Well...I thought you'd be just another dork blowing smoke. However, I can see you have swung a staff quite a bit. Nice to show how one system applies to the other. One thing about kata that may help people is to think of kata as programming. Kata is used with the imagination to train your muscle memory to react and move in a certain way even though there are no live training partners or opponents. It's much more then rank advancement. Cool Sjambok.
I bought one, and I appreciated all the stuff I can get.
holy crap you are/were 150 plus pounds of fat, you weren't very fat at all in this video. though you were noticeably out of shape, breathing hard over that little movement is a bad sign.
whatever though, I bought one before this vid and after seeing your vid I am glad I did, seeing as I am also a fat fuck who breaths hard and would rather not spend more energy kicking ass than I have to.
impressive! iv been gathering data on the sjambok to decide weather or not i buy one, and i have to say this video convinced me to get one. thank you my friend ^_^
lol he says its very expensive on the cold steel website its $14.99 and the sjambok isnt a staff its a whip but other than that it was pretty legit and sick
Hello Shawn nice demonstration. The Sjambok is a really effective weapon that is still used by our police here in South Africa, largely for crowd control and intimidation - I've been on the receiving end of one as a kid - bloody sore I can tell you. It's pronounced Sham/bok here.
awesome i didnt realize you could do cool stuff with a sjambok. and if your questioning its power just watch "cold steel`s" demo video of 1, they are a lot more powerful than they look. and saxdude, good luck with your muay thai, i havent actually done muay thai before but it seems pretty awesome.
Thank you very much. I still haven't started muay thai yet. I'm trying to get myself physically fit before training. I've been working with a personal trainer/nutritionist and have so far lost 120lbs in about a year. I'm still working to loose another 50lbs in fat and gain a bit of weight in muscle.
This comment is from someone who's opinion means absolutely nothing. If you don't like what you see then waste time looking at something else. I could care less what you have to say.
Cool video but why did u say this thing is expensive . Its like 18 bucks online and secondarily i have always wondere ho effective this thing is could this really hurt . I mean its "wiggly"
As for the price it was a bit more expensive when i bought it back in 2000 and even still I did this video without script or guidlines so i "winged it". As for the damage the flexible poly material used correctly can create a "whipping" snap-like effect of which can penetrate skin and cause interal damage.
comming from someone so repulsive they cannot post a video or picture. You are nothing, a speck a fucking ripple in the ocean. , your opinion means nothing You mean nothing Go waste time with someone else who cares what you have to say.
Man, you're very very good with that strange stick.. but seems you did some special martial art to handle the stick in that way.. what's your style? karate, kung fu, wing chun? Finally: the "sjambok" is really a hard defense weapon or only a collector toy? what's material it's made of? thank you, great clip
thanks. Its MMA Kung Fu. And a mixture of previous arts studied such as Tai Kwan do, Kechu-do and kempo. This is simply the beginners moves mixed with some free style. And the Sjambok is not a defense weapon. Its for offense ONLY. its made out of a poly material. Virtually indestructable. Its no toy.
Traditional purpose of Sjambok to punish/drive slaves, also used to drive cattle, + by South Africal police for crowd control under apartheid. Not a "weapon" per se. DESIGNED not to break bones, seriously injure, etc.
I do know the origin of the Sjambok, i studied it before i trained with it. However, it makes no difference what it was designed for. Nearly anything can be used as a weapon. This happens to be a very effective one when it comes to offense. That is all I trained to use it for after all.
Nor would I. During training your bound to be hit by one. Hurts like hell, even half-speed. Gah I got off balance and will never do so again. I had this huge mark for about 3 weeks in my leg. a dam indent. This being the main reason why i don't train with live blades.
Yo, look up the Louis Theroux "law and disorder in Johanasburg" episode if you wanna get an idea of the use they put Sjamboks to over there these days.
The main effect of this weapon in a defence situation seem to causing pain. But there's the case that often attackers are drunk, drugged and have high adrenaline levels - factors that can make a person more insensitive of pain.
A man-stopping weapon in such a defence situation would be probably a weapon that break bones instead of just ripping skin. A opponent with wounded skin can continue attacking. It's rather possible that the opponent will not even notice the wounds during the fight .
