1. don't really know how to answer that one but i reckon its because he was so young and vulnerable, they wanted to portray what life was like back in those days?

2. he said he slipped because he didn't want to say he got shot and show to Noodles that he was a weak person, even though he was dying.

every scene in this film is shot like its the main master scene thats one of the many great things about it, each scene is filmed perfectly theres no fillers every scene is important and filmed to leave a lasting impression on the viewer

@robzip7 the version available on DVD is the same, but when it first came out in theaters in the US it was edited down to roughly an hour and a half.
