ROS made such a strong impression on me as a teenager and I remember to this day where and what I was doing when Robin of Loxley died.
I hurried back from a little Saturday job on a fruit and veg stall to watch the last ever episode with Michael Pread (who is just as gorgeous) to my horror we had family visitors who were less than sympathetic to my blubberings!!
Thank you so much for this clip. I have now watched this in peace and harmony after so long..... I am still moved X
can some one pleaseeeee upload this series. one of if not the best show ever have some that i burnt on dvd but are poor quality. I miss these good shows especially when the are so teur to the age. the legend will always live on thanks
@1313alphamale Its not that expensive to buy from Amazon, I have the Michael Praed series and love to watch it. Not so keen on the Jason Connery version that followed.
@vetrovfan thanks much and will look into it can you suggest any other shows that would be good to watch on here and what do you think of the new show with jonas armstrong?
This version of Robin Hood was the best ever. I agree with LadyNightthorn that Kevin Costners version was bad. I found it to American. It had some good moments, but Robin of Sherwood if bbc really succeeds in bringing the atmosphere and mystic of the era alive.
The first series were the best, the last series was over the top with all the strange creatures like the big wolfes, and the cloning of Robin of Huntington. it was way to much fantasy. (But Jason Connery was a good actor)
I loved the BBC's series altho it could have been done much better. Jonas Armstrong was great as a modern Robin and Lucy Griffiths as a modern Marian.
I loved this show so much! Michael Praed was and is the best Robin ever! The rest of the cast was brilliant and could never be replaced as well! Nothing Is Forgotten, Nothing Is Ever Forgotten!
I loved this series when it was first shown - I never saw the last scenes until now though because we had an electricity outage during the last episode.
HE DID NOT DIED! Herne saved him and he appeard in the end of this episode as the Hooded Man and shoot a burning arrow into the lake. And there is NO SUCH THING as The Third Season of ''Robin Of Sherwood'' :P
I like the little touch of realism in the hissing noise of the arrows from the longbows. It was supposed to be particularly effective when a massive number were all released at once.
Seldom do you get an incredibly handsome actor who can actually act as well as he looks and who physically fits the part perfectly as Michael does as Robin. And seldom do you get a scene that is scripted as well as this one does when it counts, most fall short because of one thing or another. It all came together, in one bright shining moment and will stay with me always.
@lessdone Very true. This particular scene where Marion, Robin and Much are on the hill, vastly outnumbered is a very special moment in TV history. At this point, Robin knows his time is up and has to sacrifice himself to save his wife, and Much. Clannad's music was a masterplan for this series, and when the music kicks in, I knew I was watching something very special indeed. Michael Praed will always be the definitive Robin. This has remained unmatched to this day. Truly brilliant.
It was such a brilliant idea to never show his body - of course they did it in part to have the chance for a next season, but still, dramaturgically it adds so much to the mythos.
I absolutely agree, this was the best version of the Robin Hood legend: great cast, good scripts, wonderful sets and music - perfect. ^_^
This was an extremely brilliant piece of work. This episode "The Greatest Enemy", where Loxley is killed, is one of the most emotional treatments of the Robin Hood story. I was only 9 when I first saw this, and I have to say that I was totally gutted when Praed's Robin met his end in this. This series will never be equalled. The recent BBC version was extremely bad beyond belief. I am very interested to hear that RoS is coming out on BluRay. I may even buy a player just for that reason alone!
best robin ever, rember this so much as a kid ,i was ever so sad when robin died but it was cool when robin came back as jason c ,for years i want them on video until a few yaers ago they came out on dvd and i was so exsited to see them again and it made me fell like a kid all over again
This series is so iconic even today and stands the truest retelling of the original folk lore, the roots of where Robin Hood came from. England at the time was still very Pagan in it's beliefs, with Christianity being the "new religion". Herne was worshiped as a protector and provider and himself based on a real person who was ultimately betrayed by his King. But that is another story.............. ;o)
This particular episode, when Robin gets staughtered, is the saddest part of the entire film. That is obvious, and yet, that is the most interesting and the most exciting moment ever. Not because you enjoy watching how he gets killed, hell no, but because you see how a man bravely fight alone against a crowd of angry jackals who finaly devour him. It is a very interesting solution of the scenario and it makes a biewr think over and over again about this episode, trying to find some escape...
