the blocks that can have mobs spawn on them are better,because light level are kind of difficult to control.

4:have a piston to control a lava current,pull the lever and the lava will fell into the arena and kills all the remaining mobs and your xp ores and equipments.

Suggestions:

1:bring instant health potions instead of golden apples.

2:make the ceiling much lower,so the whole arena is only 2 blocks high,and the ceiling,the ground and the wall all use different materials to make,so that if you aimed your mouse a little bit too high,it would make the sound of hitting the ceiling,if you aimed too low,it hit the ground,and you can identify the difference between those.

3:instead of using light level to control mob spawn,I think using piston to create

hey etho just a little tip, when you were trying to use your sword to attack but instead was using your bow, you can switch items by using the mouse wheel!

Try just turning the monitor off so you can still see the Keyboard and mouse controls but not any of the mobs :-)

When I saw the thumbnail, I thought this was at bedrock level with only 1 ray of sunlight shining down.

A bit dissapointed when it wasn't that, try it Etho :D It wouldn't be hard to make, dig to bedrock, mine out a circular area, install the spawners, pistons etc. Turn to survival :D

A powershell script to slow down the vertical mouse movements. On my system it was enough that it would make a difference for the video. Copy pase the raw into the powershell ISE, hit the run button, alt tab to minecraft and close the menu. If you need more time to set up recording or say something, increase the wait time for mouse center detection. Should help you keep the camera centered vertically.

Number one problem I saw was that you kept pulling your mouse up and since you weren't looking, you didn't know. I think that if you put note blocks on the ceiling it'll help you know when you are aiming to high because when you hit the note block it makes a sound.

An alternative to this could be to put the player in a hole (1 and a half blocks deep), so s/he can focus on the number keys and the mouse. Skeletons should be on then, maybe less or no food and how long you survive should count, too.

Rather than turning the monitor off, I think this could be a more interesting challenge if you could see the room but all mobs were invisible.

So I just spent the last half hour making a texture pack that makes all hostile mobs transparent. You can still see the particle effects when they spawn, but other than that, they are completely invisible. (Unfortunate side effect - bows are also invisible).

@martinplaysminecraft I like your idea, it has potential. You can fix the spawn particles too by going into the Option Settings in the Escape menu and changing "All Particles" to "Minimal Particles". Good idea though!

I had a HUGE problem, I tried this about 10 times. at first I sucked pretty badly but I found myself some good tactics but everytime I died, I accedently hit "Respawn" like immediatly so I never caught my score. I also tried vidding it but I hit the respawn way to fast to even see it. unfortuneally because I'm 100% sure I actually did pretty good the last time, until a creeper came from random darkness spawn fml -.-

So I tried this thing out - I love the concept - but here's the issues I adressed:

* Getting the mouse to a horizontal level is too hard (as you also mentioned) - I usually do best in the beginning where I already have my mouse there.

* Doing this challenge without being able to record your screen (or have a friend watch) defeats a lot of the fun of it, since you're likely to miss your score and you won't be able to learn from your mistakes (since you don't know them).

Etho, a couple of things you could have done:

1) Instead of covering your eyes, cover the screen with a sheet of construction paper.

2) Practice flicking your mouse so that you're aiming at your feet, then resetting your aim back to the horizontal.

this is an interesting concept but it seems to me like it is almost purely luck...... the big issue is the lack of appropriate audio settings in the game...... this kind of thing would be best played in a spherical room with specialized surround sound speakers that give u a very accurate idea of what is around u in the game..... good idea but it needs work