This is not a defensive weapon it is an offensive one. It in fact is extremely weak for defense because of its flexibility. And yes when intoxicated or impaired pain levels can be lessened. But you are missing the fact that the other side of this weapon is a solid inflexible object. Its blunt, hard as steel and thick. The back end of the sjambok can be used to break bones and cause serious injury.. Simply hitting the opponent hard enough to render them unconcious. or dead for that matter.
@MyElectricEyes: The answer of a person that seem to need skills in using this weapon correctly? ;)
You know a tessen, a Japanese fighting fan? It looks harmless, but in the hand of a skilled fighter it's a very effective weapon. So effective that even Samurais used them where a sword wasn't allowed.
Also any whip-like weapon like the Sjambok needs training. Then it will be very effective even against multiple attackers.
Just a little hint: You can't parry a quick, hard whip strike ...
I agree completely, and yes I've studied the tessen. I looked deep into the history and practices of samurai. They developed legendary blade techniques that are still used to this day. I've only trained with the sjambok for 4 years now. Still have much to study and learn. With my current weight loss the techniques are much easier to perform and practice.
Thank you very much for the compliment. I'm intending to make a new video though. Since that video i've lost 120lbs. I'm much lighter, faster, and stronger than ever before. I'm trying to develope some new techniques, through sensei of course.
IMHO the Sjambok is one of the most interesting martial arts weapons. But I'm a beginner and I'm unsure what training is the best for using the Sjambok in the most effective way. I'm not asking because I'm interested in hurting anyone. My intention is to mastering the Sjambok.
Are there specific Martial Arts 'Whip Forms' you learned or do you train with a Sjambok like you train with a stick? Your Sjambok usage looks quiet elegant.
Thanks for the comment! As for specific martial arts styles I can suggest practicing with a short staff at first or screamer sticks, the wrist rotations are identical the only difference is of course the elasticity of the sjambok. So power control is key. Many of my forms kung from mixed martial arts styles as well as basic kung fu. There isn't a specific style i could recommend to you. Practice sparring with sticks and you'll learn first hand on what works and what doesn't
well both have advantages and disadvantages. it would be hard to choose considering the sjambok can only be used for offensive attacks, few defensive such as hand-to-hand the flexibility of the weapon could be used to wrap around the opponents arm and joint locks. but the staff would hit harder, it would cause more external damages, broken bones and joints. while the sjambok could directly damage internal organs used properly.
Thanks for your opinion, Shawn. I would prefer the stick.
You can have a cane anywhere in the world and walk around with it. You'll get no legal problems when carrying this possible weapon in public - while it's nearly impossible to carry even the medium Sjambok always with you discreetly.
Ok, you can put it in one of those big trekking backpacks but that's not the typical outfit for strolling through town at night...
haha well you would have to generally have a medical excuse to carry around a cane but i get your opinion. I wouldn't EVER use a sjambok on another human being. A cane or walking staff would cause less damage, its more easily controlled than a sjambok. Easier to maneuver and easier to control in speed. So for a general street fight if you absolutely have to use a weapon as cowardous as that is then a cane or walking stick would be best.
The few times I read about the Sjambok in forums there was mostly the statement that a Sjambok causes pain and damages the skin but can't hurt a human seriously while a cane or stick can broke a person's bones or could even kill it. So the recommendation for a good self defence weapon was the Sjambok -because - it hurts but doesn't serious damage!
If this is true a Sjambok would get less effective when the attacker wears thick clothes or is analgetic (drugs)?
Are we talking about a wooden sjambok? lol From experience the wooden sjambok causes much less and is great for beginners and/or sparring. But not the poly- material sjambok. I'm confused as well. I've seen the effects of the poly one in comparison to the wooden. The poly is much more effective and used correctly can cause serious harm. Don't know what the hell they're smoking >.>
When have i ever said anything about breaking bones? Yes obviously a solid infelxible object is more like to break a bone than a flexible poly material this i know. What is up with people recently, they ask obvious questions and make obvious statements. The sjambok is capable of causing internal damage and yes breaking skin. And of course that hurts like hell. Used to wrap around oppenents arms it can assist in breaking bones but not the impact of the weapon alone.
