@ingravegreen To be fair, the 2009 stock is considerably faster than the 1967 stock. When the new signalling is fully in place, you will notice it more.
@ingravegreen I hate everything about the 2009 stock, the comfort, the sound, the digital voice. Clarke's spoofs on the 1967 made my day whenever I heard them.
Just an idea, trains on the underground generate a lot of wind, especially this stock as they are very fast and push a lot of wind through the tunnels. Couldn't they use the wind (as windpower) to power other things on stations or on the tube or maybe they do this already?
Just watched BBC London South East News 28/06/11. I thought so, check my comments before about heating on this new stock. Apparently once they turn on the heat regenerative braking system, the temperatures should drop. Hope so.
I know I go on a lot about the heat of these trains but the other day I overheard a passenger say 'wow, feel the heat!' as he stepped off the carriage, so it's not only me. It was really wafting up from underneath.
Cool trains, though (you know what I mean). I always say, "I'll take 'The Bolt' today", because it does what it says on the tin (most of the time).
I really like these trains, but there's a few things...
Looks like they spent all the money on the motors (very, very quick, serious torque) because the seating is the worst you'll ever rest your weary *** on, real pity.
I've also noticed (it seems) the motors kick out a real lot of heat. You feel it wafting up from underneath when they stop. This could be a real problem with a summer heatwave and the underground getting even hotter, reaching probably record temperatures. Be careful.
@LikeMindedIncident i love the noise the 2009ts motors make when the train stops.
haven't been on a 2009ts but i have seen it. i have been on a s stock which has heaters and air conditioning, the noise its motors make are similar to 2009ts but seem much quieter and you could hear the wheels more on the s stock. i like the louder motors of 2009ts though, it sounds interesting.
i can't wait till the new stock are allowed to travel faster, i heard 2009ts has the same amount of acceleration as the..
@bengo940 The difference with the motors is that the S-Stock uses the Bombardier MITRAC PM motor (permanent magnet) whereas the 2009TS uses conventional MITRAC induction motors. Permanent Magnet motors do have some advantages with being lighter in weight, quieter, and are even more energy efficient. However, PM motors are not widely used just yet- they are an evolving technology that is now just starting to be implemented. Both are much more efficient than their DC counterparts though.
Respond to this video... 1992 stock and i'm not sure about the s stocks acceleration but i've heard it's also fast. The s stock has a really good exterior but the interior is bland, i wasn't impressed with the interior the first time i entered the train, the seats were more comfortable than class 378s though. They should have looked at heat resistance floors and panelling for the 09stock as it's the one with no air conditioning.
@bengo940 Well, they're very quick. I joked on another post how these things can throw granny around, from one end of the carriage to the other. Tough braking too. Pity the Victoria Line is not overground at some points (apart from depots). That'd be really cool.
Perhaps they'll introduce this stock to other lines. Would be awesome on the Piccadilly Line.
@LikeMindedIncident i don't think 2009 tube stock could fit in other lines tunnels and i wouldn't really like same stock shared over other lines, it would seem boring. however i can't wait till s8 and s7 stock are running.
@bengo940 Yeh true, but the Piccadilly line could do with just that bit more speed. I believe my theories are true about heat however. It is just getting too, too hot on the VL. It's not from people, it's radiating from somewhere. It's either the heating (drivers forget to turn off later in day?) or from the motors underneath. No joke, got onto a carriage the other day and was nearly floored by the wall of heat. It is not real! And there's still summer to come!
@LikeMindedIncident somehow, although i haven't been on the s stock much, it seems it isn't warm without the heaters maybe that's cause it travels above ground and is more roomier than the 09 stock
Yes they zip about and make nice noises but I have to say I really prefer the old ones. The old ones were/are much more comfortable (seating, hand rails, arm rests, not to mention the fact that in some of the carraige this is only railing on one side!). They also seem to break down alot - virtually evry morning I am stuck in a tunnel with a 'defective train' ahead - I'd put money on it being one of the new ones!
@Rocktopus You know what, totally forgot - seating is all parallel now, no '4 seaters'. There are a few oldies left running with 4 seating but I'll miss that arrangement when they're gone.
@JFKFOREVER2010 they are more like the 1992ts of the Central Line in terms of Internal Headroom compared to the 1995/6ts which is a must in modern day society,
@sirmoorgate1994 The 1967 Stock is very comfortable whereas the 2009 stock is too clausterphrobic and the it becomes boiling hot in the 2009 Stocks.

@tommyboy6181 ok, that's a good fact to hear. I hope newer stocks use the PM motors then.

Fantastic video. Apart from the fact that these trains are more likely to break down than the old trains I still love travelling on them. Well done!
