@romero6788 Yes, the best way is to place them in the freezer on a plate or baking sheet so that they don't stick together. Then once they are frozen, you can place them in a plastic freezer bag :)
Hey there - I made these tonight - both steamed and deep fried - and they were a WINNER - beautiful.....thank you. I also made the shrimp and vegetable rice rolls - my kids think I'm soooo clever now...hahaha.
@53531640 No, you can just freeze them. I usually lay them out on a baking sheet with wax paper and freeze them. Once they are frozen you can remove them and place them in a bag. Then when you cook them cook them straight from the freezer - don't defrost them first :)
Thanks for the vid. One bit of stylistic criticism, however. You need to eliminate the phrase "go ahead and..." from your vocabulary. Rewatch this video and listen to how often you use those three words, which add exactly zero to the meaning of a sentence.
@Mustang5516 I usually have the stack of wrappers that I'm working with and just lay a damp papertowel on top. Also, sometimes I place on on top of the plate of finished wontons so that they don't dry out and crack as well :)
@Mustang5516 To keep the wrappers from drying out place a damp paper towle over them while making the wontons. Also, placing too much filling in the center will sometimes cause them to tear as well :)
I was wondering myself about the dipping sauce for the fried wontons. Do you have a recipe for that? I had that in the restaurant and I could only make out it had soy sauce, ginger, green onions, sesame seeds and something making it sweet. Are you familiar with this sauce? It was served with the pork version.
The soup, and the wontons came out awesome! It taste just like getting it from a restaurant, which is nice, because with having a family, we can't afford to eat out much these days. The food was a huge hit for my kids. I have to buy some more wonton wrappers everyone loved the fried ones for munching on. Also I didn't know Publix was in other states, I thought it was a Florida chain, that's why I thought you lived there. I sure do miss it there.
Hi, just wanted to say I made Wonton soup, and it came out fantastic, just like I've had in the restaurants. I am going to make fried ones now, with the other half I have. I was wondering, I saw in your Chinese chicken stock recipe you had a Publix chicken. Do you stay in Florida? I used to live there, and hope to be back there soon.
@Mojosfire Hi - I'm so glad you liked the soup. I'm not in Fl, but my grandmother used to live there on the west coast in a little town about an hour south of Sarasota. It is so beautiful there and though it is mainly a retirement area, they have the best food and the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. I hope to visit there again soon :)
@blackberrie86 Hi - you can use ground beef - I actually make the beef version for my husband - he doesn't eat pork either. I'll be posting a ground beef wonton video soon as well :)
@Slappingplastic Yes, freeze them on a baking sheet first so that they don't stick together. Then once frozen you can place them in a freezer bag. Then to reheat I usually boil them straight from the frozen state :)
@Dragonlady66 I use all of the same ingredients but subsitute the inside with vegitarian soy sausage and egg subsitute, leave out the salt if its listed on the package ingredients already. Not the already form cooked kind of sausage patties but the kind in a roll like regular raw sausage.
If you don't eat soybean meat products. Add all the ingredients (salt/ginger) to finely shredded slaw mix (cabbage and carrot) don't need the egg if there is no meat or meat product at all.
If you're allergic to peanut oil look for another low smoking to non smoking oil such as corn oil. It has a simular burning factor as peanut oil. Vegitable oil it the highest smoking oil and it intends to cook your items to fast and or require you to change out the oil before you finish batches,
Is there any way you could possibly post a video with the recipe for the lovely dipping sauce that you can always get with the steamed wontons? Ive always loved making steamed wontons but i can NEVER get the dipping sauce right. Pretty please with sugar on top. :)
@AsianCookingmadeEasy Thank you so very much.. this will definitely make my roommate happy.. lol. he loves the stuff and i cant figure out the recipe.
Thanks for making this video! I am a vegetarian and am probably going to use this method accept replacing the ground pork with wither tofu or mushrooms. I love wonton soup!
I usually buy them pre made - but if I do make them I just use a mixture of water and flour. About 1/4 cup of water to each 1 cup of flour. Just knead it until it forms a dough; let it sit for about 15min, then roll it flat and cut it into squares :)
To make wonton soup I usually just use chicken broth with some ginger and green onion added. I simply cook the wontons in the broth and add the green onions in towards the end :)
If I make pork and shrimp wontons, I usually just use 1/2 pork and 1/2 shrimp and basically the same seasonings as I used here. I sometimes add a little sherry - just 1 tsp and a little sugar 1/2 tsp as well :)
For the soup I usually just use chicken broth. About 4 to 6 cups, and then I cook the wontons in that. Once they are done I add some pepper and sherry to taste and then a few chopped green onions :)
I usually use a soy ginger sauce made with ¼ cup of soy sauce, 2 tsp minced fresh ginger and 3 tbsp rice wine vinegar. Sweet chili sauce is also great with the fried ones :)
what if during frying the outside is cooked and not the inside. how do i know if the filling is cooked properly. also can i substitute pork with something else?
If the outside has cooked before the inside, then turn the heat down lower. You want to try to keep the heat at about 350 F. The filling is cooked through once it is no longer pink.
Both ground shrimp or beef make great substitutes :)
I'm wondering about the cooking time when you boil. Do you really need 8-10 minutes? I read some recipes that only say to cook until they float to the surface, some that say you need only 2 minutes (with 1 tsp of filling) since you don't have a lot of pork. I'm just wondering since it is pork and I don't want to undercook or overcook. Thanks!
This is an interesting question. It does depend on how much filling you place inside. I always worry more about undercooking pork rather than over cooking it. I normally boil mine for 8 minutes. Usually when wontons overcook they start to break up and fall apart. One exception would be if you use shrimp inside, then it may overcook quicker. The best thing to do is check it after a few minutes and make sure that the inside is cooked through. If not, check again after another minute :)
whenever you use oil to fry stuff, do you keep to oil to use again later, reusing it several times, or would you discard it and use fresh oil every time?
@debauchery73 Are you serious? She can cook and does seem knowledgeable BUT that voice is so fucking grating and annoying would not make for a good host!!!
I usually use purchased wrappers, but to make them you can just use about 2 1/2 cups of flour to 1 cup of water. Then just knead the dough, divide it into about 40 peices and flatten them into discs. Then they can be filled :)
No, the main difference is that the egg roll wrappers are much larger than the wonton wrappers. As far as thickness, in the grocery stores they are usually the same - however wrappers do come in different thicknesses, especially if they are homemade :)
I'll have to try this one! I have tried another recepie which is good this one looks a little cheaper to make. Good idea doing the frying outside to keep the cooking oil smell and mess out of the house. Also the only problem with wontons they take forever to wrap LOL! Thanks for the video!
I have been looking for the dark brownish sauce that is served at buffets and when you order out with boiled pot stickers. Some times they have a little green onion floating in it. From all the cook books and other recipes I have seen the sauce is never discussed. I tried soy sauce, balsamic vinegar and some green onion but it just tasted awful, perhaps too much vinegar. Any suggestions? I guess each restaurant makes it different unless they buy the sauce premade, but so far all taste the same.
I usually just mix together a little dark soy, regular soy, and hot chili garlic sauce. I did find another recipe which may be more what your looking for. I'll send it to you through youtube mail :)
I actually love eating the boiled wontons in a bowl with just a little soy sauce and vinegar sprinkled on them. You can also serve them in a bowl with a soy ginger sauce on the side for dipping or topped with a bit of sriracha :)
Hi is it possible to prepare them ahead of time? say, do them at night and cook them the following day. Will I store them in the freezer or just in the chiller?
Yes you can make these ahead of time and freeze them. Just line a cookie sheet with wax paper. Then as you make them place them on the paper. Freeze them, and once they are frozen remove them from the paper, place them in a plastic bag, and return them to the freezer. This way they won't stick together. Then when you want to cook them you can take them directly from the freezer and add them to the boiling water :)
Did you buy the wonton soup from the store, or just the frozen wontons and then made your own soup? Sometimes wonton soup has little strips of roasted pork in it. But if it is the ground pork coming out of the wontons then they probably were not sealed properly.

