I actually never really cared for this song until I heard this. In my opinion that defines a great cover when you turn someone onto a song the original couldn't do it for.
That being said, I feel like there wasn't enough passion or "hurt" in his voice. Tweak that minor detail and I think there's something pretty special here.
I just don't think these guys were born to run. : ) Which, incidentally, may not have been a romantic notion of restless yearning as much as an economic reality. Over the time of Bruce's career, a city like Johnstown PA went from 75,000 people to 25,000. So maybe that generation was born to wake up, grow up and move out. Maybe that song didn't "get people into cars" as much as just report that his generation wasn't going to sit on its hands and wait for the unions to fix everything. ; )
Hmm. I dunno. It seems to lack a bit of the feeling one has for the song if, say, your strong, WW II-vet dad spent his life in a hole in the ground around Johnstown PA and got his pelvis crushed in a rockfall there, or would be out in the garage at night in 20-degree weather trying to keep the old Mercury running, or the feeling of watching the Conamaugh River flowing through a coaltown in your school district in '77, all the while hearing the adults say, "What could be better than this?" ; )