@Dmitry336227005 Great comment! You summed it up perfectly and I feel exactly the same way about it. I downloaded the 3 series a few weeks ago, having not seen any of it since the 80s, when I was a kid, and was really taken aback at how much it affected me, watching it again.
As much as I love this iconic ending of Series 2, I would have much preferred it if Robin had used his last arrow to kill the Sheriff instead of just shooting it off into the sky. Then Gisburne could have taken his place as Sheriff of Nottingham and main antagonist of Series 3.
..The problem nowadays is that you will never get shows like this anymore due to political correctness, nowadays Robin Hood has to be how the ''youth'' would enjoy seeing it. I wouldn't be surprised in 5-10 years time we started seeing a Black Robin Hood, Asian Sherlock Holmes and a Black King Arthur on the BBC.
@martinwellborne LoL Very good point. They had them in the village, so what went wrong? I can only surmise that the 'hunt' was so long through the woods, they decided to dispose of them & travel light. Silly really and not a very good excuse I know. When the sheriff said that his body is in Sherwood, I wonder if this means they buried him. If so, why? They can't be worried the body would be carried off and him made into a martyr as with that many crossbow bolts it would be unrecognisable.
I really like this scene apart from two things: 1) Yes, we know the Sheriff is a yellow bellied coward. Is it really necessary for him to be quite so comically spineless? It detracts a bit from the seriousness of Robin's sacrifice.
2) Robin has heroically fallen in battle for his land... only for surfer dude Blonde Robin to pop up in his place! Couldn't they have ended it with this episode? Apart from Gulnar, series 3 sucked.
Very good points here. To address 1) Nick's portrayal as the villainous & always scheming Sheriff was for the most part, inspired. If you want overacting see Alan Rickman's portrayal/rip off. Okay, Nick had a lot of fun with it & at times could be seen as hammy, but this episode in particular I think he was pretty dangerous, not comical.
2) I've reached the same conclusion over the years. Series 2 would've been a perfect time to end. Series 3 can't hold a candle to any of the first two.
@TheTervaskanto ?Jak oglądam 3 serię to naprawdę łezka się kręci... Michael Praed w 2 seriach stworzył niepowtarzalny klimat. ROBIN is the best!!!
thanks for uploading i haven't watched this in way too long! i love this scene you can see the entire of the relationship between robin and the sheriff, he doesn't give the order to shoot until robin has broken the bow and is allowing it. you can see, and they picked up on it in the later series, the fear the sheriff has of the outlaws and how threatened he is by even one of them.
perhaps the finest moment ever, in any telling of Robin Hood. When he breaks his bow, my heart breaks too, every time I see this scene. Michael Praed's performance will live forever, and also Judi Trott as Marian. Absolutely perfect. Thank you for this video.
Es el mejor Robin Hood (of sherwood) de todo los tiempos....y su banda sonora (Clannad) excelente...es un pena gigantesca que en España no conocen la serie..realmente penoso....
This ending is so great, he can kill any one of them and he fires the arrow away. He's totally unnerved the sheriff by not running and he's the one in control!
damn...words can;t describe the wave of emotion i am having watching this right now...even after all these years, this scene's still quite powerful...masterpiece!

damn...words can;t describe the wave of emotion i am having watching this right now...even after all these years, this scene's still quite powerful...masterpiece!
This was the Robin Hood i grew up with. He was such a hunk. He was the first guy i had a crush on and it lasted a real long time. He was just the epitome of everything a man should be.
This is THE Robin Hood, for me the only one. Costner's attempt was a very bad joke, and I had hope for the newest series, only to be let down. Not only was this one pagan, which I like, Marion was more than just the little woman. She was just as strong a warrior as the men and was treated as an equal. A big plus. (Note: Robin #2 was Robert of Huntingdon -- with a 'D'.) Both Michael and Jason were excellent Robins. The DVD collection is one of my most precious possessions.
@LadyNightthorn I was let down by the newest Robin Hood too; not sure why but the Robin depicted didn't act too well for the part and also reminded me of the band Oasis..
