I love this song! this was back in the day when you had to get through your lovers PARENTS first. Now its all about social networking and mobile phones. I kind of long for old fashioned romance.
I never cared for the song, wanted to post to my BSF wall. happened to come up when talking about what was playing over there air waves while we were very young.
I don't understand why this video has been taken down, not because I didn't care for it. Has any one hear the quality of the audio??? NOT GOOD!! Good song, even though; "and the operator says forty cents more, for the next three minutes" is outdated and today Sylvia would have a cellphone and Mrs. Avery could be an internet troll
I saw these guys when they came to the UK on their 'Bankrupt' tour, and they were amazing! They came onstage, hid behind a sheet that was hanging up at the back, and changed into...BAY CITY ROLLER COSTUMES! For the next 90 minutes they turned the theatre into a big party for 500 people and left us all shouting for more. FANTASTIC!

I often wonder if this song is about the "Sylvia Avery" that lived on Martindale Rd. in Scarborough Ontario. She had a sister named Joyce - a childhood friend until I moved at age 8. Always loved this song and I have always wondered about the connection with the name since I grew up there when all this music first came out ... "?" ... So many musical memories ...
This song brings back so many memories .... saw Dr. Hook in Denver at Ebbetts Field in the early 70's....back then this was MY song...still is I guess....Pure soul....Thanks so much for posting.
Saw Dr Hook at Salford Uni in the late seventies....By their standards it was just another small venue, but they gave it everything, Their stage presence and sense of fun was great, it was a privilege to be there.
As a touring artist that had a few number 1' s in country music, I had the pleasure of being booked into a Texas venue with the Hook. This was way after they re last number 1. Mine was in the top 10 at the time. I got the big payoff they got the lesser. They were the opeing act. Opening for me? Bullshit. Called my agent, things changed. They opened for me. They got the money. Way it should have been all along.

I married her and she turned out to be a total bitch. ran off with my best mate. the song should be renamed "if your gf's mother is a bitch, you might have a bitch of a gf..".. ( all opinions expressed here are solely the etc etc )
What a conveyance of emotion in the singer's voice. It is brilliant. Like many people will say, we don't get musicians like this anymore. People who pour their hearts into a song rather than thinking how much money they are going to make on downloads or what demographic will buy it.
I may only be 18 - but you don't get music like this anymore. Give me some Dr. Hook, give me Elvis, give me The Kinks, over any of this new day crap! Real music, real lyrics, real emotion. Love it!

@geebee123 That's because AT&T, a.k.a., Ma Bell, was a monopoly and could charge what it damn well pleased. I'm old enough to remember my parents yelling at us for making too many phone calls. Long distance calls were unaffordable and really cost 40 cents for a 3-minute call.
@crayons23able you were never a "young girl" you rotton old whore you lost your virginity at 13 and proceeded to blow 1000 different men before your 18th birthday.
Dr. Hook used to be my favorite music to get high too, lol. Now I listen to it not high and wonder what made it so interesting when I was high..hmmph guess I'll never know.
this was a very very special song between my late husband and i, back in the 80's,i miss him very much, the up side of this,we have a son,and now i have 2 lovely grandson sons, magic,!!! now life is worth living again, isnt life wonderful
Awwwww I saw Dr. Hook in Liverpool and I can't tell you how incredible they were - hurts a bit hearing it again now I'm too old to rock 'n roll, too young to die!!!! (Tull was WRONG)
OMG! could this band deliver, i never heard such a sound since, they seem to be singing right from their heart, i wonder if they ever had singing lessons or if they all were just born just sing so fantastic.
I just heard this again on the oldies station. I really like the emotion the singer expressed in the song. It is great. I also like the simulated train sound they get from the music. These guys are very talented to say the least!
Sylvia's mother wants to get Sylvia the fuck out of the house so the mother can go back to watching online porn and not be disturbed. She also tells the caller: 'And sir won't you call back again." She's going to move on Sylvia's ex as soon as Sylvia is gone! What a bitch.
@chrispmis You are obviously too young or fucked up to understand the song so why not let other people listen without your crass comments....dickhead.x
@steviedavey1 Blow me stevie boy. You're the typical online asshole who's a real tough guy from 1000 miles away. You didn't have to read the comments; you chose to. If you don't like my humor then ignore it. But no, you're a weak-minded fool who allows himself to be annoyed by others. How pitiful. Fuck off and grow up you online pussy. You're not worth any more of my time.
No offence, sir, but I think that you have misinterpreted the lyrics of this fine song by Dr Hook, somewhat. For one thing, "Sylvia's Mother" was recorded and released in '72 - almost 40 years ago - in an era when online porn did not exist.
And, as for your suggestion that the good lady wants to get it on with the young man that she clearly considers "not good enough" for her daughter, I have to say that I think that that scenario is somewhat unlikely!
I don't know about that, 'Christpmis'! I have to say that, when the mood takes me, I can be pretty crude and ill-mannered.
As regards the song "Sylvia's Mother", I must admit that i have always been slightly puzzled by the line: "And sir won't you call back again". It is just possible that you may be right when you say that the good lady [Mrs Avery] is "going to move on to Sylvia's ex as soon as Sylvia is gone".
I guess that the guy who wrote the song could enlighten us!
To be honest! Like all his songs, this one, he is struggled to keepi up with the tune

Many people wonder how they got their name.
The lead singer was a Veterinarian that discovered a vaccine for hook-worms.
They started calling him Dr. Hook and the name stuck.

in my misspent youth I worked summers at Pontins in Brean Sands when this song was at No1 in the charts and on the radio incessantly.
We used to stand in a long line for our lunch in the staff canteen and one of the lads used to shout from the back "What did Sylvias Mother say"?
The whole line of Bluecoats and workers used to chant back in unison
"B*llocks"

@chrispmis

@TheEctomorph All I can say is that you're far too well mannered to be conversing with internet low-lifes like myself. ;o)

@chrispmis
