  • No one knows malicious man-hurt like Greg ... sigh

  • Alright, fine... Susan M. does not fire 'it' off in a tortured emotional fireball... but then again, the 90's are over - let's face and accept it. I must say though, she wields her skill and talent like an unchallenged gunfighter... absolutely mesmerizing how she controls and displays her musical talent both audibly and visually. I would love to be her guitarist, but I'm afraid I would keep forgetting my place while watching her.

  • Susan Marshall did a much better job with this song @ the show I saw. It was still "loungier" than the original but had considerable more bite to it.

  • one hot bitch.

  • horrible version compared to Marcy...so wrong!..reminds me of people who oversing a National Anthem...

  • Just as good as Marcy's version imo, different but it works. Thanks for posting this little gem.

  • disappointed that she's doing some american idol version-nothing like the soulful version RECORDED -who on earth is she playing to? It's like hearing the score from Guys and dolls when you want to hear Delibes.

  • I saw that show. We were no more than 750-1000. Can't take that show out of my mind. Unbeleivable. you had to be there

  • I agree. She doesn't give the right vibe at all. The Marcy Mays version from the Reading Festival blows this away.

  • Don't like it. The problem with Susan's performance is that she is using the song as a showpiece for herself (notice the gesturing and the added vocal trills.) There's no doubt that the woman can sing, but at the same time, she doesn't appear to be feeling the content of the song at all. All technique and no soul.

Marcy's version was a simple, straight-forward rendering of the song itself. No pretensions. Her voice subjugated itself to the message of the song, and thus made it more powerful.

  • Susan, you is perfect baby!!!

  • this is horrible

  • Decent cover version but not as good as the real thing.

  • i agree. you cant mess with the original. if he couldn't get Marcy then Greg should have sung it himself.

  • a little lounge singer vegas act for me...just saying.

  • For me "gentlemen" was the best rock album of the '90. An edge on the music, on the grunge. A stone..

I remember few albums so epic.

  • @ameis72 Right up there with Nevermind and August and Everything After. Just my two bits.

  • not even close to marcy mays- sorry

  • Wait a minute. Susan is an awesome singer. I don't think Greg would let her anywhere near the stage to perform if she couldn't pull this off. It's just different that's all. How many do we know that can sing and hit every note like this? Take it up with Greg the next time you see him.

  • I agree. I can't imagine anyone topping Marcy singing this, but have you ever known Dulli/Whigs to not put quality up on stage & knock shit out every night? NEVER.

I'll take the Whigs any day & appreciate Susan too...

  • Thanks for your reply. I actually prefer Marcy's version, but I have seen both Marcy and Susan sing this live. (more than once) Yes, quality everytime.

  • It's the Kenny G version of My Curse.

  • this version is terrible. Woman listen to what your singing instead of trying to think of how to move yr hands and body to every note in the song. Marcy blows this away.

  • yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • Fierce, and fearfully great. Susan blows me away..... I saw her sing this in concert, and could never forget it. It is a haunting song, and she is the perfect artist to haunt your dreams with this fiery, sexy tribute. Unforgettable in all the best ways.

  • the 90s fuckin rock

  • My God, this song reminds son much... Just discovered this version, have seen it 7 times and can't stop doing so... Marcy has her place, I think she gets the roughness best, but this woman goes further... maybe it's just I'm hipnotized now...I agree, what an ending! Simply beautiful, doesn't get better than this, sexiest thing ever...

  • Wow--she really brings it from around 3:40 on and what an ending.

  • oh mio dio

  • Glad you posted it as I love Afghan Whigs. However, thank god Macy Mays did the original cover of this old Afghan Whigs song! Her voice and tone match the emotion of the song much better. Gentleman has got to be the best break up album ever! Almost makes you miss the agony of heartbreak. =(

  • @Suckerpunchu Macy's wasn't a cover, it was an Afghan Whigs song. She was originally going to do a duet with Dulli but after he heard her, he had just her sing it.

  • @zona999, for me a cover is when someone sings a song that was originally recorded by another artist. Since Macy sang that song after Greg had originally recorded it in 1989, I call her version (my favorite) a cover. BTW I just got to spend "An Evening with Greg Dulli" in Nashville. It was an AWESOME show. The void The Afghan Whigs left has yet to be filled. =(

  • thank you for posting. one of my favorite Afghan Wigs songs. great version.

  • Hot, smouldering, sensual...MEZmerizing. What an incredible talent.

  • i do not fear you. and slave i only use as a word to describe the special way i feel when i'm with you. but if i have to lie about it...

  • One of my favorite songs. Thanks so much for posting. :D:D:D
