  • A yamaha DX7 MK2 will blow a prophet 5 out of the water anyday. Too much hype of these old analogue synths they are seriously limited and unreliable.

  • does thom yorke use one of these?

  • motherf'er I love 1:08. I wish I could find this somewhere but I bet it's far expensive. This was the synthesizer used in Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas time" song.

  • really excellent playing and demo

  • This and the Jupiter 8 are easily the best synthesizers ever.

  • @UnchainTheNight1 i can't decide if i like the jupiter, prophet, or polysix best.... im leaning towards the polysix cause oddly enough with enough effects i thought i heard my legacy polysix making phatter sounds than my friends prophet 5 xD

  • 4:49 preset extensively used by Gary Numan, on "Slow Car to China" "Music For Chameleons" etc.....

  • can you test the ketron x4?thank you very much

  • This Prophet-5 is REV 1, REv 2 or REV 3???? somebody knows?

  • Wow - how many times have I heard that tuning ocillator effect and it was just the turn of a knob. Sounds more complicated than it really is.

  • The accordian sound at 1:57 is awesome. It sounds so much like an accordian!

  • who knew that the prophet 5 was a rompler?!

  • haha dude ur epic

  • Great sound!

  • are these sounds made by analog engine or these sounds are extra sounds

  • @lukuntri

All analog, 5-voice with two oscillators per voice and a 24db/octave VCF with resonance. It has a 6502 processor, and all functions can be controlled by software- it was the first synthesizer to do this.

  • @ SynthManiaDotCom

How does this stack up against a Jupiter 6?

  • this is prophet ......not a farfisa....

  • Nice demo! The patch at 7:07 is very reminiscent of the intro of "It Keeps You Running" by the Doobie Brothers.

  • does anyone know how i can upgrade my rev 3.0 to a rev 3.2/3.3 ? winecountry have nothing about this on there site, however i have heard of people doing this upgrade. Please help someone

  • Also, this is a fantastic demo, by the way. I'm very impressed.

  • I fucking love the sound of this. I really really want to use it to make electronic drum noises.

  • A bit wheezy sounding :/

  • 1:08 WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

  • how much to buy this synth

  • great demo. now I know what synth made the Sync II sound

  • I know this is widely considered a legendary synthesizer, but it sounds a bit too harsh for my tastes. Out of that demonstration, I heard maybe one or two sounds that were just alright. No offense to the author - great, helpful demo! I think I'm more of a Roland Jupiter fan, myself.

  • The Prophet 5 was used on Madonna's disc 'Like a Virgin', along with a Synclavier. Do you know what parts are the Prophet 5 on the song Material Girl? I've always wondered which were the Prophet and which were the Synclavier...

  • hi, im intrested in purchasing a few vintage synths for my next ablum, how would one be able to learn to play a "vintage" synth?

  • Someone want to lend me 4000 dollars?

  • I bought one in 1992 for $500!!! It had some issues w/ every third note failing, and this problem would shift around a bit so if a note failed to play once, it might start working again but then the 3rd note from that one would fail as well.... I should have had it serviced but... Sold for what I paid for it 3 years later... ughhh what a mistake that was. It's a gorgeous synth and the virtual is nice but NOTHING like the original...

  • Very nice. Didn't Genesis use a Prophet 5 in the 80's?

  • @TMF58 Tony Banks used a Prophet 10.

  • @Coowallsky he also used a Synclavier - expensive!

  • Now I know how the music for Super Mario Brothers was made. This video literally had me 2 seconds from tears!!! *Looks for Super Nintendo* 5 stars vid coming from bass player ^__^

  • Perfect synth for a funeral.

  • in the early 80's i was a big duran duran fan. i even bought a cheap mono synth cuz i wanted to play like nick rhodes. i read that he used aprophet 5 on the first album, including for friends of mine. one day i was in a shop that had one. i fooled around a bit and actually figured out how to make the helicopter sound at the start of friends of mine. at the time i was 16 and it was so cool to make a sound from a song by my favorite band using the exact instrument they did.

  • Please more #1 prg. demo.

  • 私もレコーディングに使用しています。

  • Does anyone know what this song is? 6:09 - 6:45

  • The charm of the Prophet-5 is not that it sounds like any of the instruments it's supposedly emulating (it doesn't) but that, no matter what you make it do, it sounds like an analog synth. My secondhand Yamaha digital keyboard does a much better job of sounding like the actual instruments, but it doesn't sound nearly as warm and cuddly as this thing. Fond memories of Joe Zawinul on those 70s Weather Report albums.

  • 4:50 descending bells preset was used extensively by Gary Numan......nice demo thanks

  • I had the prophet 5 too and Oberheim Ob8... Is it you who brought them ? .-)

This prophet is the most "acoustic" sounding synth I had..

