  • how fucking boring

  • i hate when people speak mumbling

  • Try google to find fusion Roto tutorials or examples. There should be some out there. Also check the fusion site and I suspect there are fusion user boards. Search for visual effects forums that have fusion users or sections.

  • hi i want some fusion roto basic tutorials plz help me frnds

  • Everything shown was done in Commotion, a program I wrote and which was sold around the world. It was purchased by Pinnacle, which in turn was purchased by Avid. And of course Avid no longer sells or develops it.

After Effects has some fair roto tools. Silhouette and Mocha are two other roto tools. Nuke's roto tools are still lacking.

  • @scottvideo Go Scott Squires!

  • fairly simple examples and I love how you mention how they're used in the real world. I've learnt more "old school" knowledge from you than my university module in animation (in 20 mins). I did learn a lot of flash techniques though. What program are you using? anyone know?

  • U are the most boring person ever!!!

  • Great video keep up the good work.

  • thanks for sharing this rotoscoping, good to use. thanks

  • @navyman4 You kidding, this guy rocks!

  • ugh, monotone. Sounds like some of my teachers.

  • Great overview that Scott. I particularly enjoyed the animated sketch at the beginning, I've never tried that.

  • Evidently you didn't actually watch the video. This is rotoscoping and that's what's discussed here. The end results are indeed composited to show the results of what the rotoscoping provides when finished.

  • how do you cut out a actor without a green screen?

  • Hu ? I fell asleep

  • cleveland? is that you?

  • haha the monotonal voice had me watching the whole thing without realising it was 20 mins long

  • Oh shi ALMOST HALFOUR VIDEO

  • Goodbye, rotoscoping method!

  • Very useful ideas and mentioning the films helps viz new ideas and concepts.

  • awesome and awesome voice

  • This was all done in Commotion (owned by avid now) which is no longer sold. After Effects and most compositing programs have roto. In addition there are now specific programs to do roto. None of these are free but you can download trial version to try out. If you're a student you can get the programs at an educational rate.

  • @scottvideo I don't care about any of that stuff. I STILL miss my Commotion!! :(

  • can someone give me a link to dowload the program thankyou

  • amazing video, amazing guy.

and actually I kinda like the monotony of his voice, it is easy to listen to.

ah... and amazing tutorial of course.

  • Green screen isn't the solution for everything as noted in the video.

If you want to simply put a creature into a scene you're not going to want to shoot a background plate and then shoot and match the fg plate just to avoid rotoing. There are many tools and methods for vfx and you have know the tradeoffs to make the right decisions.

  • Stick with green screen and image stabilizer

  • WOW. Very informative. Thanks for Sharing

  • I have made an animation ( human face close-up) using stroked rotosplines, however I have a lot of "open gaps". Could you tell me the best option to paint this animation without having to paint frame by frame? I guess the paint bucket toll will be useless on the open gaps. Thank You!

  • Absolutely fascinating. I didn't realize that all those other effects were covered by the term 'rotoscoping'. I hope you wont mind if I email you with a few questions?

  • Commotion it`s an amazing program, and even after all these years it`s still UNBEATABLE. I still have my pro version running great on my "old" HP TC1100 tablet pc, and I can do EVERYTHING with this babe.

Thanks Mr Scott, for making the best and most intuitive rotoscoping software ever.

  • Like It!

  • I was just wondering if the intro could be any longer?

  • Are you the G-man's brother?

  • All hail Ralph Bakshi

  • Excellent. Your rough not-super-close trace job, is infinitely better than my accurate very close trace job. :)

  • Is this a text speech program?

  • this guy makes me want to sleep.

  • If this was AE and you had the clipping problem, wouldn't setting the blending mode to screen let you see through the mask?

  • serious?

  • youre voice is not really a 'background-video-voice'

  • kids dont go to these rip off media colleges and lose thousands in school loans like i did buy a mac a book and watch these videos and of course the software fuck RIP OFF colleges, everest, full sail etc teachyour self

  • Thanks for the tutoring but man, but please GIVE IT SOME EXCITEMENT! You teach like this in a classroom it doesn't need to be more than 10 minutes max. and by the end most of the pupils are either ran away or dead because they became mentally impaired then as a final escape, suicidal!

  • Scott you have done a nice program! Can we find it somwhere?

  • @AGAMISOURE The program was called Commotion. Avid now owns it but they're not smart enough to sell it so you'll have to make do with After Effects or some of the other programs out there.

  • @scottvideo Commotion is a clever name. I hope avid to find some brain.

  • @AGAMISOURE Adobe Flash is a great program for rotoscoping.

