Its hilarious. For all the angry minority people that cant stand when white people do anything that puts a smile on their face, just consider all that black humor on BET and all them white cheerleaders. Now Ill go back to laughing while you find another excuse to spoil our good times. Laugh Without Guilt, people.
Nonsense. This is typical of its era and you cannot change that. It IS part of history and in a musical sense an important one. I think most of us would feel uncomfortable with this kind of performance now but this was filmed then, and glad I am that it was.
You should also note that there is a made up Irish tenor between them.
It was the style of the day, and even black performers wore blackface makeup.
MY point is: this is the only footage of Emmett Miller in existence, though he was famous for his band and "clarinet voice". We hear a little of that voice in the cat's howl.
Stereotypes aint gonna hold you back if you wanna succeed . Irish, Poles, Jews, Indians, etc.. They all had to put up with alot of stereotyping . Guess what? They succeed all the same. You can never eliminate stereotypes from people unless you regulate everything they say till it turns out something that has nt any opinions and preferences.
Miller performed country music with one of the greatest Jazz bands of the era, adopting a mongrel Blues-Hillbilly style originated by poor blacks, parodying the 18th and 19th century white elite, which in popular adaptation was turned to parody Black people.
Emmett Miller represents a fleeting intersection of all of these truly American influences that has never and will never be seen again. Black, White, Jazz, Country, Blues, Rich, Poor, Good, Evil, Right, Wrong, America, Emmett Miller.
Don't all this "witch hunting"get you guys exhausted on yourselves? Give it a rest. Stereotyping has always been a good ground for comedians and always will be.... because when done right its hilarious. Flower children relax
It is an Art Form . Look at the work that has been put into it .
I love to see this stuff . I have loads of this stuff in my house on vhs and dvds . In my house if a white guy is not in black face on my TV I turn it over .
True, but I know ALL stereotypes have a negative effect. But some stereotypes are more harmless than others and this coon stereotype really fucked up perception of Blacks that survive even up to today!
I don't think you can blame this historic style for the perception frightened morons may have today. They grew those independently. I think a little xenophobia is part of the human condition, and one must have intelligence to find where it's limits should be. I'm just glad we have footage like this to see where we were. This is a "milepost" from over 50 years ago.
Of course. The audience back then passed the perception on to their children that Blacks are slower and not as smart as Whites, have very low standards, have their own Ebonics and manner of pronouncing the English language that seems very dumb, et al.
It started SOMEHWERE and didn't just appear by itself today.

This is not a stereotype even - no black have spoke anything like this since about 1905.
It's more a funny period piece.

Blacks did not act that way. This is not a parody but a stereotype

Obviously. The Irish tenor between them is a stereotype too. That's just the way it was, and most ethnic types got "a turn in the barrel".
