@JayIsntMyName - It isn't. It's NTSC (north america) perfect, verified. The other youtube vids (well, most of them anyway) on the net are wrong, in that the music is slower. Perhaps they are from PAL (eurorific) TVs?
@mraupp Weird, I guess don't remember it as well as I thought, and I I've watched too many other videos that were probably from the PAL format versions, You're absolutely right, of course. I booted up an emulator in NTSC and sure enough, runs just like yours. So, my apologies. Carry on. :)
I never had the 800 XL, but remember playing this on my 130XE. At the time, the music blew me away and friends of mine and I would sometimes just boot the game to hear the music. We knew that this was just the begining of something wonderful! Thanks for posting. I needed to hear that again.
Too bad there aren't games like this anymore. This was way ahead of its time. I can't wait for it on my IPAD/Iphone. If they change anything, I'll be seriously pissed and disappointed. That includes the best game music ever!!!!!!
It would be great if they remade mule for one of the consoles (wii, 360, or ps3)... They don't need to change a thing (if they update the graphics, give us an option to keep the old graphics).
I agree100 percent. People don't realize how good a programmer Bunten was. Clones have added fluff and graphics but then managed to mangle the game play.
Keep it the same but port it. It need to have 4 player option anything less is not real MULE..
@FtRapture I actually thought there was a possibility of this happening a few years ago.... Now not so much. They wouldn't want to make it unless it's going to sell a million copies (which it never would)... Oh well, we can dream (and play it on an Atari emulator! I have the one on Wii Homebrew, it works great. One of the few reasons I still use the Wii. )
This was one of my favorite Atari 800 games - my dad and I played it together more than any other. Thanks for sharing. I still marvel at the amount of subtle excellence - from the music to the demo animation (love the characters shrinking down to game-board-size) to the gameplay - that the Ozark Software folks squeezed out of my 48K computer!
Although i really like the Commodore 64s sound capability, Atari POKEY gets me every time with this cool sort of bassy squarewave, as used in this tune! AWESOME!
Actually, the big difference between the C-64 and Atari versions were that the Atari used all 4 voices, while they had to drop one of the harmony voices on the 64. Craig Chamberlain, who wrote the original "SIDPlayer" music system for the 64 extracted the music code from the Atari system to do an early demo track for SIDPlayer using this song and has detailed the differences on his SIDPlayer site, explaining how he had to try to merge the voices for the SID's 3 voices.
You have that backwards :) Ozark based the design of the M.U.L.E. on the imperial walkers from Empire, which came out some years before this game was made.
That's fantastic, thanks for the upload! I didn't think I'd have a use for this memory every again, and now I want to download an emulator and play it again!
Awesome game. The music from the C64 is what I grew up with. But the the version on you tube is not the right speed. This one is actually the speed I remember.
Nope, I was wrong. They are both the Atari version, but this runs on an American NTSC machine, with 60Hz Vblank, while the other one runs on a european PAL machine, 50Hz Vblank, hence the speed difference. This intro is just complete, while the other is sped up by pressing a console key. Hence the lack of specling in the other one.
I still can't figure out what's going on in the other Atari mule intro... It seems almost twice as slow to me (the 60/50 NTSC / PAL difference is something I hadn't considered). This was a response to the Atari version, but it's interesting with over 20 years of hindsight how much better the Atari version sounds (although based on views, more people are looking for the C64 version!).

The strongest point being support for 4 players at the same time.
The Atari accomplished more game play than folks realized at the time.
I'd still play River Raid but the joystick in the emulator just doesn't cut it.

@mraupp That usually seemed to be the case. I noticed that with many video game consoles of the time that sounded slower in PAL regions.
