The attic is a critical scene in Jack's character development; it reflects his newfound ability to be close to people (Joy's influence being crucial here!)
You will obviously notice that I have joined together 2 parts of the movie to make a continuous dialogue and added a couple of lines. The first extra line was to show that Joy had just left hospital and a long walk might be too much. The second, that Jack might want to show at a most crucial moment that he loved her. I know there was no doubt, I just wanted to make it obvious in terms of a short clip.
I love this movie too. I have been doing a part time acting course and thought I would do this scene out of Shadowlands. Please find the link. I would love to know what you think. Just so you know, I hired the car for NZ$100 but the rest was an unpaid project. I copied the original music. This was not for profit but for my own enjoyment.
Anthony Hopkins's scene with Debra Winger was so poignant -- the way he pulls her to him and kisses her passionately, a man who until that point hadn't really allowed himself to feel everything he felt about her dying. He was resigned to it, but he never embraced, really, the physical need he had for her. And the scene with Jack and Douglas ... that was heartbreaking. He was trying to shut down, but Douglas (just like Joy) knocked down all of his barriers ... and he felt the pain.

the deep void is like being haunted by a ghost. it's sense of intuition that is a constant reminder

it's a tremendous void deep within that can never be replaced or filled.
