all her great music. I am willing to organize it, if we can get all of her fans to back me up on it!!!!!!!!!

  • @chuckbuckbobuck

really wish I could, that idea is so FAB!!

  • 1:34 the guys hat falls off

  • Comment removed

  • love her dress!

  • Nice XKE Jag too!

  • @kunibear55--yea we had a balanced budget back then and we didn't owe the Chinese a trillion dollars like we do now. Back then we were shooting at them not buying all there cheap, crappy shit!!! I have bought three toasters in three months, all made in China, of course and they have all fell apart.

  • I have seen this now probably 200 times yet I never tire of seeing it. Ms. Clark just sings her heart out and the whole segment is top notch. I doubt anyone would spend the money that this Ed Sullivan sketch cost for just a 3 minute song but those were the days my friend, those were the days. There was real talent back then.

  • Love those '60's British sports cars!

  • Pick up that goddam hat.

  • Here's another one: Austin Powers says "Oh behave! Danger is my middle name!" It's "A SIGN OF THE TIMES" (Recorded October 1965, Released March 1966) by Petula Clark, on WB Records, produced by Tony Hatch. Dig those groovy pop art outfits!

  • Clark was already 34 years old when this was filmed in 1966.

  • Great cars! A terrific E type, AH 3000, and I believe the third one is an Aston Martin. What I wouldn't give to have those autos right now!

  • all those guys must be gay.

  • @webmail111 Well, duh! You think str8 guys can move/dance like that?!?! And ... just take one look at those asses!

  • @webmail111 Well ... what do you expect? You think str8 guys can move/dance like that?? And those asses!

  • Nice E=type jag and she would go well in the passenger seat LOL

  • Oh this brings back fabulous memories. What super music we had.

  • gotta love those colorful 60's outfit's................and GO GO Dancers!!!!! we need to bring back those colors today...I remermber ther 60's so well when life was so simple no computetrs no cell or I pod's no gadgets of anykind just you and the world

  • the dancers----SOOOO MAGIC!!!

  • Love to hear where people were when they heard the song and what it reminds them of when they were younger.

  • wow!what agreat decade and what a year.

  • This kind of Hip! sure beats the hip hop rap crap were stuck with today! Sexy and elegant. Rock on Petula!!!!!

  • @sterlinggreg I agree 100%

  • @sterlinggreg Word

  • yeah baby, yeah!!!!!

  • I was 12.... The costumes and choreography really put a smile on my face!! Hilarious! But the dances do look challenging.

  • You know....looking at the choreography, it’s not too far removed from the dance moves today in music videos.

  • Before there was Austin Powers there was Petula Clark! It doesn't get more 60"s than this! Groovy Baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Damn, I would have love to punch the bottom out of this woman..

  • @blueticecho Why her bottom. What did she do wrong?

  • @calihartley2010... What ?? I meant with my love shaft.

  • @blueticecho Well you are just plain disgusting. Get lost pervert.

  • deathdealer trolling

  • Groovy!!!

  • deathdealer herp

  • deathdealer you asshole

  • Drops his hat at 1:37. Priceless! ~~ And the hat goes on to steal the show, on the floor!!!

  • @Jinxterman69 Agreeed, but they should have removed it when they covered that next two shot of her and the guy in the car.

  • We love you Pet Clark

  • Great song, Pet Clark..yes where have all the talents gone is right! (Got to love the red Jaguar..classic!)

  • @rob34212 I brought that point out about a year ago concerning this song. In fact, I didn't realize "its a radial age" commercial was a take-off on a Sign of the Times because that song of hers didn't get a lot of air play on the AM stations in Utah where I grew up. By the way, that commercial is on you tube. The lady in the commercial looks like Godzilla because they made here so big in relation to the car she picks up. KInd of a cheesy commercial but what do you expect from 1968.

  • bring back P-town and all the great Petula Clark mixes they did!!

  • Its like walking back in the 60's - groovy

  • And 3 cheers for MrHatch....as u know....the super songwriter....!!!

  • Wow, the background dancers and backdrops are one of a kind. So enjoyable!

  • Absolutely outstanding!! Brings back a million memories- thanks for posting!!!!

  • Look at the color, we don't have that any more. What happened?

  • like the song , petula clark is really cute! i love the db5 astin martin(the gentlemans sports car),xke jag and austin-healy 3000 super.

  • This was on the Ed Sullivan Show. That show went live so this is a live performance in front of a live audiance and broadcasted.

  • After the guy drops the hat the other guy in the car can't help from smiling.

  • This definitely deserves a thumbs up!! It's wonderful.

  • Wow! In addition to Petula's magnificent voice, there's the costumes, the cars, the go-go boots, the choreography... This is just astounding!

  • There just couldn't have been a better time for popular music than the 1960s. So many styles, great songs, singers and groups. I was there but - alas - we don't know what we have until it is gone.

