solid shot might pick off a number of men but it was grape, cannister, exploding rounds (shrapnel) that wreaked the REAL havoc on infantry and cavalry.

However in the age of sail, solid shot worked great because a round passing through the side of a ship would pepper the inside of the ship (and everyone standing nearby) with splinters and debris, wreaking terrible damage as the shot passed through (not to mention riccochet inside the ship)
