I think it's strange that there are quite important differences in basic highway code rules in different countries which can lead to dangerous situations if, say an englishman goes to mainland Europe or if I drive in the UK.
@nuramoboy Thats correct, a left or right blind spot is not essential in this situation, but it is important to check your right mirror. A glimpse over your right shoulder is not necessary but there would be no harm in doing so
I'm terrified of visiting GB and driving there. It seems such an elaborate process (better organized!) than here. There are plenty of people here (US) who think that if you're in a turning late marked with arrows, there's no need to indicate, and we've only just started seeing roundabouts (with nothing on them in driver's training). Add that to driving on the left and in a manual transmission car and I think I'd be better off taking taxis! Thoughts/encouragement, anyone?
@f4r33st It's actually very safe driving. The use of the handbrake displays lights on the back of the car, making it clear to following traffic that you have come to a complete stop. Also, by using the handbrake if you have come to a stop for more than 2 or 3 seconds, takes the pressure of the clutch and footbrake. If you were stopped on an uphill slope, you could wear out the clutch completely by holding it on the 'bite' so the handbrake is very useful there aswell.
if your waiting in the middle to turn right.. and the lights go on red while your in the middle what do you do? just wait untill there green again? then go when theres a gap in the traffic?
Once you have crossed the solid white line the red light refers to there's nothing wrong with finishing the turn. As soon as you see the oncoming traffic stopping you should go if its safe to do so. If you stay in the middle you might block traffic that has the green light
When turning onto a new road, what are you checking for?? The check mirrors procedure onto a new road is a silly idea to be quite honest. You are meant to focus on the road you have just turned on, not what somebody behind you is doing....
Quite silly, there could be a motorcyclist unaware that you're turning right overtaking you, or committed to the overtake before he knew you were going to turn, just bash him out of the way, rather than use your mirrors and stop. Or if you're turning left there could be a cyclist you're unaware of of, why not side swipe them as well, I'm sure they'll love it. I mean, why the hell should you check your mirrors before causing an accident by violating priority, which daft twat came up with that.
Thanks for the instructions it is useful especially for us europeans who are going to travel to Britain. I hope I will not kill myself driving on left :)
I wish you were my instuctor. I've got 3hrs of lessons before my test on monday and my confidence has dwindled in the last week. I only started my lessons at the start of august and was well on target to reach test standard in 20 hrs. But I'm making a few silly mistakes now and this is where I need my instructors support. He's snapping a lot even though the past 3 weeks I've been progessing "excellent" in his words. Well it's now when I need help, I'm getting pre test nerves and doubts. "Tuts"
This could also happen if you become decapitated while waiting. I wonder why the intersection with the separate right turn lane doesn't have a separate right turn arrow.
@F1X0R121 If you're hit hard, the hand brake is going to do as much good as your foot being off the pedal... Lots of people have leg injuries after crashes because they were holding the brake down so hard.
@OneSkiWonder clearly it isn't going to stop a 7.5 tonne lorry hitting you at 30mph. It will how ever help more is a slow impact as it can not be dislodged.
@F1X0R121 You don't need to use the hand brake. The hand brake is used for parking and for regaining control when you slip on ice or snow if you know what you're doing.
If you are right eye dominant as most people are, you might find driving on the left easier once you get used to it. Mind you, i9f you go to New Zealand it's ever weirder because of an unusual give way rule defined by whether one of the vehicles is turning or going straight. If you are going straight and an oncoming vehicle is turning right, you still have priority, but if you are turning left and they are turning right, then the oncoming vehicle gets to go first.
Highway Code Rule 150: Box junctions. These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road (see Other road markings section). You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right. At signalled roundabouts you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.
A signal should always be given if it would benefit other road users .Only the last two right turns have no signal as the lanes are clearly marked as right turn only. No one would really benefit from a signal if the lane only allows a right turn.
You don't indicate unless other road users will benefit from the signal. An unwarranted signal is a minor as I understand it. You can wait in a box, and if you aren't going to move off straight away its best practice to apply the handbrake and select neutral.
What's with all the handbreaking??

@erka001 What kind of dangers do you think could happen, due to differences in highway codes?

so when you turn right on the traffic right you do not need to check the blind spot? do you need to look left shoulder also?

@vandenrox You must not turn right, left or anywhere on a red light in the UK. As far as I know its only the USA where your allowed to turn on a red

@LE55ONS You can turn on a red in Canada too.

why do you secure the car with the handbrake when waiting to turn? i just use the pedal

If you get hit from behind, your foot could well slip.

Decapitated? as in, have your head chopped off? I Think you mean incapacitated. Looks like an innocent spell checker thing, but it did make me laugh.
