  • Thanks for the help! I'm in the process of a surrealistic-style painting where I'm using clouds and I just couldn't get them to look, well, like clouds. This really helps!

  • the gray purple color is right on. i think you went too far with the highlights but i realize you're giving a lesson. good stuff!!

  • ohhh thanks sooo much! you are way more useful than my jerk of an oilpainting teacher in college was six years ago lol. great stuff! :)

  • Can you post a video on painting a landscape using nothing but painting knifes please?

  • Great

  • Indiscritível!

  • You're very welcome. Thanks for watching!

  • Absolutely gratefull with you!!!!! I love to take classes with your videos!!! I'm learn a lot!!!! Thanks again.

  • Hey, i actually learned form this :D Thank you!

  • Hi! You're a very good teacher! Thank you very much!

  • ahh yay thanks so much :]

  • Wow, I think I can actually do this! :-) Thank you very much.

  • Hello sir, I loved your video painting very ,very nice, it's amazing....

  • this is a very helpful video. it also inspires me to go grab my paints and start painting. :)

  • Mr. Bickford. Your videos are more didactics. Your method is clear and perfect. With you I am learning to paint and learning English too. I appreciated your videos.

    Cordial greetings from Colombia.

  • The problem with having a formularized way to paint, is it keeps looking worse and worse after the initial excitement of applying paint to canvas.

  • My friend also deals with painting.

    Visit his site:

    ww.kutijozsef.fw.hu

  • Thank you very much. I randomly purchased a ton of stuff with only a small idea of how to use it. I have made several paintings already that have taught me how to do and NOT to do things :P This was really helpful for me! Thanks!

  • thank you so much sir ^.^

  • Unreal mate! Subscribed!

  • thnkx Alot....

  • Thank you. I hate to say it, but I find the same thing with other instructors I've seen and worked with. Not enough explanation of the "how" and "why". Just going through the motions. I approach every class from the student's viewpoint and try to elaborate on every aspect, in detail.

  • @wilsonbickford

    Man.... u r awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

Ur lessons are simple and easy. How lucky are your students to have a teacher like you!!!!

Great teacher.... Can u show how to make portraits with acrylic paint? And pls teach us how to give shading?

Wilson, I am a beginner in acrylic painting and I just want to know how many types of brushes are there?

  • you're a great teacher. You've put so much detail in explaining your process and that is something that other instructors lack.

  • Thank you! As a beginner with just three paintings to my name, it was amazing to watch them take form. I've been watching the evening sky lately and there are pinks, violets and yellows to consider too, but I'll start with your lessons.

  • thanks for your response and help, will be very useful to me, this additive does a beautiful job, thank you!

  • Thank you SO much!

  • just bought that crap for 10$, applied before using oil colors. DIDNT do a crap, god damnit colors still turn into grains and DO NOT mix, wth -.-

  • @mytubenik Check your paint tubes. When you say "it's turning into grains", I'd be willing to bet you have some Acrylic paint that you're trying to mix with your Oils. That won't work and it will "pill" up. I've seen my students do this before.

  • so what did he apply before starting painting? I didnt apply anything and started to pain and color turned into "grains" :\

  • thanks for this video, it did take a lot of practice before i was satisfied with my work, but definitely worth it!

  • i learn a lot in this video! thank you

  • How is your pallate so clean?!

  • "Black" is a useful addition to the palette, if one knows how to use it properly ( as in "don't over-use it" ) Many people have trouble handling it and get "mud" as a result.

Helen Van Wyk says it best, "Don't leave Black off your palette just because someone tells you to".

  • The frist thing a student should be taught is to throw out the tubes of black!

  • @Fronts1000 Black is useful i oil painting, as long as you know how to use it. You must mean that comment for watercolor, pure black isn't used for that. It is made.

  • You make this look so easy! The big thing I have to practice with this lesson is the wrist movement.

  • Thank YOU!!!! perfect explanation :) totally understandable no wonder your a teacher

  • Hello..

Just tried to paint this one and FAILD :(

i really loved these clouds but i can't paint them :c

  • @xXxTeenQueenxXx

Make sure you're not overworking everything. It's easy to over-blend everything into mush. And remember that there's no substitute for perseverance and practice.