@LadyNightthorn Oh my God! ¡I always cry in this scene! ¡When i saw it i felt so sad! ¡My hero had died! I understad how you feel: from me too Michael is the real Robin forever! :')
@LadyNightthorn have you seen the bbc series robin hood? it´s really great, i enjoyed watching.
I have to say, the figthing scenes and some of the effects (for example when someone is hit by an arrow or knife) are better than in a film from 2009 i just watched. respect.
There was only one Robin Hood, and that has to the one and only michael Pread. Sexy, Good Looking, and a legend that only he portraid to perfection. Wish they would do a re-run of this great series. Thanks for posting.
I am sorry but it IS Robin of Loxley, son of Ailric of Loxley called as an adult by Herne the Hunter to be his "son" The tern "wolfshead" refered to all outlaws and simply refered to the fact that is how they were hunted and killed.....like Wolves.
After the death of Robin of Loxley Herne called another........ that was Robert of Huntington, played by Jason "son of sean" connery. Both were refered to as Robin Hood .
Ive got all the dvd box sets, this is robin of loxley son of alric of loxley, who is called by herne the hunter to be his son, when he dies jason conery becamces herne the hunters son, Your memory is not quite as good as you think it is
Anyway, the series defends it self with the great atmosphere and the fantastic music in the background.
In Poland we could follow it at the beginning of the 90'. For our young free television it was really sensational. And it has come with some metaphorical sense - it gave us the confidence that the 89' revolution was right :)
Greats from the little town Myślibórz (myśliwy - means hunter/ bórz - means wood ) in Poland.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Can you actually walk any slower? Let's all go really slow so he can kill us one by one with our arrows! This is just everything that is wrong with stuff created in the 80s/90s. Lack of realism to the point of insanety. Crap dialogue. I remembered this series as smt cool, but now I'm disappointed I bothered looking it up. Crossbow was so much better.
Just seen clip of the Beeb's Robin Hood's final moments , not impressed. Doesnt have the same impact or dignity as death of Robin of Loxley in RoS as portrayed by Michael Praed. Twenty five or so years on, it 's lost nothing of its original impact,, Even now, get taken right back to that Saturday afternoon, full of cold, aged 17 or 16 on phone to my friend, both of us in bits watching it, not quite believing that our hero didnt get away that time, .Beebs version ? instantly forgettable.
I just remember sitting there thinking "hes not going to die, hes surely not going to die, - he'll get out of it" Didnt though - talk about cry but there was time, he couldve run - its like watching the Titanic, you know its going to hit the iceberg, yet you still shout "turn turn", same with this, you know what happens, but most folk that i know still want to shout "run, run, why dont you run " LOL but he doesnt Have to say - , Michael Praed - simply the best Robin Hood - none to beat him
When I was a child, Robin Hood and his squad were my idols. My faivorite mambers of Robin's team were Robin and Nasir. I was watching this movie 15 years ago in Polish language version, and now memories come back. As a child I always wanted to look like Robin and had long hair, but my parents resisted. When I grow up at last I had long hair (over 5 years-now I am bald;) This movie is a part of my youth. I only accept Michael Praed as Robin! Greetings from Poland
the single greatest episode of any television series ever. remember it from 1985 and it stuck with me for years until i got the series on dvd again in 1995. Classic classic show. So many great moments in the episode that arent even in this clip.
The death-scenes of all death-scenes - it amazes me every time I see it.
This series was so much more than just something on TV...
What I always loved about the ending is that we never see the soldiers' arrows kill him, there is no body (as Guisburn points out), and than there's that misterious scene at the lake... I know that they filmed it that way because of the next season, but I liked how it is implied that Robin Hood can't really die.
@fanofbats12345 John, Will and Tuck were captured by Gisburne. Nasir went off with former saracens who then tried to kill him - he was too good! He then returned to Wyckham and discovered John, Will, Tuck and Edward of Wyckham all tied up in a house before finding himself trapped by Gisburne too!
ja tez bylam zrozpaczona i to nie mineło pomimo tylu lat! nadal uwielbiam ten serial i ubolewam nad tym ze sie tak skonczyl ;((((((((((( to byl robin hood!kocham go!
