This is really great stuff. I've never heard anything quite like it--what are some of your compositional influences? And where did the impulse to improvise over through-composed music come from?
Thanks for the kind words. Compositional influences: No particular order: Bach Beethoven Mahler Wagner Stravinsky Bartok Debussy Ravel Schoenberg Berg Ligeti Dutilleux Lutoslawski Ellington/Strayhorn Coltrane Miles Davis Improvising of through-composed material is nothing new, really. Many composers just write their improvisations out. Also, many big band writers such as Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider, McNeely etc,. have players improvise over composed material. For me, it's "normal". Thanks!
wow, wonderful playing! i have both of your cd's and they are just amazing. you're such a great trombonist and a stunning composer! your writing is amazing! you're one of my favorite trombonists and i really look up to the way you play and write. thanks for doing what you do! you're playing inspires me to become better and i'm sure i'm not the only one.