If you can't take it then don't watch, lol your nothing at all to me, a fucking claud of dirt on the ground. Your opinion means nothing. Simply look at different videos and talk to someone who cares about what you have to say. hahahaha
the material is one of the most durable of its kind. It will penetrate flesh, it will cause internal damages used correctly. I would NEVER advise using it on another human being. I would consider that very cruel and unusual despite the circumstances. and i would especially advise extreme caution. It is NOT a toy in any way or form. Do NOT treat it like one or you WILL be sorry. Trust me, i've nailed myself with it once. had a blood mark an inch deep for 3 weeks.
cool, don't worry man i'm not angry at anyone on here. It really takes a lot to get me angry. How do you like the tool? What kind of tests have you done with it?
lol i know what you mean, you'd think it'd be alot lighter. But it takes alot of practice and dedication to wield safely and effectively. good luck and BE CAREFUL haha. I enjoy it, but not the marks its left.
oh your looking for more of a screamer stick. Those are best made from wood but if you prefer cold steel's poly material i'm sure you could custom order such a weapon through them, I doubt it would be expensive at all. just specify the type of design or if you want to make it simpler you could just cut that one down as you suggested. it may be a bit rough to do so though.
I'm not trying to be mean here, but in my opinion, it seems to me you are full of yourself and I think that's why your sensei doesn't teach you anymore, martial arts are not for "dangerous" people.
lol your not being mean your being arrogant. You have no idea what happened. The reason he stopped training me is not because of anything i did. He became jealous over my health and fitness trainer. Accused him of teaching me martial arts and left. I haven't heard from him since. You know nothing of me and who are you to judge my personality or my life? If anyone's full of themselves its you. Take a look in the mirror.
lol yeah it does. but out of the entire video thats all you noticed? That video was done on a whim, no one really helped me with it nor did i plan on how i was going to word anything. haha. Very poorly prepared video. but at least now i'm over 100lbs lighter and much faster.
lol thanks.. i think. I learned them through years of training, experience, and dedication. I emagine that would be the best way to learn them. If you want a referance then Sensei Master Kiel is the one who taught me. Steven Kiel is regular name. I no longer train with him though.. some things have occured and well... its a long story anyways. thanks for the comment. If you have any further questions feel free to ask on here.
haha, i look back on this video, how the hell did i ever let myself get so absolutely HUGE. haha. its rediculous. Well one things for sure, i'm never going back thats for fucking sure. haha
i'm not 100% sure on the legality of carrying around the short-staff sjambok but i do believe its considered a weapon unless there's a medical excuse, a lagit one and its the standard 40' cane size
yes i was pretty big back then, and i still have this video as a reminder of what i will NEVER go back to. I've lost 80lbs in sheer fat since this video, i'm faster, stronger, more athletic and energized than ever before. but i'd rather be a hero from what i've accomplished health wise than anything. did you mean that post as an insult or a compliment?
why do you deserve my knowledge? my training program is beyond unique and works FAR faster than any other you've heard of or seen. twice the gains of traditional weight lifting in half the time. not to mention a general lean protein low carb diet.
lol because the world is full of idiots that lack the will power and determination to withstand the workouts, this program is by far the hardest training program anywhere. it takes on the most amount of stress in the shortest amount of time possible. most students give up within the first week. so if you want to know then you have to pay, either its your heart to the training or your damn wallet without either its a waste of time.
The sjambok is a pretty interesting tool. I understand that it can inflict a terrific amount of pain. I saw some sites offering "authentic" ones made from hippopotamus hide, wild stuff. The South African police use Sjamboks made from plastic, and apparently those work also. Of course the item has strong connotations due to historically being used for beating slaves, but I guess that shouldn't take away from its utility.
yes it can and it does. the amount of possible torque you can obtain can cause HUGE damage. I was just reading through some old comments. What the police use is more so a type of screamer stick if your talking about the simple-stick without the added handle.
