@onefugowie well, actually many people mistake the germans for starting ww1. Serbia started ww1 by killing the austrian president but the germans did play a big role in sort of making ww1 into a world war. and yes, the germans fought well but they still got their asses kicked.

@m1grand70 it was a bosnian serb nationalist, gavrillo princip, part of nationalist group wanting to get out of austro-hungarian empire who killed franz ferdinand. austria responded by attacking serbia with german consent, & this caused the russians to mobilize & kicked off alliances into war. the smaller entente alliances are interesting but mostly overlooked as focus is naturally on main players, but serbia,belgium,japan,greece,ro­mania,portugal all drawn in to war against central powers.

@Evilfisher, more along lines of 3/4 of German forces were always committed to the brutual Eastern front, and while defense looks good in newsreel they just didn't have the resources to run a defense on two fronts

No wonder why germans collapsed totally in Belo Russia during summer 1944. Armygroup Center got any aircover at all - only about 40 serviceable daytimefighters agains Soviet airforces of 6000 aircrafts. Huge majority of Luftwaffe fighters were in Reich, Italy and west. And already in autumn 43 about 2/3 of german fighters were operationg just against US 8th Air Force.