Nie skonczyl sie... Zmienili aktora... I nagrali nastepna serie... 13 odcinkow... Jason Connery gral Robina... Troche to zamotali... Niby Connery gral nastepce po smierci pierwszego Robina ale juz w pierwszym odcinku swojej czesci z Marion za rece chodzili itd... Szybko jej zaloba widocznie przeszla... Reszta aktorow do konca sie nie zmienila...
I cried when I saw this the first time, long ago and it is just as powerful now. Absolutely loved the series, had a HUGE crush on Michael ( but who didn't ?!).
I seem to remember Marion getting shot as well, but in another episode (?)
Does anyone know if this is true and if so, where can I watch it ?
At 1.45 to 1.55 you will see the most sensual and graceful drawing and firing of a longbow by Judi Trott you will ever see, this series was truly the BEST EVER Robin Hood adaptation ever.
I don't know why but if I concentrate on just the vocals, Michael's tone reminds me of the last scene in Lawrence Olivier's Hamlet with the dying Hamlet having his last words with Horatio, though in a modernized sort of way, less theatrical. I wish Michael had done Hamlet, even if just audio, I'm sure his beautiful voice would be well suited. He could still do it. Olivier was about 60 when he did the movie version.
Yeah this were great times, robin hood 4 life! sherwood forest for life! richard for life! story of robin hood is much better than harry potter or something else i think!
=( I cried for days when I saw this when i was little. Poor Robin! This scene still gets to me *cries* Poor Marian too! She knows her husband is about to die and there is nothing she can do about it. I don't know how id feel if I were in her position =(
Oh you're so right! Where do you find the strength to say goodbye to the love of your life, to let them go like that? I feel terrible every time I watch this... Oh Robin....
why oh why after all this time dose this get to me 20 years on and i still look away and say NNOOOOOOOOOOOOO! with tears streaming down my face hoping robin is going to be ok
Michael was gorgeous as Robin Hood and very, very handsome,he was created to this part, and his world on hill, it was one should have courage they would live, dying is easy J understand it todey well.
The greatest tv series ever.. I have the entire thing on DVD..
I dont know why he didnt use his last arrow and hit the sheriff between the eyes.. he obviously could have being as he was hitting men near the sherriff..would have been a fitting end to the tyrany and given Robins death more meaning... But then they wouldnt have been able to carry on would they..haha unless they got a new sheriff of nottingham...
RoS was the best TV series in the 1980's. Kip Carpenter's treatment of the Robin Hood legend was superb & very original. The series represents a 'Gold Standard,' that will never be surpassed. The actors, Ray Winstone, Mark Ryan & Nicholas Grace really were superb in their respective roles. RoS is the greatest version of the Robin Hood legend :)
That wasn't the point. He explained earlier if hed have killed Gisburne, someone worse would replace him.Keep them alive & public keep suporting him.Robin's death was full of meaning.A sacrifice to the land. The Summer King dead. The writer was aware of these themes & notice how Rob is shot exactly with the same no.of bolts as his father, even breaks his bow,the symbol of his power. This had been general practice for 5000+yrs where arows were made dead by breaking their ends,so they cant be used again
I am aware of the significance of why he didn't do it.. It just would have been awesome to see him stick an arrow in the sherriff... I never mention Gisbourne.... He may have even lived if he got the sherriff out of the way.....
btw, if anyone wants to know, the scene of Robin Of Loxley/Michael Praed's last stand is set in ''Draycott Sleights'' in the Mendip Hills, Somerset, England. I've been there and stood at the high point where Loxley was killed and I was overcome with emotion, the scenery is absolutely beautiful there aswell, I recommend that you all try and go :)
Hi, RoS fans! Why do you watch such a sad scene again and again?!! Stop torturing yourselves! Yes, the movie is nice, but what about Praed's acting?!! I think he is a bad actor, he uses just his youth and beauty in RoS. But his face says nothing, no feelings or emotions in the eyes. I saw him in Dynasty as well, very poor action. But the movie "Robin of Sherwood" is OK!!!
You are in large mistake,Michael Praed as Robin Hood was brilliant,Michael broadcast whole sense serial and he created LEGEND ,he in this scene was amazing.MICHAEL is very good actor and he is the BEST ROBIN HOOD IN THE HISTORY!!!