I'm amazed no one made fun of you for this. I have a friend who is a black belt in Hapkido I think its called he did a demo for the talent show and no one has let him live it down seance then. he messed up a lot because he was nevus but I have seen him in smaller demos he is pretty good
and why would i be made fun of? I made a few errors in what i said, thats all. My technique was well done and the moves were executed in a proper fashion. Hapkido is a showcase style, its not based on traditional styles or practical styles its based on tournament fighting. any fighter i've seen from that style is taught to do one thing and one thing only, show off. when it comes to a street fight, they'll be on the ground in seconds and wonder why their martial arts training didn't work
Ahhh that's why your were not made fun off. your a ass your self. well that really shows you study martial arts. anyways i didn't mean to a fend you about being made fun off just people can be mean
What you say about others hurts you and every one around you if you have a opinion about some ones life and its nice why don't you keep it to your self i respect your opinion but what you said about hapikdo is rather mean your not only offending one person but every one who dose it. And btw for your info i have seen him use it in a fight a real fight and hapikdo is use full. Anways why dont you go to your sensie or how ever its spelled and tell him what you said to me see what he thinks about it
most of them have NO IDEA. I say most because there are some, very solemn few that have trained in the traditional style. But the training methods are considered abusive in america's society. The training i went through would be considered such but it made me so very strong in such a short amount of time. Others have hurt me my entire life with words and actions, its REALITY get OVER it and grow up. Life sucks, oh well.
yeah it is. I bought it through budk though.i also bought two bokkens from cold steel of the same material. they really do make quality weapons and sparring equipment.
Actually, how the Sjambok made its way to South Africa was when Malayan slaves were imported to South Africa, the instrument and its name (know as a Cambuk in Malaysian) were imported with them, the material was changed to hide from wood, and the name was finally incorporated into the Afrikaans, spelled as Sjambok.
and now cold steel has taken it up on their own and the material has been changed from wood to a certain poly-material. Extremely durable. I have a bokken of the same material and have put it through various tests, mainly out of curiousity.
yeah. i've had this eating problem since childhood. I've tried to get help, I'm actually alot smaller than I used to be. I was twice as big about 6 years ago. since that time my weights generally stayed the same. I eat too much and I work out often so it stays in the same area. but thank you. Beside my weight i have, through sensei, learned to use it at my advantage. My weight gives me more momentum and as a result more power. It allows me to strike harder and faster.
Well i commend for that. THat's very martial arts, it's common not to waver away vfrom your weakness but instead adapt them to become strengths. I did that when i had a bad knee with my aikido.
Exactly my thinking. I have two bad knees. Haha. I've broken 14 bones over the past 6 years. (unitentionally of course) i just tend to have bad luck i guess. and ironically none of them were from fighting. well 1 but that was a sparring accident. I'd tell you about my knees but its a looong story. anyways i've built muscle around any injuries and I stretch each joint every day. They aren't weaknesses at all. quite the oppposite. I bring more attention to them and build them up.
Very impressive shaun. I really liked the form and you did it quite fluid which is nice to see. A lot of people are very rigid between the moves. The only negative i could find is your left hip is open to attack at during a few of your moves. An oponent can step into your attack to easily or side step to your left as you bring the staff around from behind your back.
well this is just a demonstration of a few simple movements and strikes. in a fight the moves would be differed. they would need to adapt to the opponents attacks in defense and offense no? in a sparring match i tend to move differently but with a similar effect if that makes any sense? but thanks for the comment
it was a simple demonstration. i didn't rehearse it. the moves are slow in order to show where the hell i'm going with the movements. and i'm not a representation of anyone but myself so get over it.
haha pretty much. but its not a whip. it wields similar to a whip and resembles similar movements but its made out of a special material. and in more of a stable state.
well it depends really. you want to find a good edged weapons trainer. a local martial arts studio is the best place to check. but then again most places are americanized and focus on tournament style fighting. which is completely useless out on the street. it just looks nice. its not real martial arts its just showing of a few fancy kicks that would get your ass kicked by a street fighter haha.
Lompoc high School. Seems now fewer and fewer schools require a senior project for graduation. at LHS it's required for graduation and is considered the largest project of your high school career.
haha yeah. I didn't really rehearse it or anything. just winged it. I managed to get tounge-tied quite often in that video haha. sounded idiotic at the end of it. but whatever.
It was more to show the point of impact of the weapon in the movement. I kept complete control of the weapon. The weapon is only an extension of yourself and should be wielded as such no? I kept it within striking distance but not close enough to actually hit the camera. Thanks for the feedback.
