  • I mean her season's best was 52.12 and then out of nowhere she scores a 70?

  • Joannie has an amazing physique, which enables her to perform with such surity and stability. I think we're going to all have to admit though that her 70 score here was inflated because it was going into Olympic season and everybody was inflating scores to favor their national champions. Anybody a scoring expert out there? What should Joannie's score realistically have been? Personally I think Czisny skated the sp better here. Anyway, Joannie went on to the Olympics to win Bronze!

  • I'm in love with Joannie's transitions going into all the jumps (they have to be the best internationally), love the choreography, and I love her interpretation and attitude. Great music for her.

  • This really is an incredibly good skate. The spiral she does out of her double axel (on her landing) is so beautiful.

  • Yes she is a fantastic figure skater, but given her competition she did not perform to podium level. She has NEVER placed on the podium on any international level competition before(& probably never will again)& there is a reason for that. Her competition,Kim Yu-Na & Mao Asada are sensational & flawless.Rachel Flatt landed all of her difficult jumps solidly,Joannie almost fell twice.Politics is not supposed to come into play when scoring but in history the scoring has been corrupt & they are human.

  • @christmaszorro: how did you figure she never made it to the podium on any international event before?! She did 15 times before Vancouver, including wins at Skate Canada, Trophée Éric Bompard and a silver at the Worlds last year! o_O

  • @christmaszorro So WRONG!! she's the vice champion of the World in 2009!!! she's six times canadian champion!!

  • @christmaszorro before you comment, google JOANNIE ROCHETTE and you will see that SHE HAS BEEN on the podium long before yuna and mao did. FYI: SHE'S RANKED NO.2 in the WORLD, MAO 3rd, YUNA 1st. duh!

  • I think I'm in love

  • wow. she rocks. very strong program.

  • She definitely performed well, but I think there was a slight inflation of points due to her homeground advantage. 65~67 points would have made more sense.

  • True! She had an awful GPF this weekend, but she did last year too. I think her programs are difficult - they push her to an edge. If she can pull it off, she'll get the silver.

I accidentally clicked on "statistics and data" for the first time on my way down to reply to you. Very interesting (and a little amusing) to see which two countries (and Canada and the US aren't either one of them) have been watching this video - and commenting, and downgrading the rating, no doubt!

  • Hello jamarsano ! I am interested in seeing the statistics you are talking about but can't seem to find the right place to click. Where is it exactly ? thanks !

  • They are on this page, underneath where you click to make a video one of your favourites.

"Statistics & Data" - it unfolds when you click.

  • Great job!! She's so adorable - Makes music come alive every time with her performance!

  • Joannie's programme was choreographed in such a way as to rake in the points. The foot work connecting into her jumps, the linking of elements, her foot-work (few cross-overs, lots of edges) and speed - all these get her points.

Her lack of risk (no 3-3) means she doesn't lose points unnecessarily trying to beat a skater (Yuna) who is unbeatable at this point.

It's not as exciting as watching Mao skate and wondering if she'll hit an axel. But it rakes in points with elegance and little risk.

  • I think her landings should be worked to get more natural....

  • no, not that high

  • I love figure skating and I truely appreciate to see wonderful performances. Whether it is Mao, Yuna, Joannie or Miki, they are all incredible athletes that deserve respect, encouragement and support. It doesn't serve any purpose to post insults or nasty comments. Joannie is not "weird" as you are saying. Having followed her career for the last 7 years, I can say that she is a mature, poised, elegant and generous skater. Congratulations Joannie and I wish you the best !

  • I've just realized how fabulous the beautiful Joannie must be based on all these nasty comments about her.

Skating fans seem to be terrified she might beat out one or other of their preferred skaters and so they waste time criticizing an incredibly solid performance by Joannie - the second best jump technique in the world after the wunderkind Yu-na, lovely spirals, a spinning boot that travels not an inch, and super-super-super fast foot-and-edge-work - It must be seen live to be appreciated.

  • you must be one of the judges at skate canada. Is this what you guys were taught to think before the competition?

  • No, I'm not a judge. I used to skate, but so does every little Canadian girl - we're forced to.

I just know that this is a better programme than the one last year at worlds.

