Man this is a beautiful film, of a beautiful time.
Now I have to go. I need to have another argument with God about why He had me being born in 1967 instead of 1947 so I could have been a young man in the Haight. >:(
This song reminds me of my Hippie Aunt Jude. She lived in a TeePee for about 7 years. She died in 94' still miss her. I learned a lot of good values from her.
Sometime in July of '67, we noticed ugly things going down and it wasn't getting better in "the city". Many heads went north to Marin County: Sausolito houseboat community; Mill Valley; San Anselmo, Fairfax; Forest Knolls; Lagunitas; Bolinas; Nicasio; the Inkwells and the Spillway. White Lightning, Blue Cheer, Red Owsley, and later, Orange Sunshine, Yellow Sunshine, Purple Sunshine, Purple Microdot, Blue Doubledome, Orange Barrels flowed freely along with Pink Mescaline and Chocolate Mescaline.
Wish I could have seen it in 66 before the crap moved in...I did get to see about the same thing when it kinda moved to Atlanta Georgia in 1969,but sure it couldn't compare to San..Fran..same thing took the Atl. scene down as the Height/Ashbury...bikers,mob,heroin.run away kids...
Wow, I had forgotten how crowded and full of tourists the Haight had become by '67. Obviously the meth freaks had already started moving in ... yikes. Love the raw footage. Thanks for posting. Great seeing the old neighborhood. Was here '64-'69 ... it was much better before everyone heard about it. Fun reading the posts here and catching up a little. Peace Love Y'all ...
@inforapint if you dont like this stuff then why did you search it on youtube, just so you could spread negativity? i dont understand people like you...
I guess this is the most "realistic" 1967 I have seen. And makes me think that it is not much to long for. Even though it may be a hundred, or a thousand, times better than 2011.
Great video!!! I am a young hippie, and I was raised very near the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets. It's great to see these old videos of my hometown before I was born. Haight-Ashbury is still very cool, but it's too expensive...sort of gentrified....so some of the spirit is lost. It's still awesome nevertheless.
when i took my vacation back in time, i tried to warn these hippies about the pending disco era of the late 1970's and the reagan administration of the 1980's, as well as nixon, the AIDS epidemic, crack, 9/11, and rap music. but they didn't listen to me because they were all stoned, and plus they all laughed at me because i was trying to use my iphone in 1967 - in which the reception in '67 sf was terrible. i need to let verizon know about that issue.
@wannawatchu66 This film actually documents the beginning of the end of the "love." The nation had heard and invaded a peaceful little community with gawking tourists, cameras, tour buses and traffic. Some of the locals resented it more than others. Some of us, moved further out. The new people , including the hard druggies, came to turn a profit ... the climate was changing ... sad ....
@myshilohranch Oh, OK...interesting perspective. I guess if I were a resident at the time, I too, would probably be resentful to some degree. Thanks for your insight.
@myshilohranch You, too, are most welcome. In fact, I'm *always* interested in hearing what those such as yourself Who Were Actually There At The Time have to say about life in the Haight. After all, in my eyes, that makes you an authority on the subject, and as such, I'm grateful for your willingness to share and educate those like me. Have a terrific one, buddy! :o)
I should also add that I wear my hair as a high fade from the late 80's/early 90's while others have dreads or bald fades and I'm an Oakland Raiders fan living in West PA among these cocky idiot Steeler fan. Lets face it, I'm a hippie. just kidding
correct me if I'm wrong, but in 2011 kids around my age group have formed convention. They ALL smoke weed, drink, and have sex. I'm 19 and am the minority in which I refuse to do any of those. I don't crave alcohol or weed so I don't do it. I'll wait til marriage for ramming that pussy. Today's convention is the corruption of the late 60's. In a way I'm kind of rebelling cuz I don't try to fit in by doing any of the above. Weird how times have changed isn't it.
@Summerslam96 hey buddy your doing the perfect thing and stay that way,any fool can get stupid,in fact thats what a fool does best,i grew up in the 60s and 70s but it was a different time with different thinking and ways,on this vid you heard the guy?he said he hardly ever heard anybody even swear, now punks talk like they got shit in there filthy cake holes ,even you said ramming that pussy,we would have never even thought, today has shit to do with the 60s,its screwed all by itself,oh and peace!

1967 I was there...wonder how many of them are still alive, like the guy at 3:07, and the woman with the little baby in her arms. Hope they made it. Who is is gonna make it? We'll find out in the long run )
lol ok that was weird , im very weird people are scared of me because of my apearence and act at school , somone was frowning at me all becuase i ahd long hair and a flower in my hair.
any way its great to hear you were there , ha if i sor a camera filming me in 1967 i would run up to it and pull crazy faces in frongt of it and wave peace signs about.
@harryfaquad Yeah that video is freaky to watch 44 years later. Picture quality is about as vivid as the Haight I'm familiar with recenly, except the cars looked different and no iPods or chain stores. Hope the lady made it. Since I was born in Feb 67', about the same age as her baby.
Look closely at this film, which could be the basis for a sociology esaay comparing 1967 with 2011. The biggest difference is: The absence of all the digital mobile devices that folks are obsessed with now. The people in this film can see, hear, & feel their surroundings. Great clip, but why "Hey Jude"? A British song from 1968 doesn't really fit. Why not Moby Grape instead?
