  • @defdeelr don't forget the Clash.

  • Great song.

  • The Police should have been opening for them !

  • @roddy76to86: the police arent even worthy enough to carry their guitar and jock straps.

  • @madamgmail

Well, absolutely ! But I remember a Channel 4 (UK) documentary that I've still got on VHS somewhere, and obviously am now going to have to try and hunt down. Where the Editor of one of the incredible amount of "fanzines" that were on the go over here at the time was saying something like "Bloody hell, the Police came out of punk: I mean, what have we done ?" I'll be posting it on if it still exists on YouTube. "Walking on the ** moon" or even worse, "message in a f*cking bottle...

  • Check out the young Sara Lee KILLING it on the bass! Most people just know her from the B-52's Love Shack video, but she was the dance punk queen of the bottom end for over a decade before that.

  • Eddie Reader on backing vox and supplementary snare drum!

  • "I need on order"! Fucking classic.

  • Police Headlined , U2 main support Gang of 4 completed astonishing live line up.

  • i ACTUALLY WENT TO THIS GIG, HITCH HIKING UP FROM sOUTH wALES WHERE i LIVED AT THE TIME.....I THINK THAT EVEN THOUGH I AM STILL RIGHT INTO MUCH CONTEMPORARY MUSIC TODAY , MY 15 TO 21 YEARS WERE MUSICALLY THE BEST....PISTOLS CLASH EARLY U2[FIRST EVER MAINLAND SHOW] JAM TOURS JD LIVE WHEN IC WAS STILL THERE, SEFTON PARK AND ALBERT HALL BUNNEYMEN...I COULD GO ON AND ON...[SPECIAL MENTION TO BELFASTS FINEST SLF BY THE WAY...LAST CD BOUGHT WAS R1 LIVE LOUNGE 5 AND CASH MONEY MODAYS IN KINGSTON JA...

  • Is the Eddie Reader on the snare and singing??

  • This was opening for the Police? Should have been the other way around. Don't get me wrong, love the Police, but this is by far deeper/clever on many levels. jmo

  • Anyone know if these guys were really dating the chicks from & sharing instruments with Delta 5?

Must have been a crazy scene in Leeds.

  • I can't believe someone mentioned Delta5. I saw them at Hurrah's in NYC. Saw GOF on New Years eve there also. Those were good days.

I can't tell you if they were dating or not. Sorry. :(

  • Love that bass and the snap of the snare drum.

  • Mark radcliffe reckons it wasn't a big hit cos of the Falklands conflict...

  • This band is just incredible. Without a doubt, my favorite band. They got everything just right. This is also the best version of this song I've heard; the studio version is too slow and buttoned down.

  • i was going to say something about that but you beat me to the punch it;s too refined it doesnt have the edge and the sarcasm doesnt come out enough in the studio recording...

  • great video

  • People will fuckin mark down someone's comments just for breathing or farting the wrong way. It's like they just sit there hunting around trying to find comments to thumb down. LOL

  • i gave u a thumbs up lol

  • And I've also removed every other comment I've put down, cuz every damn one of em offended someone to where they marked it down. So they win, and I give up. :)

  • First response from (originally Eddi Reader !) tells you from his 'I had to be strong for my woman' and she's back with 'You must be joking, Oh man, you must be joking!'.

Sort of sorts you out I reckon. There's plenty of others...

  • That still doesn't explain it or answer my question. Sorry... you'll have to be clearer.

  • Stylophobia probably puts it better than I can down below.Basically the guy is deluding himself that he has been doing these things for 'his woman' but she's not fooled. He joins the army to try to find some purpose in his life.

  • Awesome. I was at this gig as an 18 year old and this clip brings back great memories.

  • Some fans regret the fact that they "sold out" by not being as explosively political as their first album.

But I think if you can bring subtelty and irony to your political message, it's actually a sign that you're maturing as a band.

  • Agreed. I recently picked up a comp of the Au Pairs, and my initial impression of them is less favorable for just that reason.. too strident and obvious. It's ok to have a point of view, but when you hammer it into my the head, it's less interesting to me.