That programme was scored in the high 60s, so a mark of 70 wasn't a shock.

Do you think last year's programme was better?

  • C'mon! This program, as solid and well interpreted as It was, didn't enough technical content for Rochette to score that high. Her jumps weren't that impressive and her layback spin was a very weak one (I simply don't understand why she got a level 3 for that one). In general, she was overmarked, I'm sorry to say.

  • Actually, I agree about the lay-back.

It gets a level-3 because of the way she enters it and the change in shape. Little quirks in the points-code make that possible.

I've seen Joannie live twice. You can't imagine how fast she is and how smooth her footwork looks from above - my seats were nose-bleed, but the effect was great.

  • besides there is mao's fan prentending like yuna's fan. like when they pretend like chinese when they post ugly yuna bashing vids.

  • Over marked, once again. The last person that got 70 without a 3x3 was sasha cohen. but at least she was a beautiful skater. Can someone please explain to me what the judges possibly see in rochette? i mean seriously, and rochette's obviously NOT in the same level as yuna. not even close. She's not even in the same league as mao, if mao was more consistent. I don't see her as a threat at all, just a boring skater that every judge loves apparently.

  • I strongly disagree with your comment.

I do not understand why you take a Korean skater..

    Just enjoy Joannie's beautiful skating.

  • ISU, We need JUSTICE! PC score to low

    of Nagasu, Suzuki and Zhang!

  • why are you talking about Koreans watching Joannie's SP? you guys are very intentional. Please take care of your disastrous Mao princess :)

  • @barthes Mao is not disastrous. She is very graceful, unlike other skaters- like the one in Korea who is more technically adaptive than Mao. Mao's spirals are over the top and generally I do not like to see bullies posting nonsense about Mao, Not especially in Joannie's forum

  • Nice program, but taking a look at her protocols her PCS and the Grade of Execution seems quite a bit higher than usual. (And considering the symbolic meaning of the '70' mark :=|) It would have been better if she stressed certain moves over the other and gave more dynamics to this La Cumparsita (I've enjoyed her summertime program much better) Overall a nice program, but it'll be interesting to see how the judges grade her program at the Grand Prix Finals.

  • hnji96/ Just don;t feed the trolls;; It's not like people actually believe them.

  • I love her performances as always.

    So powerful and smooth

But after i've checked the SP protocol, i was pretty shocked with GOE on her SlSq

She got all +2 GOEs on her step sequence...

    SlSq Lv.3 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2

    That's too much....lol

Anyway, She did a good job...

    Here is Skate Canada.

  • this was good...but not a 70 good.

  • Joannie looks nothing like a man, nor a little stick-like girl, but like a woman (which is what she should look like).

Yes she is not perfect all the time, but she is human, and that's what makes her so much more interesting.

What has this world come to? I hope you will reconsider your comments or get a life

  • このロシア人のアナウンサーはやはりいい。

  • I like Joannie. If you see her live, you'll see she's not just muscular, but very flexible and elegant. Still this time, I have to say she was overrated. I don't think she's THAT satisfied with her performance today, and probably knows well that's not enough to beat Yuna. I think Lepisto was much overrated than Joannie this time. I like her alot so it hurts me to have to admit. But most of her points belonged to Zhang and Akiko.

  • her reaction say it all, she couldn't believe it herself

  • the olympic will be in Canada thats why!

  • LOL. Rochette's PC score is 31.6 and

Mirai's only 24,Caroline and Suzuki 's poor23, judges, please let me know what's going on here?

  • What is with all the hate here? I like that fact that someone else in the skating world is moving up against YuNa, without having the boring piece of crap we call judges and skaters, while YuNa is skating far away from anyone. The fact that Joannie has at least remained competitive so far is a good indicator for the Olympics. At least there will be a challenge for the top.

  • hate? please, great performance, but not worth the hate, and definitely not the score.

  • No no no! That would be Costner.

I think 70 was too high, but I've seen Joannie skate live, and she is really good.

  • you have a point, but her GOE scores should not be 1.8 on double axel and triple flip! and her SS scores almost in the 8's?