  • @HickysBoy

OH boy, i sooo agree, i hear these songs i havent heard in over 40 yrs, still know the words and then get tears in my eyes!

    the 60's were sooooo sweet!

  • Takes me back to my carefree high school days!

  • I wonder if a box of Smarties or MnMs look like this when you shake the box?

  • Her music makes me so happy!

  • I keep expecting Austin Powers to join in the fun.

  • I remember hearing this song when I was 6 years old on the car radio..riding around in a car standing on the front seat..no one used a seatbelt in 1966.

  • @MyBurtburt I have the same memories, but you're just a youngster. I was eight that year. :D

  • WHAT A VOICE !

    .

  • Reminds me of heading to South of the Border on US 95 to get fireworks on the way to Florida.

  • The world wasn't so much better in 1966. There was more race prejudice, more sexism, and,in the United States, less dissent over war and foreign policy.

  • Anyone else remember the TV commercial from the late 60's for BF Goodrich tires? They used this song but changed the lyrics to "It's the radial age, now the world is safer on a brand new tire....." Too cool, great times!

  • 1966 - the calm before the storm. Vietnam was looming on the horizon. Not enough soldiers had died to make a major social impact - but it was brewing. Two years later, the country fractured under the weight of the war and Nixon came to power. Few realize that this was also the best of times for America as a society. We were fighting a major overseas war, undertook the greatest domestic spending program in the history of mankind, and was putting a man on the moon - on a balanced budget.

  • @kunibear55 It is also the reason why we are in the shape we are in today.

  • I was 6 when this song came out in 66

  • This was the time when Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent just kept turning out brilliant song after brilliant song for Pet, and not just the million sellers but remarkable album tracks. The winning streak lasted an incredible five years!

  • I love the bright color outfits, would wear them today if I could.

Too bad these outfits wasn't made for four year olds.

If you want to know what I wore in those days, all you have to do is watch what Cindy Brady wore.

  • Too many comments to see if someone else noticed this. You can tell they taped live back then. One of the dancer's hat fell off during the performance. It is easier in live taping, to just ignore the unplanned and let it appear planned.

  • WOW! Choreography that does NOT resemble s-e-x...LOVE how simple things were back then!!

  • Just tuned to YouTube and Petula Clark. Remember when this song came out it was such a great time in our lives. and where are we now? 45 years later and looking back to a greater time. Sad what our world has become! Sir David

  • too groovy, absolutley love pet. saul, stars above texas music

  • Is that soon-to-be choreographer Michael Bennett in the blue cap, pink shirt and red vest? Almost certain that it is.

  • @UncleCharlieOakley You mean it's a future choreographer that drops his hat at 1:35 and then almost loses his balance? HA HA HA HA!

  • @brykmantra One, he doesn't drop his hat. It falls off. Two, have you ever danced professionally in your life? Hats fall off. We lose our balance. It's called a live performance. And finally, when you're a future choreographer responsible for COMPANY, FOLLIES, A CHORUS LINE, SEESAW, who gives a rip about trivia?

  • @UncleCharlieOakley: talented dancers that choreographed the flavor of the times. They are darn good. I'd like to own the cars, and the hat in question. Also, in the military, if your hat falls off during formation or march, it stays off, you fetch your hat later.

  • @brykmantra then the dude in the car starts laughing at him

  • Check the guy eating out the Aston Martin at the beginning! LMAO!

  • Great song...great dance moves...sigh..

  • It does not get much better than hearing a Petula Clark song!

  • Pet Clark What a great lady. Love this song. Where has all the great music gone?

    Sir David

  • @sixtiesforever1966 its still in our hearts and here on youtube. music today, depressing themes, no inspiration, and not much talent, electric altered voices, pre-fab stars...madness.

  • @sixtiesforever1966 TO HEAVEN, we all will be their somday

  • I think this came out in 1966 when I was 17. I remember the flowered suits the dancers have on and of the mod clothes. The music was fantastic, the cars were exciting and the clothes were to die for. For a teenager everything was fun, fun, fun!!!

  • This must be from the Spring of '66, I remember the first time I heard this, my cousin Ray gave me a ride home from school in the rain and I marvelled at how the windshield wipers were keeping perfect time with this great new song. I was 9.

  • @jdollinter Great memory! thanks for sharing.

  • @jdollinter I indulge in the details of my thoughts when I hear songs of this era. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. --Joe

  • @jdollinter I was 12 years old in 1966 and bought this wonderful 45 RPM at Woolworths for 77 cents. Loved your recollection ,and share your joy of this time in Pop music culture. Many thanks for the memories. Caprice.:)

  • @327caprice I can relate to that..we also had a Woolsworths and I bought a many 45 from that store..

  • @327caprice I was 10 and loved this song. It made you feel the feeling of this love even if you were too young to experience it.

  • They really took advantage of new color television!

