Bah Sheba cut an album back in the 60's and I thought it was fantastic until P.F. came along. I believe if one relates solely to the passion of the sounds one begins to understand that life is all about polyphonics and not words. Words are only indicators and not necessarily the destination. Power, frustration, elation, disappointment, rejection, abandonment, sadness, powerlessness, loneliness and hopefully oneness. Clarity is free but only if I am willing to spot the interference.
I guess I was 3 when this song came out, 40 now. Floyd songs will be popular for many, many years. They may fade in and out, but for the connoisseur of music, they are timeless. They with Zeppelin, the Stones, .... will be popular for many generations. Thanks guys!
i was 22 when this came out ...im 63 and still love it as much as the first time .. lived in edzell , scotland .... the time of my life .... love and peace
@gsunde I'm 22 and I have been listening to this song ever since I couldn't interpret it from my folks and even more so once I could interpret the meaning behind it. Pink Floyd will forever be in my family as I'm sure It will be in yours :)
i always wonder why PF has been waiting decades befores giving some £ credits to the female singer on the Album version. she gave so much to the song. and they made so much money back then. makes me wonder why? (other than jucicial slow process and the PF break-up reasons)
well said jhutch !! great programme on Radio 2 last night about the album being made etc, repeated on 6music if ppl missed it friday 7th 9pm.... no I dont work for them !! LOL
@wbbwtfo ...some people should not even have the gift of hearing....to expierience this masterpiece.Every time this song is put up,many people wish to have it as their death-song........this piece touched me as a teenager in 1973 when 'Dark side of the moon' was brand new to the radio/record charts....and it does so even more today. It is a classic tune on a classic album..........shreiking???!!!!
@tonythetigerII TOTALLY agree with that -- that is indeed Roy Harper at the mic...so it almost certainly means something like Have a Cigar from Wish You Were Here
They generally used three singers when performing this song. They's take turns as they tended to wear themselves out. The last time I heard a woman cry like this was the last time I made love to my ex-wife. "Three minutes!" she screamed. "Ahggg!" she cried! "I just can't take it anymore!" "Zzzzz . . . " I responded. "Eeeew!" she withered away in agony. I was just a typical man back then. Still am. I deserved to be dragged out on the couch & left for heavy garbage. Now I sing the blues!
Pink Floyd keyboard player Rick Wright wrote this song, which is about life, gradually descending into death. Hence the angrier and more intense first half with a dying person refusing to "go gently into that good night."The second half is gentler, as the dying person gives into the inevitable and fades away.
@OPTIMIZEDd Actually, Rick wrote this song just as Dorothy was returning to her house tryinig to beat out a tornado. Tragically, her family was already huddled down in the shelter so she couldn't get inside. This song is about the sad events that followed as she was "Swooshed!" up over the rainbow. Play the song and you will hear her screaming as her little dog Totto barks. Those little brave dogs always bring a tear to my eye. The little rascal steals weanies to. Ouch! cried the witch.
@jamieg1tube Consider that the two albums before and after this one were songs written for movies. I think the process is an excellent way to add an element of spontaneity. When things get stale and one is looking for a way to ramp up the songs to a whole other level, match what you have, both the lyrics and the rythem to a movie. I think this could have been done by Rick without the other members knowing about it. Both of the masterpieces do match up uniquely with too many coincidences.
@MisterNifty They do kind of match up. I watched it with DSOTM years ago, and it's cool as hell. However, I've seen interviews where members of PF deny any connection whatsoever. And you represent this in your comment, as a statement of fact, when in reality, it's not fact, but merely a cool coincidence. I'm being nice here in my choice of words. However, when you present this as a statement of fact, you are misleading people, in my view, to make it seem like you know what you are talking about.
@jamieg1tube I didn't say that they admitted to it. I'm saying that Roger Waters had plans on matching it up and didn't tell them. He is just playing with them by not admitting to it and they know it. See, the album before this one and the one after it were also done to movies. I think they did one called "More" and another one that was called "obscured by clouds." They knew how to do this stuff. I have no doubt its what they did. Roger is only going to admit to it on his death bed
@jamieg1tube Half of the album matches up perfectly with the black and white portion of the movie. The other half of the album starts exactly when the colored portion of the movie begins. The light going into the pyrimid on the album cover is black and white while that coming out of it is colored. This is the creative genius of Roger Waters. This really demonstrates who was in charge in the making of this album. So, back off! I do know what I'm talking about here.
@MisterNifty Yea, but you can't get away from the FACT, that you tried stating your BELIEF! as if it were a FACT!, which it is not. The FACT is, ALL members of the band say your belief is wrong. Don't get mad @ me because PINK FLOYD denies your delusion. You tried to bullshit somebody, and got called on it here in front of everyone. That's what you are mad about, I suspect.
@jamieg1tube You know, I don't take drugs. I'm not trying to imply that you do and I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the endeavor as whatever floats your boat is hay in the barn and water under the bridge. Hey, quit acting like a suzy as I just like this song. Why are you getting all pissy on me? I'm cool. Indeed, I one sat around with others passing around a joint pretending to be a wise indian (Native American). Like I said, just back off! I am an authority figure!
@MisterNifty And furthermore, you start out saying that Rick was the mastermind behind the Floyd/Oz delusion. And now it's Roger. Please don't make me own you anymore on here. P.S. I tried to be nice @ first.
@czwultraviolent4119 if you don't mind me asking... what is the second song?? if it is as powerful and as emotional as the great gig in the sky it is only fair to share to people with similar taste in music :-)
without a doubt it is a fretted bass, on the slide at 0:44 you can clearly hear the notes get higher incrementally, not a continuous smooth shift in pitch like a slide on a fretless.
i had that bootleg on red vinyl, with a yellow cover and a split head cartoon!! it had a great version of "any colour you like" -- but this just sounds like a girl being raped and crying for help!!! where is clare torry??
Yea apparently she was very embarrassed aswell when she sang it.... sued them in 2001 because the only money she got was that £30, no royalties.
david guilmour was asked in a interview if he ever thinks shut up woman when listening to this song and he said yes, which was obviously about the sueing.
I was leafing through a book once about the recording of the album. Clare Torry, the original singer on this, had no idea who Pink Floyd was, did the vocals for very little money, and thought she sucked. The band members were left in awe.
I agree with eep2madness. You can absolutely hear the picking. Furthermore, Roger is partially tone deaf. I can't imagine that playing a fretless anything would be easy for someone with tone deafness. He had to have Wright tune his bass.
To quote David Gilmour: "Rog couldn't play a fretless bass to save his life". In fact, it is Dave who plays fretless bass on Echoes off the Meddle album for example. And he also played bass on several other songs on their studio albums as well.

That's not a fretless bass, that is clearly slide guitar... You can hear Roger PICKING his bass when the girls start to sing, and that bass, I'm sorry to say, is frettED. After 9 years of playing bass, I know that's not a fretless.
@eep2madness If you can hear him picking or not, that doesn't make it fretless. Picking is what you do with your right hand (if you're right handed). Now if you meant you can hear the frets as he slides, then yes, that's correct.
To me, it sounds fretless, but I don't want to get into an argument about that. I'm just saying that picking is different from listening to the frets.
Great stuff! Man it doesn't get much better than this. And the great female vocal is none other than Venetta Fields! Often imitated - never bettered! Legend!
