Really don't get these discussions about Bobby and DT. Has someone of these DT believers ever realized that Portnoy also was in some ways born for the 'show', while Bobby is absolutely not into this? Bobby would never have fitted into DT from his personal look at music. The personal types of Portnoy and Mangini are closer together than Jarzombek to Portnoy/Mangini. It's so easy.

@Dieterbe I axed that quechion myself, following this man's Career in Spastic Ink and Riot, I'd say he's the man for the Job. Bobby and Mike started in music pretty much the same time, but Bobby Jarzombek is definitely the most underrated drummer. An ambidexterious complex madman! Not slow, not fast, but fulfilled. There isn't a drumming gap on this DVD/VHS (I have the VHS :) )

@Z4nk0 Yeah he´s good at what he does and sure has created a footprint in the drumming community.. with his unique style. But technically, he stands no chance to for instance Mike Mangini (Professor at Berklee.. ) Aint nothing Portnoy does that Mangini cant do - with his LEFT hand if you want. (He can do everything independent of leading with his left or right fot/arm, not many can do that)

This guy is amazing, measured against a yardstick of pure technical skill. Still, it's about more than how many notes you can play. This guy would have been a horrible fit for a band like The Beatles, but he's great for Spastic Ink. By the same token, I think he's a little too much for DT, but maybe he can tone it down a bit. It would be interesting to see, for sure!

@duster0815 Yes, he can. You should go and see him live. They are both incredible drummers, but I think Portnoy is a little bit overrated compared to Bobby. If Bobby was in DT for the last 25 years he would have been given all the awards and honours.

Hey says in his video that he is a right handed drummer, but decided to play open because it had a more free feel and he can do all these things. Which is pretty amazing. Either way, I am a lefty and I play open I like this, but again imagining doing that with my right would be down right impossible.

@Megawatt Yea, riding with his left hand is a dead giveaway, but he also starts his double bass on his left foot, and many of his fills start on the left hand. Not too uncommon that he's playing a righty setup, that's how I and most people learned.

@godlydrmr He's actually not a lefty. I have this instrucitonal DVD and he says he used to play traditionally, then switched open-handed awhile ago (post '88 maybe). He leads w/ his right foot for double bass for most patterns as well.
