There isn't much to say. I'm on an Elton kick now. Last night I watched the documentary called The Union about Elton and Leon Russel and the making of the album. I woke up with Elton songs in my head this morning.
Absolutely love Pinky...but of course, I love most of Elton's music..it's so original, raw, pure..it's everyrhing rolled into one..if you think about it, if you read his lyrics there were songs that were graphic for that point in time...but I loved it..nothing short of being pure music genius..BTW..I still have many of his albums when they did the vinyl records..and I intend to keep every one til I die.
Well, it was an ex girlfriend who introduced me to this song, and the album from which it comes. It's another of them songs that you just love to play. Christina, you were so special, but you broke my heart, but I still love you babe.
As an Elton John fan I have to say that this song always reminds me of an episode I saw, long years ago of "The Roaring Twenties" with Cesare Danova - playing the part of a not very good gambler ("Poor gamblers hands" )and Dorothy Provine,( as" Pinky" Pinkham) late one Saturday Night after a "few too many " and couldn't help thinking-"HHHMMMMM !"
So great to see all these positive reactions to Pinky - I thought it was just me! It is just pure magic, such a wonderful song, especially for the arrangement let alone tune and sumptuous lyrics.
Beautiful song. I think there's a generation growing up that may not be aware that Elton John is more than a celebrity - he's a musical genius. And the same can be said for Bernie and his lyrics.
Yup yet another Elton John song that reminds me of my High School boyfriend... Playing frisbee at the beach. Didn't get any better back then...Such a happy time.... Great song....:)
I've loved, loved, loved this track since it came out in '74 when I was 15. Thank you for posting it and letting the world know that there's so much more to Elton beyond the hit singles!
One of my favorite Elton John songs. My father is a great fan, and has made me a huge fan as well :) I have even seen him live and I'm a 17 year old girl! I don't know anyone else my age that likes his music :p Only can you feel the love tonight and all those, they don't know the REAL Elton John, which is for example this song <3
Of the many "undiscovered treasures" that can be found among the Elton/Bernie catalog, this was one of the ones I played the most of them all. And let's not forget to give props to the great Dave Hentschel, who played Mellotron on this and contributed solid synth work to many other Elton classic tracks.
Fantastic tune. There are SO many lesser known great songs by this pair - have always liked this one - High Flying Bird, Curtains and Ticking just a few of MANY others
Elton says he would lay down the basic track and Dee, Nigel and Davey would do the background singing. He said that he had no idea what they would do. It just goes to show what a wonder Elton has been for so many years; he was not then and is not now jealous to let his cohorts throw in their creative parts as well. This man, this writing team, this band adds joy to my life. Thank you. In passing, you may remember that 'old pink eyes is back" was the original title. Frank was pissed, so no.
ONE OF ELTON`S BEST! use to listen to this all the time with a friend i just `found` again. Harmony is another one you don`t hear very often either that is really good.
Too bad this song got buried on the album, because it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written. "Radio" fans never heard it, but true Elton fans have cherished it for years.
yes ...pure genius...the harmony and cadence seem celestial..actually there are no words
I had a "moment" on this years ago...I just cant describe, but now I "know" because it ties into the satori moments, it doesnt take much to trigger it you are close, anything can do it
'Oh It's ten below zero and we're about to abandon our plans for the day'
The song and this lyric has stayed with me since first hearing the song way back in the 70s. Simple but pure and framed in a beautiful melody. I'll be a teenager forever because of this song.
This is his most beautiful composition. Obscure, maybe. Heart felt and touching, most definitely! Love this song! Brings back some of the best memories of my life.
One of the albums that I wore out during my high school days, I learned that many of the songs that were the most outstanding were NOT the "designated hits", but the "sidebar tunes" that nobody considered, like this one. With the simple turn of a few chords and masterfully placed words, Elton and Bernie brought me to tears back then, when it was a more innocent time. Hearing it again, I find nothing has changed.
such a sweet song I was a senior in high school when it came out and I realized no more girls and it was gay gay gay pinky was not the hot lil chick i wanted or thought i wanted. pinky was sumpn else that only us gay menz get....
One of the most subtle and outstanding songs these two have ever written. So clever and moving, wildly sentimantal, gushing and gloriously so . Only a heart of stone could fail to be moved by this. It is so held back and understated vocally but so perfectly realised and excecuted and shows Elton's supernatural musical maturity and taste in such a fickle genre as popular music. I agree with whoever rated these two as better than lennon and macca...and thats no dis- respect to them.
Elton has hunderds of album tracks that the wider public have never heard and probably never will, they are missing out on real treasures...... heartfelt words and music, just like this track. it is for this reason that i believe that Elton and Bernie are our greatest songwriters, better than even Lennon and McCartney.
@keefy7156 I hear ya, I hear ya -- Elton and Bernie's best tunes were never 'hits' because the record companies only put out what *they* liked! Jeez, I could start naming them, but it would take a couple of days...
@keefy7156 I totally agree with what you said except the Lennon & McCarney bit & I think even bernie would disagree with you their but i do think bernie wrote some great stuff theres no doubt about that.
@keefy7156 they need to go to all the back alley used record stores for stuff...also some years ago I picked up several elton john records 45 rpm's for one dollar, including the FRIENDS one, 45 rpm...
Another underrated and underappreciated GEM by a monster talent. Folks who only know the post-Lion King EJ can't appreciate how amazing he was for a decade of years. Caribou is widely considered not one of his best efforts, but I have to say it offers a bunch of superior pieces.
@gsrdtg Well, he's still got what it takes, with The Union album. I agree it's a shame about his voice problems and throat op in the 80s, but considering that and passing time, he's done well..
as a man , not ashamed to say this carried me in rough times. Structurally and in every sense musically, this song is perfect, though not for other others.