  • thank you Sir. Very useful

  • boooorrrrrrriiiiiinnnng....

  • @jezielcamar26 STFU

  • @PhantomAct huh? did i say that? sorry dude. someone must have open account. sorry dude. no offense.

  • It's a good tutorial and has really good information

When people say it's boring - they mean about his voice - which i agree with....

However I want to thank you for showing us and spending your time doing this :) it's very helpful... keep it up dude!!

  • he aint boring, the video is very useful ive seen most of the stuff but alot of people aint.

  • this guy is boring....

  • Well go make an interesting version.

  • @godly80 u ungrateful scumbag, at least @scottvideo is contributing to a knowledge base, what do u do with ur time? Masturbating to ur sh*tty videos!

  • Can we get this guy to say "I'm an electric car. I dont go very fast, or very far"

    PLLLEEEEAAASSSEEEE say it

  • Comment removed

  • @godly80 No this guy is not boring. He just goes into the subject on a deeper level, unlike others who are much more superficial. If you hear him out, you'll come out much more educated.

  • Old school teachings passed on through Youtube, so glad that people are spreading knowledge this way

  • anyone knw where i can download commotion?

  • Comment removed

  • Sorry scott, what programa are you using here?

  • All work shown was done using Commotion. This was software I wrote to do rotoscoping and painting. This was sold by Puffin Designs, which was sold to Pinnacle which was sold to Avid. Unfortunately Avid doesn't sell Commotion even though they now own it. Another lost opportunity for them.

  • Dude! You've been nominated for Oscars! You should mention that, I'd tel it to everyone I met.

  • That's funny I was actually going to comment to say I really liked his voice. Then, I saw the other comments and thought, I always like things other dont

  • wat program do you use to do this mate?

  • A great example of rotoscoping is the animation version of Lord of the Rings. The main characters where done with animation, while the enemies were done with rotoscoping.

  • and also by the same guy: wizards (where he started using roto due to budget "complications"), and fire and ice.

  • Scott, this is some awesome insights you share with us. Thank you. I'm just getting started on digital compositing etc. and this was very helpful and gave me some ideas.

  • True! *takes wallys gun when hes done*

  • Agreed. Take the gun after weswally is done. BANG

  • Thank you for sharing this "how to" for roto work. I've used commotion in the past for cable removal while at another facility, but have switched to Apple Shake. I've posted a video reply, "Front Row Seat" trailer, that follows the matted & corner-pinned opening titles with an articulate roto as the host leaves a full studio, says a few words, then opens the door to reveal the same room completely empty in one continuous shot. (time ramp in trailer is kept RT in actual release)

    Thank again!

  • 21 52 ??????? how did yo do that?

  • you just keep playing it.... -.-

  • I wonder why they never invented a way to change the Shape of a mask in After Effects, so that the points follow a number of specified motion tracking points... I don't see how it would be hard at all.

  • right

  • sorry, what program is it? AE?

  • This was Commotion. Currently owned by Avid.

  • tom goes to the mayor

  • The audio is very low...

Try to get it around -12dB

Some more energy when talking to your audience will also keep their attention.

    Good job.

  • You try not to trace every frame. That's why an image is split into the moving sections or body parts and you only change the points when you need to. The computer calculates a spline for all the frames inbetween. If it's slow moving you may only have to do the start and end frame If it's fast action you may have to do every frame.

  • So in rotoscoping...basically your just tracing the original film, frame by frame? Wouldn't that be extrememly tedious?

And then at the end...it's like your doing a keyframe cropping effect...but does that tie in with what you were doing with the tracing at all?

  • > tedious

Yes it is. That is why advanced tools were developed to

make it easier and faster but there's still a team of people on a feature film.

The tracing or roto essentially 'cuts' the matte so the image can be composited.

  • Great video.. but... you have some issues with the typography... nothing major

  • thnx 4 the vid! i really apreciate every frame of it! XD

  • rotoscoping is awesome, if you have some free time check out my music video Call Me which is all rotoscoped, it took me like 80+ hours

  • rotoscoping is awesome, if you have some free time check out my music video Call Me which is all rotoscoped, it took me like 80+ hours

  • can u rotoscope with sony vegas?

  • 1:15

  • This was all done with Commotion, a visual effects tool now owned by Avid. Y basic composite with some editing programs but if you're taking it to the next level you need a real compositing package such as After Effects, Shake, etc. that are designed for these tasks and not editing.

  • What video editing program is being used here?

I recently made a year 12 studio art project entirely on green screen with my own drawn backgrounds (in homage to Sin City/Sky Captain...) in Final Cut Express, and found it a bit hard to get my head around, but this seems a little more sophisticated.