Honey, the movie is nice, no doubt, and I will never forget the first wonderful impression of it but unfortunately Mr.Praed is not a great actor! He was OK for this historic and heroic film of 80s where it was enough to move properly, to say right words, and not to act. Any professional actor will agree with me. I would prefer him to grow in a professional meaning but it never happened. But the movie is great so let him be the best Robin of all!
This pleases you or not Michael is talented actor and for men's majority on whole world this just Michael Praed will stay forever only, true and the best Robin Hood.
I wish he were talented, my dear neighbour, I wish! It would have made him popular not only as Robin Hood. But his career, alas, proves my words. But anyway the movie is nice so let us just enjoy it without arguing! Lol!
You are right,he did not as movie actor career, but this does not mark that it is bad actor, many worse actors are from him .Praed is first of all theatrical actor and adventure from cinema him did not go out,but Michael as Robin Hood was brilliant, the best and J for this part will be him to value to end of life!
No! Any professional actor would NOT agree with you, Rzhevska. Michael is a wonderfully talented actor as he shows here in this superb scene of Robin's death.
He is now a very well respected stage actor. If you had seen him, live, onstage, as I have, you would know that. He commands every inch of the stage when he is on it. Your eyes never leave his performance for a moment, he is mesmerizing. To say he hasn't 'grown in a professional meaning' shows you have no idea what you are on about.
His face says nothing? Are we watching the same series here, the same actor? And if you judge only by this scene, did it occur to you that he's being flat deliberately? If Robin breaks down, so will Marion and Much. He's trying to be cool to send them off, to save them, he's being strong for them. Watch his face when he shoots his last arrow to the blood red sky, there all his sorrow, all his pain and Michael's acting talent is bare to see.
What pained me the most about Robin/Michael Praed's death is just how quickly afterwards Marion seemed to fall for Robert Of Huntingdon/Jason Connery. To this day it still irks me, her true love was Michael Praed and it should have remained that way, Huntingdon should have just remained a friendly companion hnouring the spirit of Loxley.
I hate watching this scene, but I love Michael's acting. There is nothing better than watching a handsome man say some of the best 'I love you' lines in the history of Robin Hood fandom.
Thank you, my memory was hazy. I had forgotten this series until this weekend, thank goodness I have a special DVD player and can watch the series from the UK, the price for the series here in the States on ebay is highway robbery!
Sometimes this clip really has trouble running, why is this so? It is such a very powerful, yet extremely sad, ending to the 'reign' of Robin of Loxley, and Michael Praed puts a whole range of emotions into the part - he's just terriffic. I've watched, and tried to watch it, a number of times; never growing tired of viewing such an excellent piece of acting/writing genius. =o)

If so, why? They can't be worried the body would be carried off and him made into a martyr as with that many crossbow bolts it would be unrecognisable.
sonofherne 1 year ago
I really like this scene apart from two things: 1) Yes, we know the Sheriff is a yellow bellied coward. Is it really necessary for him to be quite so comically spineless? It detracts a bit from the seriousness of Robin's sacrifice.
2) Robin has heroically fallen in battle for his land... only for surfer dude Blonde Robin to pop up in his place! Couldn't they have ended it with this episode? Apart from Gulnar, series 3 sucked.
BonVoyeur1 1 year ago
Very good points here. To address 1) Nick's portrayal as the villainous & always scheming Sheriff was for the most part, inspired. If you want overacting see Alan Rickman's portrayal/rip off. Okay, Nick had a lot of fun with it & at times could be seen as hammy, but this episode in particular I think he was pretty dangerous, not comical.
2) I've reached the same conclusion over the years. Series 2 would've been a perfect time to end. Series 3 can't hold a candle to any of the first two.

@BonVoyeur1 ,you are so right Connery really sucked, the rest of R of S was not worth watching post Praed.

@TheTervaskanto ?Jak oglądam 3 serię to naprawdę łezka się kręci... Michael Praed w 2 seriach stworzył niepowtarzalny klimat. ROBIN is the best!!!