Well ass holes will be ass holes. I can't change who I am you know? Just because I've trained so long and all this shit i've done with martial arts and my life doesn't mean i'll have a 12 pack and perfect body. I don't eat right. I wasn't brought up eating right so I have that problem. who doesn't have problems?
People I am' who I am. If you dont like it then you don't its not my problem but I don't need insults or bull shit. please keep the insults to yourselves only questions and comments about the video. Thank you
well if the opponent is in striking range it can be dealt with. however if they're out of striking range ( arms length ) then I just do what they ask of me. I train to defend against opponents not speeding bullets.
then pray they don't shoot you? what kind of rediculous question is that? No one can defeat a gun you know that and so does everyone else. Don't ask me idiotic obvious questions. If you have any real quetsions then please step up otherwise waste your time somewhere else.
Its a mixture of chinese and japanese. I was trained mainly in japanese weapon styles such as swordmanship with a boken. Sensei has focused on chinese pressure points and stances as well as japanese kicks and strikes. I also learned brizillian ju jitsu and a few other styels beforehand. so my movements are a combination of all the styles i've learned.
Dude this is actually pretty sick man, Im with zhagray. Props.

Ok, you can put it in one of those big trekking backpacks but that's not the typical outfit for strolling through town at night...
sunsea74 2 years ago
haha well you would have to generally have a medical excuse to carry around a cane but i get your opinion. I wouldn't EVER use a sjambok on another human being. A cane or walking staff would cause less damage, its more easily controlled than a sjambok. Easier to maneuver and easier to control in speed. So for a general street fight if you absolutely have to use a weapon as cowardous as that is then a cane or walking stick would be best.
saxdude6 2 years ago
Ok Shawn I'm confused now...
7DailySins 2 years ago
Are we talking about a wooden sjambok? lol From experience the wooden sjambok causes much less and is great for beginners and/or sparring. But not the poly- material sjambok. I'm confused as well. I've seen the effects of the poly one in comparison to the wooden. The poly is much more effective and used correctly can cause serious harm. Don't know what the hell they're smoking >.>
saxdude6 2 years ago
Then this forum members could also claim that a knife can't hurt anyone seriously after they used the blunt side of the blade. ;-)
MrSammyHain 2 years ago 2
lmao indeed
saxdude6 2 years ago
As far as I know, Flexible whips like the Sjambok don't break bones, thought they COULD break the skin and god knows they hurt.
Sticks and solid inflexible canes are much more likely to break bones, though less likely to break the skin.
wahathetanuki 2 years ago
When have i ever said anything about breaking bones? Yes obviously a solid infelxible object is more like to break a bone than a flexible poly material this i know. What is up with people recently, they ask obvious questions and make obvious statements. The sjambok is capable of causing internal damage and yes breaking skin. And of course that hurts like hell. Used to wrap around oppenents arms it can assist in breaking bones but not the impact of the weapon alone.
saxdude6 2 years ago
I can´t take this serious! You don´t have any balance in your body. Your movements are not like a trained person.
felicam2001 2 years ago
If you can't take it then don't watch, lol your nothing at all to me, a fucking claud of dirt on the ground. Your opinion means nothing. Simply look at different videos and talk to someone who cares about what you have to say. hahahaha
saxdude6 2 years ago
Cool video! Does anyone know if those sjamboks can be brought into Canada?
spendarthegreat 2 years ago 2
Anyone remember starwars kid?
jaekn 2 years ago 2
Not yet arrived . . . I'll keep it in my car most of the time . . . you know, sometimes you need it when punks bother you . . ;)
But pne question, is this tool is dangerious? I mean it cuts the flesh if it's used aggressively?
albaraki 2 years ago
the material is one of the most durable of its kind. Trust me, i've nailed myself with it once. had a blood mark an inch deep for 3 weeks.
saxdude6 2 years ago
Thanks . . . I really appreciate the advice . .
albaraki 2 years ago
no prob. I'm messed around with them long enough to know a few things haha
saxdude6 2 years ago
Oh . . I don't want to make you angry, man . . .
Your skill is awesoem . . .