  • Concert is Gateshead England. Song`s about the socio-sexual dynamic between a guy with no future "I had to regain my self-respect"-and a woman culturally conditioned to accept that power dynamic in theory if not in practice "she needed to be protected-HER :"you must be joking !"-the joke is that the guy himself "needs an Order" to define his role and purpose. Quite thought provoking. AND IT ROCKS !!! tHAT`S WHY THIS BAND ARE FUCKIN` GREAT !

  • well put.

  • to have ambition was my ambition...

  • Sara Lee really powers that whole song.

  • police, u2, the beat, gang of four, lords of the new church

the headliners 4 me were on second

  • The singer mentioned recently that the US Army asked the band if they could use this song in recruiting adverts ! The military meatheads somewhat misinterpreted the Gang`s political stance...as would be expected, the band refused the army`s request.

  • How yee whats wrang with the heed?

  • GATESHEAD?!

  • Sarah Lee on Bass, great tour.

  • the background vocals are quite powerful. Hasn't aged a bit. Great stuff.

  • I loooove GoF. I was shaped by British rock - I owe it so much, between this, the Clash and Wire.

  • was this at gateshead stadium

  • The BBC banned this song during the Falklands war...3 years earlier they banned GoF for mentioning condoms in a song. And people think 50 Cent is a "rebel ???!"

  • It's really cool when a guitar player has his own style, of all the new wave bonky guitars GOF has got its own sound. the whole anti guitar stuffs crazy...

  • one of the greatest bands..ever

  • Still profoundly relevant + after all these years = Timeless...

    A.Perfect.

  • fuck the police, this is brilliant

  • The roots never die. Thank you for having inspired the Punk/New Wave for centuries and centuries. Pierre (Lyon France)

  • thanks for this.U2 were also atthis.Gaspo."To have ambition was my ambition"

  • I first saw the GoF at the US Festival about this time. There are no videos of _that_ show, so this is about as close as I'll get. Great stuff

  • joder this is my music..gang of four los mejores......y los

  • Gang of Four rules!

  • Nobody doesn't like Sara Lee.

  • I Love her! Who is the other gal banging on the snare (no like Hugo needs help)?

  • Good stuff. My band at school covered that song (but we were better - only joking ;-) Was that the gig that was broadcast on The Tube? You don't have Call Me Up anywhere do you?

  • nope just these 2 songs...wish i had more from this show!

  • Fantastico!

  • a little fast and that is SARAH LEE ! Gang OF Four ! I love them .

  • Along with The Specials, Joy Division, The Fall, The Pop Group and The Jam...Gang Of Four were one of the GREAT acts to come out of the UK punk explosion.

  • i love this guys. gang of four forever!!!

  • Not as good as the original line-up but still compelling.

  • i enlisted after listening to this song and enjoyed serving my country and freedom anyway.

where did go4 move to anyway? portland,OR, USA...

  • Opening for the Police AND U2 at this show.

  • i own a guitar alot like that! yay!

  • I love 80s MUSIC YALL! IT ROCKS! To have ambition is my ambition too lol.:) Cool dance moves 2...

  • is that sarah lee on bass?

  • yep

  • Ok, Go4 was an important band. Their best song - "in the instant" (of course, my opinion) Does anyone have it?

  • absolutley beautiful.

  • You got any Entertainment era footage?

  • The other stuff I have from them is already up on youtube, so I didn't bother.

  • awesome. the gang's finest hour.

  • This is really fast, and live not so good. Is that Miss Fairground Attraction in this performance? or did she join them later?

  • It is a bit fast, but I like it better than the studio version - the beat is a bit looser and not as mechanical (the advantage of a real live drummer).

  • what a heap of puke sarah

  • I think it's a pretty smokin' performance personally...

  • your opinion but mine is its crap

  • You dig their earlier stuff more?

  • Who doesn't?

  • If young men listened to this song before deciding whether to join the armed forces or not, some of them might be alive to watch this performance instead of six feet under. One of the best yet humourous anti war songs ever. As they said in the song "To have ambition was my ambition" Nuff said.

  • Agreed!
