@Joedisneyman Voodoo is just a camera tracker. It analyzes a set of photos and creates a set of points, but it looks like VideoTrace is different b/c it lets you select a portion of the scene to model (and also provides some handy tools to edit the video in 3d).

Tres cool. Beauty of this system is that you get th' texture from th' video footage as well an' there's no need for a UV mapping stage. Admittedly it's going to need touching up, but for quickly getting content into a 3D system this is absolutely amazing ..

You need to record a video, read the description.  And VideoTrace is the biggest clue ever, a raging clue if you will.

Well from this line "3D information obtained from computer vision techniques" implies to me that some kind of pre process was used before hand. I assumed that was some form of traditional camera tracking.

You need a camera to be able to view the 3d, it doesn't just appear by magic does it Chris.

Judging from your smarmy comment then if it's all done from the video it calculates the camera position from some kind of optical flow system?

It looks like you take standard 2D video footage and begin by drawing on an initial frame. I imagine some motion tracking is used to recalculate the new position of visible vertexes as you progress through the frames. How they determine the normal of each polygon and the position of the camera is a little bit beyond me... I'll put that down to clever maths, or magic.

yes they do- to make anything that isn't made with a poly count so low you can count them on your fingers

also the only reason that model looked acceptable was because of the hi res texture on the low res model- without having access to a decent texture the model would look dreadful

actually it already looks dreadful, there's no back end for a start

no doubt it's a useful tool for 'cloning' things in a video- but for unique content generation it's not ideal (but that's not what it's for)

There is one that makes and generates faces in 3D from images. Also I think Microsoft? is developing something to make 3D models of buildings/landmarks generated from various photos. It even shows you in 3D where the picture was taken from.

Sadly the only thing I have which is already available in most 3D applications is the ability to camera map textures which can help you create rough 3D models from photos, but it's a much more time consuming process.