  • I have the software version of this and I recognise some of these sounds.

It is a truely remarkable synth :)

  • I hate you you have a real hardware one lol ;) lot envious of you. Was very ahead of its time this.

  • GREAT DEMO. Take great care in selecting a tech. There are some that are just not there if you get my drift.

  • Great demo, show much more than the usual filter sweeping bass mania in most demos.

  • Anyone know why it had only 5 voices? Why not 6 or 8?

  • @Microsloth

price.. it was one of the first poly synth.

  • @malteberg they also made a prophet 10 rev 1, which was basically twice the voices in one normal prophet box. They stopped making them because there was too much heat inside the unit. they later made a dual manual prophet 10 which didn't have any of the heat problems.

  • @Microsloth it actually had 10 originally, in the same chassis as the prophet 5, but it was very unreliable and it overheated constantly, they removed the other board and it became the prophet 5...they later made a prophet 10 again, but it was gigantic and had 2 keyboards..some of the original prophet 5 rev1's actually started life as prophet 10s and were downgraded to 5 for stability. The prophet T8 had 8 voices for whatever it's worth...I think one of the original prophet 10's is in a museum

  • i have a prophet 5 and id never ever sell it. id be a hobo and carry it around if i had to, its just too awesome.

  • Wally Badarou's Echoes album has the best prophet 5 sounds I've ever heard...you want horns...listen to "Waltz" around 3:03. Gorgeous. So on this...it seems you just need some reverb and great compression, etc., to bring out the fullest sound. I suppose some big speakers....

  • I think alot of people like this HQ vid of the prophet 5 but it's only on my left speaker...

    Please fix and reup !!

    Subscribed .. n 5 stars anyway! :)

  • Same here - left channel only. Not to worry, very cool synth, well played...

  • @Mankemacho its hard panned but there is stuff on both channels

  • @Mankemacho its louder in the left but its in both

  • @sacredgeometry I think there's only reverb in the right channel.

  • @Mankemacho its in mono!

  • you have really pretty hands - very graceful movements pushing the buttons and then dragging your finger across the wood on its way back to the keyboard for more of your unmistakable stylings.

  • Sale it to me !

  • omg 1:08 i came

  • winwood used the dual manual prophet 10

and a multimoog for the sine lead patch in while you see a chance /valerie

  • beats an oberheim anytime , so much more flexible, far faster envs , far better resolution pots

and panel hardware , great choir patch by the way

  • Hmm i think that you can make that Jarre's laser harp sound on this synth en it would sound very similiar.

  • It's Elka Synthex preset sound :)

  • Made by Paul Wiffen :D

  • thanks for the fun demo!

  • i saw the keyboardist in the "99 luft balloons" video playing this. what a beautiful synth it is..

  • I love this synth.I used to have a Rev 2.0 great sounds. A very long sweep, warm pads, fat strings and bass+ clangy metallics, but it drifted like hell !!! OK. Songs in which this synth was used (I think?) 19 By paul Hardcastle (reverse bells). Your the one for me D-Train (Reverse bells+ lead line). The smurf by Tyrone Brunson (Leadline+ synth sweep). Too shy by kajagoogoo (pads)? World machine by Level 42 (Fat Bassline). Ghosts by Japan. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Sorry for going on : D

  • I'm not positive but i think the Descending Bells sound was used in the beginning of the theme for Halloween III Season of The Witch. Could anyone else back me up on this?

  • @movieman95 . Could have been. John Carpenter and Alan Howarth used this synth and the P10 almost exclusively on this soundtrack. But some of the sharp sounds you might be thinking of could have been from the use of the ARP Avatar that they also used. It was a guitar synth that pretty much failed and from what I remember helped put the first nail in ARPs coffin.

  • I love the "Let's Go" part from the Cars. That song is what made me interested in this instrument.

  • i was told this synth was used for the hook line on YAZOO-DON'T GO... can you have a crack at making it

  • The synth used in Don't go, was a SCi Pro one, the Prophet's little monophonic brother.

  • Hey man. Love the demos of this and other synths. And the music that plays before the video starts. Catchy! What effect do you have on the synths? I noticed it on this and your OB-Xa. What unit does it come from?

  • Thank you - I believe I used a Roland SRV-3030d effect processor for light reverb on both videos

  • @unimaxer look the tb 303 up if you dont already know it. i think it is that sound you are going after ;)

  • Hey pretty good demo..much better than the old brouchure, soundsheet that SCi used to send out..

.hava listen to my harpsichord,,,they dont all sound alike.

  • ha...the prophet 5...my favorite synth of the 80's...you play realy well, nice programing.

  • yes, the Prophet 10!

  • Hello, great demo :) , I've posted it on my blog switchedonsynthesizer.blogspot . com .

  • You are absolutely fantastic!