BTW, Is this Sjambok bought from Cold Steel?
albaraki 2 years ago
yes it is.
saxdude6 2 years ago
ordered one . . . :)
Thanks.
albaraki 2 years ago
cool, don't worry man i'm not angry at anyone on here. It really takes a lot to get me angry. How do you like the tool? What kind of tests have you done with it?
saxdude6 2 years ago
Received it . . . :)
it's longer than I expected . . .and heavier too.
After playing with it for a while . . I now admire your light hand . . .
I ordered also Brooklyn Crusher Bat . . .it's awesome, too.
albaraki 2 years ago 2
lol i know what you mean, you'd think it'd be alot lighter. But it takes alot of practice and dedication to wield safely and effectively. good luck and BE CAREFUL haha. I enjoy it, but not the marks its left.
saxdude6 2 years ago
Your skill is very good, and as you can tell from my name...Im a fan of em
sjambok1 2 years ago
thank you for the comment i'm glad you think so =)
saxdude6 2 years ago
oh your looking for more of a screamer stick. Those are best made from wood but if you prefer cold steel's poly material i'm sure you could custom order such a weapon through them, I doubt it would be expensive at all. just specify the type of design or if you want to make it simpler you could just cut that one down as you suggested. it may be a bit rough to do so though.
saxdude6 2 years ago
yeah, if only i cared? lol
saxdude6 2 years ago
I'm not trying to be mean here, but in my opinion, it seems to me you are full of yourself and I think that's why your sensei doesn't teach you anymore, martial arts are not for "dangerous" people.
Fredjo88 2 years ago
lol your not being mean your being arrogant. Take a look in the mirror.
saxdude6 2 years ago
"wich i've made myself out of......oak".
when you say oak, you face seems to look a lil arrogant. lol
maskevito 2 years ago
lol yeah it does. but out of the entire video thats all you noticed? That video was done on a whim, no one really helped me with it nor did i plan on how i was going to word anything. haha. Very poorly prepared video. but at least now i'm over 100lbs lighter and much faster.
saxdude6 2 years ago
good for you, man. I wich you the best of luck
maskevito 2 years ago
indeed, thanks you too.
saxdude6 2 years ago
hola everyone!
saxdude6 2 years ago
I was watching this thinking " this is going t obe pathetic" but it kicked ass
How do I learn those moves bro?
lasdhkfdslhdlshaf 2 years ago
lol thanks.. If you have any further questions feel free to ask on here.
saxdude6 2 years ago
I lost about 100lbs since that video though. I move much faster and strike much harder.
saxdude6 2 years ago
haha, i look back on this video, how the hell did i ever let myself get so absolutely HUGE. haha. its rediculous. Well one things for sure, i'm never going back thats for fucking sure. haha
saxdude6 3 years ago
wow nice skills, we need more people focused like you are, with the self control
laupy1 3 years ago
and who is we?
saxdude6 3 years ago
people in the world today
laupy1 3 years ago
ah, agreed, but the world is an unreasonable place.
saxdude6 3 years ago
Did I hear a "SHIT!!!" at 1:39, lol... anywayz cool video... I got myself a Cold Steel shambok too. good skills ya got there.
KoRnYwAyZ 3 years ago
i'm not 100% sure on the legality of carrying around the short-staff sjambok but i do believe its considered a weapon unless there's a medical excuse, a lagit one and its the standard 40' cane size
saxdude6 3 years ago
hey dude y did u say this sjambok is expensive , i bought 42 inch online for like 25 inclusive of shipping and i live outside the us . nice vid tho
Alphawaste123456 3 years ago
you massive massive massive Gareth. You are my new hero
TWOmagazine 3 years ago
yes i was pretty big back then, and i still have this video as a reminder of what i will NEVER go back to. I've lost 80lbs in sheer fat since this video, i'm faster, stronger, more athletic and energized than ever before. but i'd rather be a hero from what i've accomplished health wise than anything. did you mean that post as an insult or a compliment?
saxdude6 3 years ago
How did you lose the weight? I'm in need of slimming down.
