I believe that he was taunted in school. There's no way he wasn't. At my high school, boys were not allowed to twirl batons, be cheerleaders, take home economics or even shorthand. Girls were not allowed to take agriculture classes or woodshop, play football, etc. Students who cross those lines are always targeted by bullies. It has always been that way but hopefully people are growing up wiser now. I don't know that he was bullied, but I would be very surprised if he weren't. Good luck!

Our family has watched Jonathan in parades since he was alittle guy and we have but one thing to say...you are great, Jonathan Burkin...many times I would see him and comment to family that he is so good and would just go to the parades to catch a glimpse of him doing his "thing". I think it's awesome for a boy to come out and do this. I'm a Baton Twirling Coach and would love more boys to do it.. makes the sport more entertaining and adds a different element to it. You can dance, do gymnastics etc without being gay (and really who cares anyway). This guy was awesome.. Neck rolls are hard enough.. let alone adding FIRE to it. ive just got back from the world baton twirling championships in Belgium, where Jonathan won rhythmic twirl and 2 baton. He was very popular and England loved him!! GO JONATHAN xxx

me and jonathon hung out at his room in twirlmania 2009 and even though theres a 5 years difference we both had a blast with each other...he really is a great guy and i love him to death. and he said while doin thoughs back neck rolls he burnt a few hairs...lol GO JONATHON!!!!!!

I think it's awesome for a boy to come out and do this. I'm a Baton Twirling Coach and would love more boys to do it.. makes the sport more entertaining and adds a different element to it. You can dance, do gymnastics etc without being gay (and really who cares anyway). This guy was awesome.. Neck rolls are hard enough.. let alone adding FIRE to it. Hope he does really well and good on him for promoting such a wonderful sport!! Hope we can do the same down under

Not to say he has talent, but i can say that he is kinda a jerk. Maybe its a defense thing because you know " he's coming home everyday in tears" but, regardless of that, he's a very talented person, as well as a very pompous jerk.

Just so you guys know... Baton twirling started as a "mans" sport and women were critized for doing it!!!! Its really sad that some of you are gonna watch this and have nothing better to say then 'its a little gay'! Why does any of that matter and also why does it matter that he was an ass hole in school maybe he had a reason to be like that to you! He is a natural and amazing at what he does. He also teaches his talents to kids! I have never found him to be anykind of anything but a role model

If this guy got ridiculed his whole life and has been called a million offensive names because he likes batons... well, no wonder he became a jerk... I think he never intended to be a jerk at all, but after that many blows to your talent you tend to be very defensive, up to the point where you become a jerk... so... good for him... he is a jerk with talent... if everybody would have laid off him, he would have been a nicer guy...

Just so all you know...I graduated with this kid and he was a total ass to everyone! Though you might say he was retaliating the bullying....I just think he was a jerk... He is good with sticks which is why we all think he is gay on top of not dating at all and wearing glittery outfits...come on were solid colors!

Jonathan is an incredible young man with or without the batons! He's honest about the bullying, but he always arose to the occasion.

I can't believe how awful people are. Baton twirling is extremly difficult. It takes endless hours of practice, determination, and guts. People calling him gay need to go get a freaking life. If they think its so gay or easy, go try it for yourself. People are just ignorant. He is absolutley amazing and I look up to him. Leave him alone for goodness sakes.
