@wgh999 I don't understand; you're not explaining what you mean. Do you mean that "Anything other than 'yes' means 'no'" when a senior is communicating to a junior and not when a junior is trying to communicate something to a senior? If that's what you're talking about, your previous comments made little sense.
Actually these are merely simple differences in the tendency of communication. In a conversation, if you don't say anything about a comment, it doesn't necessarily mean you agree/disagree with it. However, in American culture (but not European cultures) it is normally expected that you speak out or do something about it if you disagree, because of the smaller power differences in between people in America. In most countries that used to have a king, openly voicing disagreeement = death.
These are very good little videos that have helped me in my relationship with my Chinese wife. Sometimes she seems to be completely irrational until I find out months later that shes just being what she is Chinese. She gives out hints that Im completely unaware of and then, when I dont pick up on the, seems to do something completely crazy. But shes not doing anything crazy at all in her culture. Does anyone out there know where I can find more about these things on a personal level?
@wapenshaw I have the same issue with my husband. Thing is being chinese (and having grown up in Canada) I though I was pretty westernized, but even then, my husband and I don't see eye to eye, and we do find a lot of communication problems.
"chen" will always make sure no is the final answer. maybe the ears of white are blocked with their ignorance so they cant hear it. explaining why an idea is bad is a way of giving a fair reason of rejection. they do this so that people wont get a heart attact cause the fat american country cant get pissed without having affect to their heart problems. after the reasons, no is still said at the end so clear the ignorance and mayo in your hears and listen up.
Also, when I say sorry to Chinese people, they seldom forgive me, unlike Chinese people. They( Chinese ) usually will score me even after I say sorry to them, unlike westerners. Also, when I complete their ( Chinese) task, they seldom say thank you and satisfied.
I think it is because most westeners are influenced by Christianity culture but Chinese are not. That's the difference between westerners and Chinese.
People in Hong Kong don't represent all the Chinese, same as the people in Brooklyn don't represent all the Americans. If you were a real Chinese you should have known this already.
I am Chinese, in my experience of dealing with westerners and Chinese people. It is easier to deal with westerners. It is because westerners usually say thank you when you help them or complete their task. Also, westerners will usually say sorry if they do something wrong to other person.
But Chinese are tatally opposite, it is because even when the do something wrong to other person, they seldom say sorry to other person.
According to my experience, when I talk to westerners, when they talk to me, I understand what they are saying. When they told me to do something to them, I'll do it to them. When I complete the mission, westerners will usually satisfied because I have already complete my mission to them. And they will say thank you if you do something good to them ,Chinese people are totally opposite.
Chinese are always implicit: don't speak things out. You should understand the rules, the etiquette alone. How about humiliation as part of education in China? I thought chinese use humiliation a lot to teach: employees, children....
xiaoxiao19 ur an on9, stop bragging bout how much u know bout chinese culture, looking at ur replies, all i see is ignorant generalizations , my ass saying no directly is impolite in chinese culture....
btw im from hk 2, no hkers will use hanyu pinyin in their name, so gg trying to front.
In Chinese culture, you have power to say no to the people who is younger than you, lower status but no older people or higer status.I think it is because in the past, the emperor ruled china for a very long time.
In my essay Communication in Chinese Offices (find on my website) you can read Chinese and Western Rules of Communication. I realize I need to add another set of Rules for Chinese: Rules of how higher status talk to lower status.
in chinese culture, people only say no to their children or their employee, and say no to the people who is much younger than them. But they would never say no to their parents, boss, manager or people who is older than them.
In chinese culture, saying no direct is impolite, unlike western culture. That's why I like western culture more than Chinese culture. anyway, I am Hong Konger.
No matter what a Chinese or Japanese man replied as a No or Yes, (mostly don't say yes means no.),but even they say yes could means they know what is your opinion, but not they agreed already. You need to feel it for more sure. But you can be used to it soon how to feel or guess rightly the Chinese or Japanese Way.
Actually, chinese or japanese ways are more indirect, even contrary to what they are saying. The more sure method is to understand, especially by "feeling it" not listening to the words only, just like what you said in another video.
I(chinese) understand what you are talking about. To me, I like western way of talking more than Chinese way.Because western people are more simple mind than oriential people.I am a simple mind person.
Asian parent: do u like this shirt?
Asian kid: well it's not the best shirt I've seen and there's prob better ones out there
Asian parent: I SAID DO U LIKE IT OR NOT?
Asian kid: like I said I'm sure we could make an exception to bring it back and get one suitable for me
Asian parent: THAT'S IT GO TO UR ROOM FOR NOT ANSWERING ME!!!

Employee: I have an even safer idea, how about we get someone even heavier so that we can really stress-test the harness.