  • @wilsonbickford Can you tell me how exactly you're suppost to do the shading on realistic photoes of people? I'm doing a painting of Emma Watson and need help :/ I'll send you the picture if you're willling to help me.

  • @Thomas11611 You'll find that by using a yellow, a red and a "brown" mixed into a LOT of white will give you a broad range of possible skin tones. Use slightly less white for the shadowed areas. More in the highlights. Try Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson and Burnt Umber for starters. Remember that it'll be way more white than anything, so start with white and mix small amounts of the other colors into it.

  • @wilsonbickford I used foundation on my oil painting lol.. did I ruin it just by doing that?

  • Comment removed

  • helo sir wilson...

what will i do to make my black to be opaque?...my black is a mixture of french ultramarine blue and raw umber...when i start to block painting on a toned canvas, the under part shows or its too transparent....

  • @albertism1127

You are using 2 transparent colors, so you will need to add something more opaque. However, since you're looking for a dark value you can't use "white", or anything light. Try using Ultramarine Blue and a little Cerulean Blue mixed into either Van Dyke Brown, or Burnt Umber ( instead of "Raw" Umber ) The Cerulean will make it more opaque.

  • You're very welcome. Join me on Facebook for updates on my product line and class schedules.

  • Thank you for this

  • Thats good but check out Super Six Painting by artrant on U Tube

    totaly blew my mind !!!!!!!!!!!

  • thank you!

  • That's great job Wilson, you should do a video about "Mist" like in mountain mist etc.

  • you are AMAZING wow thats awesome

  • is it easier to start with the gray part of the cloud first than work with lighter colors.

  • @freshnikekix1 I think so. That allows me to position the cloud on the canvas and get the basic shape of the cloud established. Then, I know where to highlight the topmost edges. It could be done the other way around, you'd just need to form the tops first, then put the gray underneath. It'll achieve the same end. Do it whichever way is best for you.

  • I tend to stick with a firmer bodied paint. It works best for wet-on-wet applications. WINTON Oils work well for this method. My Signature Wilson Bickford Oils will be on the market later this year and they will be very firm and thick, as per my specifications.

  • Hi just wanted to know if you use standard oil paint or the so called firm oil paint which I find rather expensive, thanks and great video

  • Hi Wilson, are spectacular thunderstorms (supercells) difficult to paint and have you ever tried painting them?

  • @Agui007 I've done a few in the past. Not really difficult, just different, both in the structure ( shapes ) and colors ( more grays ). I would recommend getting a good reference photo and "painting what you see".

  • Hello Mr.Wilson, I'm Menna Zean from Facebook, I just want to tell you that I really don't know how to thank you for teaching me how to paint, cause really when I paint & I finish my painting I feel that feeling that I really could do something great!! :-)))

I want to ask for your advise about acrylic colours?? do you think I can use them to paint the same painting you teach us?? or do you prefer oil more??

& by the way, Mom & Dad was going crazy when I show the my first oil painting (sunset) :)

  • @mirakissez88 By The way you're so much famous in Egypt, I Hope you visit us one day :-)

  • @mirakissez88 Hi Menna,

If you're a beginner, I think you'll find Oils much easier to grasp. The same techniques can apply to Acrylics, but you have to get used to their very fast drying-time. I think it's easier to learn the basics in Oils first, then move on to Acrylics. Personally, I prefer Oils because of their very rich, vibrant, luminous color. To me, Acrylics appear rather dull, as far as their intensity goes.

  • thank you for uloading just started out and really strugeling wih clouds right now this really helped

  • thank you bick

  • Hello, I'm just wondering where you teach, how old you have to be to enter into your class, and the cost to participate. Thanks

  • @0xxangelxkissxx0 Most of my current classes are "closer to home" in NY State and Vermont. But, I have held sessions in Florida and Oregon, as well. Most of my classes are suitable for ages 8 and up. I also periodically conduct "kid's classes", specifically for ages 8 to 18. The fees vary on the class length, the subject and mileage incurred.

  • @wilsonbickford Ahhh well message me if you ever want to teach in TX DFW area, i would be happy to be in the class. :)

  • what's the size of canvas?????

  • @jojoptoni09 It's a canvas panel. I believe it was a 16" x 20".