ParanoidGallows 3 years ago
why do you deserve my knowledge? my training program is beyond unique and works FAR faster than any other you've heard of or seen. twice the gains of traditional weight lifting in half the time. not to mention a general lean protein low carb diet.
saxdude6 3 years ago
In that case, share your knowledge with the world so there's less fat people.
ParanoidGallows 3 years ago
lol because the world is full of idiots that lack the will power and determination to withstand the workouts, this program is by far the hardest training program anywhere. it takes on the most amount of stress in the shortest amount of time possible. most students give up within the first week. so if you want to know then you have to pay, either its your heart to the training or your damn wallet without either its a waste of time.
saxdude6 3 years ago
The sjambok is a pretty interesting tool. I understand that it can inflict a terrific amount of pain. I saw some sites offering "authentic" ones made from hippopotamus hide, wild stuff. The South African police use Sjamboks made from plastic, and apparently those work also. Of course the item has strong connotations due to historically being used for beating slaves, but I guess that shouldn't take away from its utility.
modelcitizen72 3 years ago
I would agree. Its extremely durable and effective. But very weak for defense.
saxdude6 3 years ago
yes it can and it does. the amount of possible torque you can obtain can cause HUGE damage. I was just reading through some old comments. What the police use is more so a type of screamer stick if your talking about the simple-stick without the added handle.
saxdude6 3 years ago
I'm amazed no one made fun of you for this. I have a friend who is a black belt in Hapkido I think its called he did a demo for the talent show and no one has let him live it down seance then. he messed up a lot because he was nevus but I have seen him in smaller demos he is pretty good
NewFoundAnima 3 years ago
and why would i be made fun of? I made a few errors in what i said, thats all. My technique was well done and the moves were executed in a proper fashion. Hapkido is a showcase style, its not based on traditional styles or practical styles its based on tournament fighting. any fighter i've seen from that style is taught to do one thing and one thing only, show off. when it comes to a street fight, they'll be on the ground in seconds and wonder why their martial arts training didn't work
saxdude6 3 years ago
Ahhh that's why your were not made fun off. your a ass your self. well that really shows you study martial arts. anyways i didn't mean to a fend you about being made fun off just people can be mean
NewFoundAnima 3 years ago
how am I an ass hole? I'm honest in what I say and I'm straight forward. If it offends you then I apologize
saxdude6 3 years ago
What you say about others hurts you and every one around you if you have a opinion about some ones life and its nice why don't you keep it to your self i respect your opinion but what you said about hapikdo is rather mean your not only offending one person but every one who dose it. And btw for your info i have seen him use it in a fight a real fight and hapikdo is use full. Anways why dont you go to your sensie or how ever its spelled and tell him what you said to me see what he thinks about it
NewFoundAnima 3 years ago
most of them have NO IDEA. Life sucks, oh well.
saxdude6 3 years ago
are you the guy in the coldsteel demo videos??
NeoQuello 3 years ago
no...
saxdude6 3 years ago
for any who may be mistaken. In this video I don't say the word "shit" my kia sounds like the word "shit" i know but i'm not actually saying it.
saxdude6 3 years ago
Is that the cold steel sjambok?
GagatesPLEASE 3 years ago
yeah it is. I bought it through budk though.i also bought two bokkens from cold steel of the same material. they really do make quality weapons and sparring equipment.
saxdude6 3 years ago
Sjambok is South African, and is in no way related to any eastern fighting combats.
GagatesPLEASE 3 years ago 2
it is an african made weapoon yes. But it can be used in any style or form effectively
saxdude6 3 years ago
Actually, how the Sjambok made its way to South Africa was when Malayan slaves were imported to South Africa, the instrument and its name (know as a Cambuk in Malaysian) were imported with them, the material was changed to hide from wood, and the name was finally incorporated into the Afrikaans, spelled as Sjambok.
ParanoidGallows 3 years ago
and now cold steel has taken it up on their own and the material has been changed from wood to a certain poly-material. Extremely durable. I have a bokken of the same material and have put it through various tests, mainly out of curiousity.
saxdude6 3 years ago
yeah. i've had this eating problem since childhood. It allows me to strike harder and faster.
saxdude6 3 years ago
Well i commend for that. THat's very martial arts, it's common not to waver away vfrom your weakness but instead adapt them to become strengths. I did that when i had a bad knee with my aikido.
