I've listened to Elton John's version, Mr. Collins version and this version. In summary I must surely say that Mr. Elton - as original composer - made the best version. In contrary to that Phil Collins really arranged a new version of the song that's really impressing from the aspect of rhythm! And the TOTO version is just fine because of the atmosphere - it's a little bit darker.
I Like this cover! It has that TOTO flair but missing Jeff, drums are a bit weak, but still enjoyed it. Thanx for sharing, thought I heard everything they have done but not this. Love "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". One of the best covers ever!
Thanks for posting this, however, why no pics of Bobby, just David, Luke & Mike? No Steve or Simon (and one old glossy of Jeff) either. Funny (odd) that in so many Toto studio videos Bobby's been cut out even though he's the "voice." Take Africa for example. Again, thanks for posting.
Several years ago, after a Toto concert, I had the honor of hearing Bobby perform this solo on piano at the after-party. I told him then that he should record this. After hearing him perform it at a few more parties over the years and suggesting he record it again (and again) he handed me the Through the Looking Glass CD. WOW! He is truly one of the most generous and talented people I've ever met. Sad that Toto's done but I hope the members continue to make music.
This is a superlative cover of this song!! I love TOTO. I'm so glad they are still playing together. It's wonderful to see artists still around. Groups like Toto, Elton John, the Doobies/McDonald, Steely Dan--they were all ahead of their time. Now as they've gotten older, they seem to have "grown into the music." With age comes experience, and they bring that life experience to their music now. Wow!! Thanks for sharing.
unfortunately Toto isn't together anymore. the only 3 original members left were Steve Lukather, David Paich, and Mike Porcaro. Mike was told by a doctor to quit due to illness. David retired from music. according to Steve's website on June 5, 2008.
"If there isn't Paich or at least one Porcaro with me, how can we call it Toto? This is NOT a break. It is over. I can't do it alone, and I don't want to." -Steve Lukather.
thx Toto for the times you did give us. we are grateful. peace.
the last album with Mike Porcaro was "Falling In Between" in 2006. after that he received a hand injury that prevented him playing bass. for "Falling In Between - Live" and the tour (2007) the band brought in session bassist Leland Sklar on a temporary basis, hoping Mike's hand would heal. but it never did heal properly afterward.
Respectfully, you forgot Bobby Kimball, the VOICE of Toto. In the 60's there was Burton Cummings, the 70's brought us the late, great Brad Delp of Boston, and the late 70's brought us Bobby Kimball - also one of the originals. However, your sentiment regarding the thanks to Toto for all the great music both live and recorded that they've given us over the years is shared by Toto fans world-wide.
Toto has had many voices over the years. there was also Joeseph Williams, Fergie Fredrikson, and Jean Michel-Byron. but yes, you're right, Kimball was one of the originals.
Hey Kohl, Thanks for your graciousness. IMHO Bobby was both the first and the best which is why they cycled through so many others before coming back to Bobby. It's a shame as they really gelled with Falling In Between - they wrote and worked as a unit. The addition of Greg Phillinganes on keys and vocals was their most significant change since Simon stepped in as their drummer when Jeff passed on. Shame we won't hear more from this unit as they really captured something with this album. Alas...
lol. touche. if we're on the subject of Kimball, i'd have to say my own favorite since his return would be "Live in Amsterdam". its got so many of their old stuff done really well, and with some refreshing changes ("Rosanna" kicked a lot of ass on the Amsterdam album) but "Falling In Between" is a good choice as well. and while we're on the subject of originals...sorry fans of Simon Phillips...i love and respect his work. but i enjoyed Jeff's drumming more than Simon's.
Hey Kohl, you have good taste all around (IMHO!) Jeff was the master of the groove. His chops were evident by what he didn't play as opposed to what he could play. Simon is an absolute alien. The things he does are other worldly, and he's a great guy too. However, there was something about how Jeff drove a song that was truly special. As for Bobby, he could sing Row Row Row Your Boat and make it the best thing you ever heard (IMHO). I'd die and go to heaven to be able to sing 1/10th as well!
This version was originally arranged by Phil Collins when Elton John asked him to chose one of his songs to perform on his Two Rooms album. Still great.
i know they played on caribou before they became toto, but had no idea they were conniseurs of mr. john' work, and this , the best song from the best album elton ever made, is quite the tribute did paul buckmaster rearrange the orchestra or is that all their own ?

When I was a kid Bobby used to sit in my living room and play and sing for hours. My dad was a coke dealer in the Hollywood hills back then.

Very good cover. I've always loved the respect and "props" a good cover gives to the original artist. Well done.
Mostly, though, I just like the song, too.
