Visited Barra in August 1970, the weather was bad so we couldn't fly over, we took the ferry from Oban, I believe(I was 11 years old). It was funny when one of the officers on the ferry asked where I was from. When I told him Florida, he said, "Oh, you're a Yank." I replied, "No, I'm a Southerner!"(not knowing they called anyone from the US, a "Yank.") My ancestors(MacNeill's) came to America in the late 1700's and settled in Kentucky. I'm a 6th generation Floridian...
My Grandad left Bharraigh (via Mull and Ft William) to end up on mainland at Nairn 1852 to escape that twat Gordon of Cluny! We were always told since then (and I tell my daughter) Barra's our 'REAL home. Window in chapel at Nairn commemorates this. BTW - Clare Grogan (Altered Images) is also descended from those who 'escaped' Cluny's eviction to Canada from Barra in 1852. Her folks ending up heading South to Glasgow. A special place indeedy. Have travelled a tad and nowhere feels like it!
I'd recommend staying on the island at any time of year... The locals recommend May, June or end of August to September - That way you miss all the tourists and you still get the beautiful weather!

Thanks for your answer. Do you also like bagpipe music? I'm a bagpiper living in teh Netherlands.

I've played the bagpipes for 5 years now... Still a learner, but I guess all pipers are - There's always something new to learn.