  • @wilsonbickford thanks:))))

  • @wilsonbickford thanks:))))

  • you are using canvas in this video??????

  • thanks for sharing

  • Beautiful

  • hi wilson, my name is abby. and i just love watching you paint. you're so inspiring. i really hope to be as amazing at art as you are one day. i love to paint, i just don't feel like i'm good enough.

  • @AbigailLynn14 Painting is an "acquired skill", not so much a "talent". If you practice earnestly, improvement will surely follow. No one starts out "good enough". It takes practice and perseverance. Don't be afraid to throw some paint around and make a few mistakes, as that will ultimately be your best "teacher". I wish you artistic success!

  • just wanted to say thanks. When i started oil painting your videos were a great help when i was stuck with something. This was the first video i watched of yours.

  • @antlusignan Glad to be of help. Thanks for watching!

  • Thanks for sharing, and for the help. Great tutorials!

  • i love your videos =)

  • when you add each layer do you begin higher than the layer before?

  • @62aritch Not necessarily, but you easily can. It gives you the opportunity to "tweak" the final outline shape of the cloud, to get a more interesting contour.

  • i am very glad to see such nice straight forward artwork

    thank you

  • all of your lessons are terrific Wilson....just cant "choose" a favorite!

  • Thanx. Perfect for me!!!!!!

  • Whether or not you buy my "crap" is up to you. But, at least you got a free lesson out of it, didn't you?

  • This guy kind of comes off as a know it all who wants you to buy his crap. Good painting though.

  • Bravissimo

  • I love your video's your a great speaker teacher and artist.

  • @Rileysport1 Thank you. I have just filmed more lessons, which should be posted within the next week, or so. Please check them out!

  • What is Magic Whit?

Can I just use white zinc paint?

Is Magic White the same as liquid or clear white?

  • @zabezabe Yes, Liquid White is basically the same thing, just a different brand.

When my product line becomes available, I will have my own version, FastFlo White Base Medium.

  • great....

  • hi

    great video,

i am just a beginner, but wenn you say: i wash the brush. do you wash it in water or in the brush cleaner (odorless mineral spiritis). and is it normal that it takes a week to dry a painting. because last week i made a forrest painting and it is still not dry

  • @marnix0steenbeek Since I'm using Oils in these YT videos, I'm cleaning the brushes in odorless mineral spirits. And yes, oils are slow drying and 2 to 3 weeks is not uncommon for them to be "dry to the touch". There are mediums you can add which will acclerate the drying time A LOT! Sometimes, even over-night ( with thin paint layers ), or 2 - 3 days for heavier applications. I use LIQUIN , which is an alkyd-based medium. You can find it at just about any art supply store.

  • @wilsonbickford oke thank you so much

  • Hi Wilson,

I've tried to buy a 2" and a 1" brush like the ones used to paint a sky in the local art and craft store but no luck finding a good one. Are there any in particular that you would recommend? If so, where can I buy them?

    Thank you much!!!

  • Wonderful lesson for a wonderful clouds's painting! Thank you sir!

  • this is awesome where do you get your brushes and paint from? do you know any sites that can get it delivered?

  • @khOii Two of my favorite on-line sources are jerrysartarama and dickblick

  • Hi Wilson, I tried to paint a sky and I found myself picking up too much of my background (blue) while trying to "curl" the fan brush to make the clouds. I had a hard time trying to keep the brush clean as I was picking up too much of the blue even with the lightest strokes. I did not use any medium to prep the canvas, cardboard canvas, that is. Would that have been the problem? Also, I noticed that the colors would keep running off with the following brush stroke. Any suggestions? Thank you!!

  • @jgcelis

When working on a "wet" canvas, you're always at the mercy of the wet background paint. I use a LOT of white paint on the brush when applying my clouds and I wipe and reload the brush VERY often. I lay the paint heavily on top of the canvas and only blend it just enough to soften some of the strokes. Overblending will keep dredging up the blue from underneath.

  • I realy like'd the viedo and learning from it. Thanks again. Arthur

  • would you be my teacher?? wow!! so wonderful job!!

  • it's amazing! you are so talented! :) i was wondering how you clean your brushes?

    thank you,

    Julia

  • @MartosJuli

I just use 100% odorless mineral spirits.