thanks for uploading i haven't watched this in way too long! i love this scene you can see the entire of the relationship between robin and the sheriff, he doesn't give the order to shoot until robin has broken the bow and is allowing it. you can see, and they picked up on it in the later series, the fear the sheriff has of the outlaws and how threatened he is by even one of them.
dell141 1 year ago
perhaps the finest moment ever, in any telling of Robin Hood. When he breaks his bow, my heart breaks too, every time I see this scene. Michael Praed's performance will live forever, and also Judi Trott as Marian. Absolutely perfect. Thank you for this video.

First time series with Praed was shown on Polish TV in 1985-86 (Sunday, ~14:00, TVP2 ), and a series with Connery in 1987.
In 1990 the series was repeated in the TVP1 during the winter break.

I have just watched the death of Robin Hoodie on the BBC's 'Robin Hood' series.
And it lacks the impact and emotional resonance of Robin of Loxley's death in RoS. Michael Praed is superb as Robin, whereas Jonas Armstrong is not.
No one will ever equal the beauty and the tragedy of the death of Robin as portrayed by Michael Praed in 'The Greatest Enemy.'
It still makes me weep buckets even after all this time.

LIVERPOOLSCOTTISH 3 years ago 8
That wasn't the point. He explained earlier if hed have killed Gisburne, someone worse would replace him.Keep them alive & public keep suporting him.Robin's death was full of meaning.A sacrifice to the land. The Summer King dead. The writer was aware of these themes & notice how Rob is shot exactly with the same no.of bolts as his father, even breaks his bow,the symbol of his power. This had been general practice for 5000+yrs where arows were made dead by breaking their ends,so they cant be used again

I've been there and stood at the high point where Loxley was killed and I was overcome with emotion, the scenery is absolutely beautiful there aswell, I recommend that you all try and go :)
Dungarth 3 years ago 2
Hi, RoS fans! Why do you watch such a sad scene again and again?!! Stop torturing yourselves! Yes, the movie is nice, but what about Praed's acting?!! I think he is a bad actor, he uses just his youth and beauty in RoS. But his face says nothing, no feelings or emotions in the eyes. I saw him in Dynasty as well, very poor action. But the movie "Robin of Sherwood" is OK!!!
rzhevska 3 years ago
You are in large mistake,Michael Praed as Robin Hood was brilliant,Michael broadcast whole sense serial and he created LEGEND ,he in this scene was amazing.MICHAEL is very good actor and he is the BEST ROBIN HOOD IN THE HISTORY!!!
piwoniaa 3 years ago 2
Honey, the movie is nice, no doubt, and I will never forget the first wonderful impression of it but unfortunately Mr.Praed is not a great actor! He was OK for this historic and heroic film of 80s where it was enough to move properly, to say right words, and not to act. Any professional actor will agree with me. I would prefer him to grow in a professional meaning but it never happened. But the movie is great so let him be the best Robin of all!
rzhevska 3 years ago
This pleases you or not Michael is talented actor and for men's majority on whole world this just Michael Praed will stay forever only, true and the best Robin Hood.
piwoniaa 3 years ago
I wish he were talented, my dear neighbour, I wish! It would have made him popular not only as Robin Hood. But his career, alas, proves my words. But anyway the movie is nice so let us just enjoy it without arguing! Lol!
rzhevska 3 years ago
You are right,he did not as movie actor career, but this does not mark that it is bad actor, many worse actors are from him .Praed is first of all theatrical actor and adventure from cinema him did not go out,but Michael as Robin Hood was brilliant, the best and J for this part will be him to value to end of life!
piwoniaa 3 years ago
To say he hasn't 'grown in a professional meaning' shows you have no idea what you are on about.
witchytwo 3 years ago 2
His face says nothing? Are we watching the same series here, the same actor? And if you judge only by this scene, did it occur to you that he's being flat deliberately? If Robin breaks down, so will Marion and Much. He's trying to be cool to send them off, to save them, he's being strong for them. Watch his face when he shoots his last arrow to the blood red sky, there all his sorrow, all his pain and Michael's acting talent is bare to see.
arwynt 3 years ago
What pained me the most about Robin/Michael Praed's death is just how quickly afterwards Marion seemed to fall for Robert Of Huntingdon/Jason Connery. To this day it still irks me, her true love was Michael Praed and it should have remained that way, Huntingdon should have just remained a friendly companion hnouring the spirit of Loxley.
Dungarth 3 years ago 2
