Alan Hovhaness - Symphony No. 22 (1/4) City of Light

Some of his work, like this, has me metaphorically on my face in ecstasy. I am a mystic, more narrowly a christian mystic than Mr Hovhaness, but this evokes to me the Presence of the Most Holy and Terrible.

I am very fond of Alan Hovhaness' work, But i do regret that when i tried to get the conductor of the symphony orhcestra I was a member of to peform some Hovhaness he refused.

But this conductor was "wine women and song", he understood nothing of the mystic or the divine

@oepsewoeps In Nederland hebben ze het te druk met Mahler en Sjostakovitsj.

De Amerikaanse symfonie is een ontzettend rijk terrein maar het interesseert de Nederlandse concertprogrammeurs niet. Van een groot componist als Walter Piston wordt in Nederland nooit een symfonie uitgevoerd. Gelukkig zijn er cd en internet.