  • A question if I may. In the past, say, 15 years, I have seen such a growth of green-screen out of, in my impression, nowhere. What is the benefit of green-screen over blue-screen, sodium-backing, etc. Also, this was terrific, and I love your work. And, Pleasantville is very impressive and recommended as you mentioned.

  • Greenscreen allows blue costumes among other things. One of the main reasons for greenscreen is video tends to work better with it, especially any of the compressed video formats, because green is the luminance channel.

Both blue and green are used a lot in digital and part of it depends on constumes and part has to do with availability, costs and lighting. Sodium is depended on 2 strip camera so a matte can be shot at the same time (modified technicolor camera).

  • Thank you.

With video, can the image not be changed and matted so that any solid background can be used? Or does the video and compression not allow for that flexibility.

  • I guess I meant that with digital manipulation, does the traveling matte background always necessarily have to be green or blue, since everything can be so manipulated. In film, I can't recall any examples of infra-red but I remember it was an available process to an extent. Technically, can a traveling matte be achieved by constantly changing the background color in post to accommodate the foreground element. We should be able to do that and keep log of the dynamics on computer without problem.

  • good

  • cool vid. the voice sounds like a robot

  • Thank you. I really appreciate you taking the time to show us this.

  • BADASS!

  • YEAR OF THE FISH is an entire movie in rotoscoping!

    trailer here: yearofthefish [dot] com

i really love the painterly, otherworldly, fantasy effect...

  • what program are you using?

  • All this was done using Commotion. This program has since purchased by Avid but Avid isn't selling it to the public at this time.

  • hey um, you worked on rogger rabbit? where you part of ILM? cuz i have been trying to contact someone who worked for them for a long time.

  • I was with ILM. Freelance now. They have a website with info but they don't tend to deal with the public.

  • i know!! i was trying for a long time to contact someone for a school project. ILM is like of religious status in my opinion, what can you tell me about working there. how difficult was it to get a job there?

  • I remember people trying to contact ILM in a similar way before the new Star Wars trilogy, and it was pretty open from everything I could see. No problems. But after that, when the new movies came out, not so. I think they had too much traffic.

  • ...damn

  • thanks for teaching. you talk really low, almost made me fall asleep, but all was very useful....

  • awesome... great tutorial. It is nice to see someone sharing what they know without charging an arm an a leg.

You should think about doing this on a syndicated basis, where an advertiser pays you to show a commercial at the beginning of your video; this would enable you to create more videos and turn a bit of profit.

  • your videos are way too long

  • How did you upload a video longer than 10 minutes? They limit me to 10 min.

  • I think part of it depends on the compression and amount of data.

  • That rule is relatively new, it wasn't a rule before so old accounts who started before that rule can still upload any video, but the accounts created after that rule (which are the most on YouTube) are limited by that time.

  • Scott is one brill dude for sharing such knowledge. Brillaint tutorial.

  • ok thanks

  • how much did that program cost

  • As I recall the last price for COmmotion Pro was less than $1000 and Commotion LE was less $500. LE was actually packaged for free with some products such as Final Cut Pro for awhile.

  • I just got Final Cut and really want to start learning the world of rotoscoping. What program would you recommend/is the best that I use...can I use final cut or should i buy something else?

  • Final Cut is limited to an 8 point mattes so it's difficult to do more than garbage mattes in FCP.

After Effects and most compositing software have basic roto tools. Avid may be re-releasing Commotion at some point.

  • Great info. Thanks. Do you recommend studio artist or silhouette roto? I can't find commotion.

  • It's been awhiel since I've dealt with either. Studio Artist is more about creating art and less about do vfx roto. If you're doing extensive compositing you're probably going to need something beyond FCP to composite. Try out the roto on whatever composite program that is (After Effects, Shake, etc) and see if it's sufficient for your needs.

  • if oyu want the best roto in the industry, GET SHAKE.

  • dont get... BUY IT

  • What is the program you used to do this?

  • All this was done using Commotion. This was made by Puffin Designs, which was purchased by Pinnacle Systems, which was purchased by Avid, so Avid has the rights to the program.

  • Great work! But what of us independant filmsakers that can't create or afford an green screen? What other tips you can give us?

  • Actually none of this required a greenscreen. It used rotoscoping to create the mattes. This makes it more timeconsuming but without issues of the greenscreen. Some basic editing programs offer simple roto or matte tools although a VFX program is best. Affording greenscreen - actually you can go to the craft store and buy the purest green fabric or green poster board you can. It may not be perfect but you shoudl be able to do basic greenscreen work.