is egg roll wrappers the same as wonton wrappers?
ca559 2 years ago

Also do you really need to use peanut oil or can vegetable oil do the trick just as well? A difference in taste or how it fries?

I usually just mix together a little dark soy, regular soy, and hot chili garlic sauce. I did find another recipe which may be more what your looking for. I'll send it to you through youtube mail :)

Another great installment!
I've only seen the boiled versions in "Wonton Soup". Are there other serving suggestions?

I actually love eating the boiled wontons in a bowl with just a little soy sauce and vinegar sprinkled on them. You can also serve them in a bowl with a soy ginger sauce on the side for dipping or topped with a bit of sriracha :)

Hi is it possible to prepare them ahead of time? say, do them at night and cook them the following day. Will I store them in the freezer or just in the chiller?
chabamjae 3 years ago
Yes you can make these ahead of time and freeze them. Just line a cookie sheet with wax paper. Then as you make them place them on the paper. Freeze them, and once they are frozen remove them from the paper, place them in a plastic bag, and return them to the freezer. This way they won't stick together. Then when you want to cook them you can take them directly from the freezer and add them to the boiling water :)

thanks for the respond>>
but i bought wonton yesterday and there was loose pork in the soup, but how? i think it has to be fried or something, right?
muneca540 3 years ago
Did you buy the wonton soup from the store, or just the frozen wontons and then made your own soup? Sometimes wonton soup has little strips of roasted pork in it. But if it is the ground pork coming out of the wontons then they probably were not sealed properly.

very understandable :D
can you use a different type of onion?,,,,,
but the one the chinese sell, they keep in the water, and the water haves flavor, so the boil ones, you just eat them like that?
