My Mom got picked from the audience to do this back in 1978. The footage we have shows more people falling all over to simulate the crash. I agree with the earlier comment, I'm sure they toned down the actions of the people due to liability. Good times.
Wow! I remember this audience participation show at Universal Studios in the late 70's! The big finish to the show was getting a couple of tourists to jump out of the 747 into the pool.
They could never get away with doing this sort of thing today, but for its time it was exactly the type of thing Universal Studios was famous for.
I was in the show when I was in the 4th grade and wish I have the film or video to watch it again.