  • great video, of better times. Good music, nice dancing, and even good cars, , The classic jaguar and MG show well.

  • @aerophorel

The cars are left to right, an Aston Martin , an Austin Healey and a Jaguar.

All British and all now very highly prized!

The whole video, the cars and the clothes is so "Swinging Sixties"!

  • This is a great video watch it

  • Petula Clark will always be one of the best. I've been listening to her since the 60's. It was a simpler time and less complicated. We nobody to blame but ourselves...

  • i just heard this song on the radio and had to come back here again.cant believe i was 10yrs old.i remember doing some of those dance steps there doing."hullyGully","Fruge",etc...LoL" =8^)

  • I was 15 when this hit the charts and it reminds me of my youth and when things were soooooo much simpler. Wish I knew then what I knew now. I would be dangerous!! I love Pet and this song. It makes me happy.

  • This song is a perfect pop tune. Strong lyrics and the song gets better as you listen. Did Petula write this herself? Fantastic voice and I love watching the dancers. You can tell they spent a lot of time getting those steps down. Very professional. It is kind of sad that someone does all that work and it only was seen once. I am glad that I can see this over and over again. Thanks for posting this gem! Those dancers can be forever appreciated now.

  • @gurlsingerfan Amen to that brother. Pet was the cutest of the bunch. Some of the pictures from her albums are fantastic and one asks themself "how can some one be that cute?". The song signs of the time came out in late 65-early 66 easy60sfan.

  • have we discussed the words to this song yet?

  • @easy60sfan What do you want to say about the words? I am glad you brought it up though, because the lyrics are bit more profound than they seem at first listen: She is describing growing up, a couple treating each other in a more mature and serious way, even with the fun backdrop still present. It is the crossing from puberty and funning around to real coupling in the adult sense. For a comparison, listen to The Beach Boys "Wouldn't It Be Nice". The boomers were becoming adults everywhere.

  • @gurlsingerfan I love the analysis, thank you. I think you're "right on." When I get finished with my current project (W,C), maybe I'll get to that screenplay about the topic of maturing love. I better hurry, got a part for Jimmy Carter! just a "pipe-dream" at this point. :-)

  • watch?v=ZhRFKi3t4v0&feature=related Here's one for ya, Spencer Davis Group from '67. What year was this Pet Clark song from? I'm thinking '67. The year I put on a Jerry Lewis Carnival at my house...it was a great success. I've been watching this to flush my mind of some important stuff I'm working on!

  • @easy60sfan this song is from the spring of '66

  • i love this clip. Great song and I love the dancing here. Very cool!

  • @easy60fan

In my heart of hearts I still think it is the summer of 1969 and I am sitting back and listening to all the great Top 40 music from that era--what a great time it was.

  • @easy60sfan

Good point but I am afraid I am a generation advanced (I am 55) to meet people on Facebook. Quite honestly, I don't get Facebook but it probably because of my age. I like how You Tube works and it sure great to go back in time and watch all these great clips when I was young and really enjoyed the 60's music. One more thing, Petula looked great in this segment--absolutely gorgeous. I know was I was 10 I had a big crush on her.

  • @chuckbuckbobuck Who didn't have a big crush on her? :-) She was the English pop mod queen, the girl Paul McCartney for us guys...:-)

  • @chuckbuckbocuck How do you like the way Pet crunches her nose just a bit at 2:48?

  • this a treasure that was off youtube for some time.. glad it's back! thx for posting.

  • Petula is 78 in answer to the question above and it was February of 1966 not October of 1966 this was first broadcast (I look it up in her web-site which lists all her performances on Sullivan and the Dean Martin show). She is still singing which is pretty damn good.

  • @east60sfan:

No problem, but if you ever find the time let me know. I am busy like you and have been plugging away on my short story about the 60's for the past couple of months. What I wouldn't do to have one week, just one week of rest and relaxation so I could dedicate myself to finishing this story. Ms. Clark is briefly mentioned in the story but it is about music and a trip I took as a 10 year old across the country.

  • @chuckbuckbobuck How do people connect otherwise than through the site like this? I haven't figured that out yet.

  • Was in 9th grade when this was on Ed's show. My Dad had a 1966 Pontiac Grand Prix and always listened to this tune on the AM Dial WDGY here in St. Paul, MN. My parents really grew up listening to old Blue eyes but loved her voice. I bought the 45. she must be around 78 now............wonder how she is doing these days?

  • @pkappel006 Was this clip actually from the Ed Sullivan Show? It looks so much like it must have aired in the UK with the road signs probably from that part of the world.

  • @easy60sfan Yes, I believe this was an actual clip which was aired on sunday night in New tork city. Just think, it was done so good and at the time was live. Those go go dancers or whatever were all great and back than, that was considered a big deal since we did not have cable or sat. TV and everyone watched Ed on sunday night, the whole familysat by the TV, most people only had 1 TV in your house back than. it was all or nothing partner....
