it is real apparently the director of the movie of this is a massive star-wars fan and he just put the R2-D2 in there as an Easter Egg from what i was told.
It turns out that R2-D2’s guest spot is something of a recurring theme of films featuring the handiwork of Industrial Light & Magic, the special effects company owned by Star Wars creator George Lucas, with the robot also having recently cropped up in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Its not fake. I've seen the movie a million times, listened to the commentary (in which they TELL you its there). Its just something they do for kicks. Awesome, if you ask me.
Sad That JJ put this in deliberately. Note to all the people who think that Industrial light and magic did this on their own: ILM has been making special FX for Star Trek since 1982, and they never did anything like this before on any of the 8 Star Trek movies or 500 Star Trek episodes they worked on. Only Star Wars nerd Jar Jar Abrams would do such a thing to Star Trek.
@simpsonfan13 I have watched The Battle in First Contect in hi-def. low def, slow motion, fast motion, and even in color shift. I CAN'T SEE IT. If it's there Were the hell is it!!? If you see it, it must be like the ghost in "3 Men and a Baby" every one sees it but it's not there! Period!!!
@workstrength - I don't think it's really revenge. The effects for Star Trek 2009 (as well as a few of the other ST films) were done by Industrial Light and Magic, which is owned by Lucasfilm. It's most likely an easter egg the effects crew threw in.
If it wasn't for JJ's freaking lens flares we could probably see it a little bit better.
In my opinion....he used the lens flares as a distraction. Either to cover up flaws in the overall design of things or just to fill you optic nerve with overloaded stimulus.
@NICKREAPER316 Amen to that. And as you said, it's just an opinion. IMO, I think Star Trek has deeper moral values and better plot devices, more intricate character development, and an emphasis on diplomacy and peace. Star Wars has a very rich history and lovable characters, as well as a wider variety of alien species and fantasy technology. It focuses less on the tech and more on the story, which it tells very well. I just prefer Star Trek for nostalgia reasons as well as a love of peace.
@NICKREAPER316 Um, didn't you just contradict yourself there buddy? No one opinion is correct, so if you think your is correct you are an idiot, does that not suggest that I am wrong for having my opinion? So then if no opinion is correct, how can I be an idiot if being correct is my opinion and therefore is not wrong? Furthermore, if me being an idiot is your opinion, then me being correct is no less wrong. Think before you speak... eh, type.
well that's you're opinion, and there's nothing wrong with that, but that doesnt mean my opinion, or yours is wrong or right. if someone actually had an argument about that, which lasted for 2 hours, they should be awarded a plaque that says "congratulations, you had the time and patients and such a non life to not only create but sit through this entire piece of shit. you've proved you're nerdiness, now go fuck yourself" .......wow i got carried away there...
@NICKREAPER316 Ah, you fear I am right. Hence the unneeded and childish swearing. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering, suffering makes you eat cookies, cookies lead to the dark side! Come back to us! Nooo! Too late, he's gone. He's on the Lucas side. Roddenberry is better. Not saying I hate Wars, I fuckin love it, but I prefer Trek 'cause it's more fun and deeper. Plus, Wars is Science Fantasy, Trek is Science Fiction. So it's a tad bit more realistic. XD
it's true R2D2 was the only character in star wars that servived his hole life and he still lives to this verry day so he's the one that lived on to star treck he's gotta be somewere in thoes movies if he's the star of star wars he's able to apear in witch ever one of these movies that he would like to plus he's the greatest star wars character of all time he's my favorite of all time too by the way it has something to do with the story of star treck..............................................
this is true....right when they enter vulcan space where everything is smashed, the enterprise leapes downward trying to dodge some remains of a ship, it scratches one of the engines of the enterprise and he's there right when they make like a 1st person view of the command center of the ship
Ya got me! Its a total fake. I played the movie back, and saw something there but it was too small.. So I brought it into a video editor and put R2D2 in myself in the exact same place and the exact same frame everyone else claims to find him!... Busted :(
welll i acctually did see him....or what appears to b him... i mean there is a little white thing on screen but not sure if it is him... the power of suggestion is strong

@Trekfreek what about the millenium falcon in Star Trek first contact?

@TOK150. That was just a rumor. It was only there through people’s imagination. Just like the "Ghost" in Three Men and a Baby.

@Trekfreek Strangely, Leonard Nimoy is connected to both of these films.