ObscureDream 3 years ago
Exactly my thinking. I have two bad knees. Haha. I've broken 14 bones over the past 6 years. (unitentionally of course) i just tend to have bad luck i guess. and ironically none of them were from fighting. well 1 but that was a sparring accident. I'd tell you about my knees but its a looong story. anyways i've built muscle around any injuries and I stretch each joint every day. They aren't weaknesses at all. quite the oppposite. I bring more attention to them and build them up.
saxdude6 3 years ago
Very impressive shaun. I really liked the form and you did it quite fluid which is nice to see. A lot of people are very rigid between the moves. The only negative i could find is your left hip is open to attack at during a few of your moves. An oponent can step into your attack to easily or side step to your left as you bring the staff around from behind your back.
RoryMcFarling 3 years ago
well this is just a demonstration of a few simple movements and strikes. in a fight the moves would be differed. they would need to adapt to the opponents attacks in defense and offense no? in a sparring match i tend to move differently but with a similar effect if that makes any sense? but thanks for the comment
saxdude6 3 years ago
it was a simple demonstration. i didn't rehearse it. the moves are slow in order to show where the hell i'm going with the movements. and i'm not a representation of anyone but myself so get over it.
saxdude6 3 years ago
haha pretty much. but its not a whip. it wields similar to a whip and resembles similar movements but its made out of a special material. and in more of a stable state.
saxdude6 3 years ago
Where is the best place to get started in edged weapons training and martial arts in general?
Sorry don't know much about it but interested.
gingeroctober 3 years ago 2
well it depends really. you want to find a good edged weapons trainer. a local martial arts studio is the best place to check. but then again most places are americanized and focus on tournament style fighting. which is completely useless out on the street. it just looks nice. its not real martial arts its just showing of a few fancy kicks that would get your ass kicked by a street fighter haha.
saxdude6 3 years ago
Senior project for what?
binwei 3 years ago
Lompoc high School. Seems now fewer and fewer schools require a senior project for graduation. at LHS it's required for graduation and is considered the largest project of your high school career.
saxdude6 3 years ago
Originally it was for My senior project for senior year in high school. lol although I ended up having a live demonstration with my sensei.
saxdude6 2 years ago
I can tell that you've put a great deal of thought into this video....good work bro!
billythehobbit 3 years ago
haha yeah. I didn't really rehearse it or anything. just winged it. I managed to get tounge-tied quite often in that video haha. sounded idiotic at the end of it. but whatever.
saxdude6 3 years ago
great video, but in a few cases it seemed as if you were going to hit the camera...
Rhinoman45672 3 years ago
It was more to show the point of impact of the weapon in the movement. I kept complete control of the weapon. The weapon is only an extension of yourself and should be wielded as such no? I kept it within striking distance but not close enough to actually hit the camera. Thanks for the feedback.
saxdude6 3 years ago
Well ass holes will be ass holes. I can't change who I am you know? Just because I've trained so long and all this shit i've done with martial arts and my life doesn't mean i'll have a 12 pack and perfect body. I don't eat right. I wasn't brought up eating right so I have that problem. who doesn't have problems?
saxdude6 3 years ago
People I am' who I am. If you dont like it then you don't its not my problem but I don't need insults or bull shit. please keep the insults to yourselves only questions and comments about the video. Thank you
saxdude6 3 years ago
the only thing that sucks is what if the opponent has a gun?
jsn1981 3 years ago
well if the opponent is in striking range it can be dealt with. however if they're out of striking range ( arms length ) then I just do what they ask of me. I train to defend against opponents not speeding bullets.
saxdude6 3 years ago
then pray they don't shoot you? what kind of rediculous question is that? No one can defeat a gun you know that and so does everyone else. Don't ask me idiotic obvious questions. If you have any real quetsions then please step up otherwise waste your time somewhere else.
saxdude6 2 years ago
Its a mixture of chinese and japanese. I was trained mainly in japanese weapon styles such as swordmanship with a boken. Sensei has focused on chinese pressure points and stances as well as japanese kicks and strikes. I also learned brizillian ju jitsu and a few other styels beforehand. so my movements are a combination of all the styles i've learned.
