Merchants still had food and goods to trade. My grandmother's gold jewelry collection fed her family for a year.

I agree accept currently I see no point in gold. All I have is silver boolean (no coins). I also agree with personal protection but I chose the 7.62 weapon of choice. If there is a disaster of any kind I know my AK still work no matter what. For CQB I have my Glock 17 and KaBar. However these would be useless with out proper training... certified in ICS and ITK; training on a semi-daily bases. I say semi because I'm out on injury from sparing (muay thai). Not paranoid, just prepared.

I don't think there is any one "right" answer as far as how much silver you should stockpile. You should divide the money you have available between emergency food (MRE's, Mountain House freeze dried foods etc.) water, medical supplies, self defense, and silver. Silver is fine alone in just an inflationary situation, but with hyperinflation and most certainly during major disasters, riots and unrest will occur. Supplies will keep you off the streets & lying low until its safe.
You need at least silver but also guns/ammo. NEVER barter guns, ammo, food,water! - the must haves. I have spent 2 yrs preparing but you can be ahead of 99% of others in one day of buying and prepping. Silver, long-term food, water, medical supplies, a secure area (+guns to protect). Barter-I have cases 50 ml vodka bottles plus honey (lasts 20+ yrs). 99% of people won't survive a month but you can! Easy and cheap! Don't freeze up in fear as most have! Do you know anyone who has prepared? NO!