  • @wilsonbickford Thank you! :)) I will try oil painting this year, cause now i went to high school, and i have to choose an activity that i will enjoy doing every week 4 times at home. :) and i love painting.. i wanna be an artist when i grow up :)

  • Bob Ross paints like this. He was the best. This guys is great too!

  • Hi Wilson, by using the oil base medium, can you use any type of paints or is it just made for oil paints??? thanks

  • @chk2001 This particular medium is used ONLY for Oils, but you can find similar water-based mediums for use with Acrylics.

  • Absolutely brilliant videos !!!!

I'm just about to start drawing with oil paints. I just want to ask you, how to start and get into it? For example what colours, brushes etc.

    Thank you

  • @BGnorman

Start with the basic tools as shown in my videos. A large 2" brush, a 1" brush, a Fan brush, Script Liner and Painting Knife. As for colors, get the primaries, Red, Yellow & Blue. ( and White, of course ) From there you can mix Orange, Green & Violet.

  • @wilsonbickford Thank you for your respond and brilliant advice!

  • Wow! I wish more people could teach stuff like this guy!

  • Does anyone know how they used to paint during the times of VanGogh? I know they used to go to the store, buy the canvas, then tack it onto the frame. Then I'm lost. Did they paint it with rabbit skin glue then apply the oil paint? Or did they sketch the design w/ pencil then hit it w/ rabbit skin glue than apply the oil? Then what did they do next? Anyone know? Much appreciated!!

  • @quantumpolice I have to plead ignorance on this issue. Nowadays we come from the world of "pre-primed, pre-stretched, store-bought canvas", so preparing one's own painting surface is not a necessity as it once was. But, if I were to venture a guess, I would say the logical progression would be to stretch the canvas, apply the primer, then move ahead with the sketch. At least, that's how I would approach it.

  • @wilsonbickford What's the 'primer?"

  • @quantumpolice It's a thin oil-based White medium. You apply it to the canvas, then work your colors into it. It's great for blending. I have my own version of this type of medium coming out on the market in the near future.

  • Beautiful! You make such a good teacher and artist sir! hope i can be as good as you one day :). I'm sooo subing to ur channel :D

  • awesome! thanks!

  • than u !.. very helpful .. I mind.. my mom want to learn how to paint .. I'm just translating T.T

  • Thanks a lot ...this is very helpful. Could you please give me sime tips about how to great a Roz ? cheers,Rashin

  • Going to Practice..=)

  • That was super helpful, thanks Mr. Bickford!

  • @airking32 You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • thanks

  • very helpful for a chicken like me, thanks

  • wow thanks... i found this video very helpful in a few degrees. first, it was extremely helpful in terms of the techniques and styles, but also you gave me some good reasoning to take with me to other paintings. ex. the sky is lighter at the horizon, clouds fade on the bottom, highlights hit on only certain sides of a cloud, purple and yellow appear in clouds...

    to summarize: thanks!

  • very easy technique

  • @reemasheril

    Very easy, yet very effective.

  • wow GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks for this lessons it really helpful !

  • soooo good! I could hate you for how you make it look so simple! :D

  • @problemimentali

Once you get enough practice and experience in, it IS simple. YOU can do it!

  • @problemimentali

    hope so :)

My main problem at the moment is shading and blending colors, since I'm totally self-taught I don't know any techniques, I just proceed by experiments, but it's not easy. Do you have any video about the very basis?

Thanks a lot for your effort

  • hi! im new to oil painting, and im overwhelmed with all the stuff and tools for it. do u have a video on the basic tools, mediums, brushes, and paints to use for starters like me? im in the Philippines and its hard to look for materials here. thank you! I'm learning a lot from ur vids :)

  • @selectionsbyER Unfortunately, I don'e have a video like that. However, I'm currently working with a manufacturer to produce my own signature line of oil painting products.( paints, brushes, mediums, canvas, palette, etc. ) These items will be sold individually and also in "kits", which will include everything you'll need to start painting. Hopefully, these will be available before the end of the year and you'll be able to purchase them through my website.

  • so cool

  • thank you the master.

  • the master. help comments my art. please.......

