should invest in a mantis field and brush mower. I know money today is tight take it from me. I am an unemployed 1/3 of the year and 2/3 under employed carpenter.
Very good man!! Kind of reminded me of the Blair Witch Project, with the camera movement and all. LOL. Wish I was at your dining room table this winter! Lovely!!
I would like to know how you can tell when to harvest the potatoes. We are in a warmer climate (southern TX) and do not have a frost to kill the leaves. Thanks for your help.
Here's a way to get loads of potatoes in minimal space with minimal work. Basically create a circle with chicken wire, plant your potatoes in the center of it (1-3 depending on size of circle). When it grows up good, put some straw around the stems and leave a little showing. Repeat till the whole circle is filled with straw. When harvesting, remove the circle and sift through the straw.
I would not grow any edible crop in tires due to outgassing- similar to pressure treated wood. Better to hill them up or mulch them heavily like a lasagna garden. Do the work, enjoy the fruits.
The easy way I grow potatoes is to grow them in stacked old tires (raised bed) then when its time to harvest just unstack tires. If you have loader tractor it easy use large tires if not use regular tires
That must be a hell of a lot of digging getting all those potatoes up! How do you dig over all that land to prepare it for next year's planting - hand dig it? Plus, do you dig in manure each year - farmers here in Poland always do this ... the kids are certainly being a help which is good to see.
Great repost!!!! You are a good man!! I wish I could get out of where I am and do what you are doing (only on a much larger scale!!!) I'm tired of relying on the government!!
wow my friend you are in potatoe heaven, look at all of those spuds. you might consider getting you a lister plow to use on your ferguson tractor next year if you all keep growing large patches of potatoe's. make's it alot easier getting them out of the ground, my dad use to raise a lot of potatoes like that as well and his old lister plow made it like nothing to dig up a whole patch in a day. great video my friends.
the tater farmers around here burn the fields of stalks before harvesting... man summer went fast. i just harvested my taters yesterday... first time i grew them. they were all different sizes and some of them still attached to each other
hey man great vids..i restore and use a two wheeled garden tractor called the david bradley check them out sears and robuck sold them in the 40s and 50s they are real handy and have alot of attchments look into them u would be real pleased and are fairly cheap.....keep the vids coming..
I'm not sure, the plants seemed to die early and I think I waited to long to dig them up and they were rotten, been the only year that happened though, does that sound like the blight?
Great vid. Nice team :) Looks like you grew some nice sized ones. I saw a peek of the greenhouse in this vid. I have been really curious about how it yielded in the end. It's probably still giving you new green tomatoes isn't it?
I have often thought about what it would be like to live off the land. No electric, no gas. You need to cut wood for fires, cooking, cleaning, everything!! I probably wouldn't last long though!! LOL. Anyways, great video man!!!!
We didn't get our garden in this year and now I wish I did. I got it plowed under again and hopfully we will make use of it next year. Good luck on the potatoe hunt.
Very informative....good show chap

The tops should still start to turn yellow when they are done and ofcoarse you can dig up a few and you will see how big they are but about 90 days.