  • Yeah, I've got a lot of doubts about the GOE and PCS system. They're all a bunch of subjective views by the judges, that's why each of them often differ on the same performance. And I agree about the 2A. Though I basically think none of the skaters should be awarded that much for a 2A in seniors.

  • that was a good performance, but a 70??

her pcs mark is onlly one mark difference with yuna's dancse macabre in the world final championships in 2009. whoa~ talk about home advantage.

  • what's going on here???? 70???!!!!!!!!

  • Did you see her scores? Her TES isn't much higher then Czisny's (38.40 and 36,60), but her PCS is 31,60 (Czisny has 26,92)! She won because of her PCS and this is very subjective score! And Virtue/Moir get a huge PCS for their OD instead of her two falls during the programme!

  • LOL.70?! If judges use this way

let Joannie on the podium of Olympic 2010, I'll not watching figure skating again!

  • ha funny that might actually happen. I can so see it. Pity I'm canadian i should be supporting my own country's skaters, if they're actually good and they deserve the marks

  • Just like I'm American and I have no problem understanding that she is way better then the Americans. :)

  • i get ur point, but judges do make mistakes sometimes, so i think it's not only fair but important too that everyone can speak out their opinions about the scores, u know. i think joannie did better than alissa, not sure about the scorings, but she definitely deserved to win. bet most people think that way, okay? so plz cool down a bit.

  • Boring...Not something I want to watch more than once.

  • can't believe it. ppl go watch Alissa CZISNY performance...and check PCS scores.

  • ok, her jump is pretty good, but she doesn't have 3-3. her spins, spiral, step are really nothing special. so why all the sudden her PCS is inflated this much? I don't get it.

  • This time i agree with you.

  • Comment removed

  • honestly, 68 may be acceptable.

  • Comment removed

  • what was with the judges?! watch Czisny's programme and then this . The judges should have awarded the higher scores to Czisny. I love both skaters, but Rochette is stiffer than Czisny. Their tech content was almost identical, but ALissa's spins & spirals were better. This high score will do a psychological number on Rochette in the future.

  • PML. Czisny was boring and stiff. Her presentation consisted of smiling throughout the program and a few random hand gestures to the accents of the music. Rochette skated to the music the whole time and had far more complex choreography.

  • 70??mi sembra un po troppo come punteggio!!

la trottola rovesciata non era un granchè e gli angeli non erano molto veloce mah!!

  • Her footwork is so slow and ungainly and her spiral sequence leaves a lot to be desired. I can't believe she got 70 for this relatively uninspired program.

  • if 70-where is 3-3?

    Anyway-Woman on ice,great to watch!

  • To get the 70,Yuna had to the "3+3",steps right before the jump, choreography after and between the jumps, difficulties, qualities, artistry and consistency.I agree that Joannie did the good job but 70? Maybe Yuna won't have to do "3+3" anymore then.I don't dislike Joannie, I'm talking about this professionally. Like I said she did good and beautifully. I'm happy for her but to get 70,there should be more difficulties and challenges I think.

  • okay. this can not be 70, 68.50 is enough even though it's in Canada and she is Canadian.

  • Congrat to Joanne. She was awesome. But ..70? Wow~

  • Comment removed

  • Joannie is a great skater with perfect skating skills but I still don't understand why she received 70 points. Especially when you think about the fact that she didn't get the highest level for all of her elements...

  • sancurotte

    お前は黄色人種ではないのか?

    頭は大丈夫か?

  • hey. don't include Yuna Kim. There are clearly huge difference between Yuna's performance and Joannie's.

  • When i read online that she got a 70 i thought wow, she must have finally landed a 3-3 (I remember Yuna's 2007 world SP when she reached the 70's, so maybe Joannie did something close to get those points) But after seeing this program, i feel that the extra points might have come from the positve GOE's of her elements? Anyway, i like the program. very clean! but i personally feel it should be around 68 or 69.

  • No wonder considering that this is skate canada and she is canadian

  • Looking forward to GPF and it will be very interesting. I just can't help laughing. I feel like something is going on......

  • what the hell.......... 70??

  • She did very well. I give her credit for that. but 70 for triple-double? Something is fishy here... and if you see her personal best scores both SP and FS come from Skate Canada... and I think I've heard that Canada has been caught lobbying the judges.