  • @kopooart I just checked out your paintings that are posted on YouTube. They are VERY good. You definitely understand the principles of aerial and linear perspective and it shows clearly in your work. Your sense and use of color is also admirable. Keep up the great artwork!

  • thank you master. i love your art. it a good jop.........

  • @kopooart

    Thank YOU for watching!

  • thank you mister master

  • befor we paint we put our brushes in water ?? or is it a oil you u sing in a silver bucket there ?? i sorry to ask many qustion becouse i new in this oil paint...

  • @TheSependerman

I'm using odorless mineral spirits ( paint thinner ) to thin my paints and clean my brushes.

  • tq..can i ask another qustion next time

  • @TheSependerman Yes.

  • hey mister...can i ask you some thing ??

what is a alexzander magic white ??

  • @TheSependerman

It's a thin, white oil based medium used as a basecoat to blend your colors into. It's not available in any stores, only on-line from the maker. You can make your own version by thinning down tubed white oil paint with some mineral spirits or painting medium. It just needs to be thinned to a mayonaisse consistency so you can spread a THIN layer on the canvas. In the near future, I'll have my own signature oil painting products on my website, which will include my version of this.

  • Thank you very much. The lesson was most informative and I enjoyed watching it.

  • @mtiebi2008

Thank you. I have many lessons posted on YT. Search my name bring all of them up.

  • I tried my first oil on canvas painting today, I was so sad at my failure that I almost gave up my art career altogether. but I have a few questions. Do you have to use linseed oil with the paint, what does it help to do that? and the stuff you put on the canvas at the beginning, does that make it easeir to work with the oil paints, thank you for your great tutorial, I'll try again tomorrow, and attempt to make this style suitable for me!

  • @ChocolateyChocobo13

I don't use linseed oil and never have. It's VERY slow drying and tends to "yellow" over time. When I need a medium for thinning or glazing purposes, I use LIQUIN. ( most art stores carry it ) The white oil basecoat makes blending easier and allows subtle value colorations. In the near future, I will have my own signature version of this medium available on my website. Don't get discouraged and give up. Success depends on practice.

  • you work is great...keep it up!

  • @freebutterfly90

    Thank you!

  • hi there Mr. Wilson...may i ask you if theres really a difference between a filbert and a cats tongue brush? im quite confused between the two...Thanks

  • @albertism1127

Basically, I think they're the same shape of brush. I think different makers just have different names for them.

  • hey everyone!

i just uploaded a video of an oil painting that took me 5 months to finish.

i would like to get some feedback on it. so if everyone that reads this could check it out and let me know what you think it would help me out! the video is called -- monumental oil painting- from start to finish. thanks everyone!

  • thank you so much for posting this video. I have painted with acrylic for a little while and just now switching to oil. This video was a great help to me in terms of new techniques. I really appreciate it.

  • Excellent.. I Cant wait to try it ..!!

  • thanks man

  • Nice clouds demonstration!

  • thanks Wilson,I also got started painting watching videos my grandmother recorded of Helen Van Wyk and Alexander; and Bob Ross of course. Its always importiant to note the painters who have gotten us where we are today.

  • @christopherb786 If you take the time to visit the "Art Classes" and Gallery" pages of my website, you'll see that although certain ( many ) individuals have been influences, my work is MY work and not a clone of someone else's. You tweak, change and mold techniques to fit your own style.

  • I really appreciate your sharing your skills. It looks really great and I cant wait to try it.

    Thanks a lot!

  • Comment removed

  • @christopherb786

I've learned from many sources, both from watching other artists ( Bill Alexander, Bob Ross, Jerry Yarnell, Helen Van Wyk, etc. ) and from much practice and trial and error developing my own way of doing things. That's how we all get started.

  • @wilsonbickford

Hello there...I was trying to do the same as you taught,But I didn't get that purple that you mixed with the black to make a purplish grey.

What that color again please(purple).I use Pebeo oil colors that's why i get here in India. I made the base white with thinner and titanium white.

    Thanks!!

  • here mar from portugal. the internet is fantastic you are fantastic. thank you so muck

  • @marramvelez

    You're very welcome!

  • Beautiful. What is easier? Acrylic, or oil? I'm just a new painter and started (like last week) and I think I like both...anyway, it doesn't matter.
