It's not clear who these people were or what specific program they were lined up for. The video 'interviews' a few individuals who display ignorance, but it is fallacious to extrapolate the attitudes of others in line or in society from this 'data.' The disagreements in the comments section regarding which programs qualify as entitlements exemplify how difficult these issues can be to discuss--if we can't agree on what we are arguing about, how can we ever agree on what to do about them?

I'm considered legally blind. I have very low vision and can still see enough to get around and do work. I get SSI and Social security, less than $800 a month. I survive and I do what I can to make it. I am in college to become an Assistive Technology Specialist, thats a person that trains people who are disabled to use special devices and software to use computers and the internet. I want to work, I want to position myself to become a success. Not everyone on public assistance is bad.

@TheDevilDoctor1 One problem government has is in Information Technology, it's horribly inefficient and slow. Generations of hardware and proprietary software across multiple platforms makes for a nightmare to sort out. I mean come on, my local Social Security office is still using windows 98 on some machines. If they could make the systems more agile and communicate effectively across departments, maybe we could cut down on the fraud and waste so dead people aren't having checks cashed etc.

If you charge 25 dollars to apply for welfare there would be little to no cost on the government which means our taxes can stay low. Obviously there would be some waivers for the fee and waivers for persons who take medication but everybody would get one. This would cost much less than a new IT network, although it is not necessarily a bad idea. for maybe when the economy is more stable.

entitlements account for 3/4 of the federal budget. From the 60's - 80's the military budget stayed the same while entitlements grew. Enabeling people to stay poor, without the production of jobs is bad managment.

Wrong! Medicare,Social Security, and Veterans Benefits are NOT entitlements. Those programs are paid into by the recipient either by a payroll tax or armed service to the nation. And, like me, if you're an employer, you pay into Social Security and Medicare TWICE.  An employer MATCHES each employee tax payment.

Welfare, on the other hand, is an entitlement. The recipient does not pay into the system. The system cuts them a check. They get the money form the U.S. Taxpayer!

@georgetoon I regret to inform you, but there is no binding legal requirement for the Feds to pay Social Security or Meidcare. At any moment they can decide to simple end the programs. There is NO trust fund, the congress has spent every extra dime taken in via FICA since the mid 50s. As of this year SS is upside down, meaning it will pay out more than it takes in. Its no different than what Madoff did, only they have guns.
