motherf'er I love 1:08. I wish I could find this somewhere but I bet it's far expensive. This was the synthesizer used in Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas time" song.
@UnchainTheNight1 i can't decide if i like the jupiter, prophet, or polysix best.... im leaning towards the polysix cause oddly enough with enough effects i thought i heard my legacy polysix making phatter sounds than my friends prophet 5 xD
All analog, 5-voice with two oscillators per voice and a 24db/octave VCF with resonance. It has a 6502 processor, and all functions can be controlled by software- it was the first synthesizer to do this.
does anyone know how i can upgrade my rev 3.0 to a rev 3.2/3.3 ? winecountry have nothing about this on there site, however i have heard of people doing this upgrade. Please help someone
I know this is widely considered a legendary synthesizer, but it sounds a bit too harsh for my tastes. Out of that demonstration, I heard maybe one or two sounds that were just alright. No offense to the author - great, helpful demo! I think I'm more of a Roland Jupiter fan, myself.
The Prophet 5 was used on Madonna's disc 'Like a Virgin', along with a Synclavier. Do you know what parts are the Prophet 5 on the song Material Girl? I've always wondered which were the Prophet and which were the Synclavier...
I bought one in 1992 for $500!!! It had some issues w/ every third note failing, and this problem would shift around a bit so if a note failed to play once, it might start working again but then the 3rd note from that one would fail as well.... I should have had it serviced but... Sold for what I paid for it 3 years later... ughhh what a mistake that was. It's a gorgeous synth and the virtual is nice but NOTHING like the original...
Now I know how the music for Super Mario Brothers was made. This video literally had me 2 seconds from tears!!! *Looks for Super Nintendo* 5 stars vid coming from bass player ^__^
in the early 80's i was a big duran duran fan. i even bought a cheap mono synth cuz i wanted to play like nick rhodes. i read that he used aprophet 5 on the first album, including for friends of mine. one day i was in a shop that had one. i fooled around a bit and actually figured out how to make the helicopter sound at the start of friends of mine. at the time i was 16 and it was so cool to make a sound from a song by my favorite band using the exact instrument they did.
The charm of the Prophet-5 is not that it sounds like any of the instruments it's supposedly emulating (it doesn't) but that, no matter what you make it do, it sounds like an analog synth. My secondhand Yamaha digital keyboard does a much better job of sounding like the actual instruments, but it doesn't sound nearly as warm and cuddly as this thing. Fond memories of Joe Zawinul on those 70s Weather Report albums.
@malteberg they also made a prophet 10 rev 1, which was basically twice the voices in one normal prophet box. They stopped making them because there was too much heat inside the unit. they later made a dual manual prophet 10 which didn't have any of the heat problems.
@Microsloth it actually had 10 originally, in the same chassis as the prophet 5, but it was very unreliable and it overheated constantly, they removed the other board and it became the prophet 5...they later made a prophet 10 again, but it was gigantic and had 2 keyboards..some of the original prophet 5 rev1's actually started life as prophet 10s and were downgraded to 5 for stability. The prophet T8 had 8 voices for whatever it's worth...I think one of the original prophet 10's is in a museum
what a fantastic synth. I'm thinking of buying the prophet 08 PE edition, can't afford the Prophet 5 :-) . It's different but you recognize PE 05 stuff in it
Wally Badarou's Echoes album has the best prophet 5 sounds I've ever heard...you want horns...listen to "Waltz" around 3:03. Gorgeous. So on this...it seems you just need some reverb and great compression, etc., to bring out the fullest sound. I suppose some big speakers....
you have really pretty hands - very graceful movements pushing the buttons and then dragging your finger across the wood on its way back to the keyboard for more of your unmistakable stylings.
I love this synth.I used to have a Rev 2.0 great sounds. A very long sweep, warm pads, fat strings and bass+ clangy metallics, but it drifted like hell !!! OK. Songs in which this synth was used (I think?) 19 By paul Hardcastle (reverse bells). Your the one for me D-Train (Reverse bells+ lead line). The smurf by Tyrone Brunson (Leadline+ synth sweep). Too shy by kajagoogoo (pads)? World machine by Level 42 (Fat Bassline). Ghosts by Japan. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Sorry for going on : D
I'm not positive but i think the Descending Bells sound was used in the beginning of the theme for Halloween III Season of The Witch. Could anyone else back me up on this?
@movieman95 . Could have been. John Carpenter and Alan Howarth used this synth and the P10 almost exclusively on this soundtrack. But some of the sharp sounds you might be thinking of could have been from the use of the ARP Avatar that they also used. It was a guitar synth that pretty much failed and from what I remember helped put the first nail in ARPs coffin.
Hey man. Love the demos of this and other synths. And the music that plays before the video starts. Catchy! What effect do you have on the synths? I noticed it on this and your OB-Xa. What unit does it come from?
A yamaha DX7 MK2 will blow a prophet 5 out of the water anyday. Too much hype of these old analogue synths they are seriously limited and unreliable.
