David shire (composer) talked about how he based all the music on things Dorothy might have heard. She is making it up after all....Sort of......This being a good example of American music at the time. I thoght that was a wonderful idea, in that way he is conveying plot with the music wonderfully.
Agreed--like a combo of Joplin rag and Sousa march. Basing the Emerald City on the 1901 Pan-American Exposition was a lovely touch as well. Really nailed it.
A very astute comment. The sets and costumes in the film coincide with the music very nicely, matching the rich atmosphere of the Art Nouveau-styled, Pan-American Exposition of 1901, the same time period in which the story of Return to Oz is set.
