MS didn't "rip" anything off. WPF and XAML have been around for years. Silverlight has much less of a learning curve than flash, and it uses traditional scripting languages rather than the very difficult to use actionscript. Silverlight also better integrates XML than flash does. WPF/E is just the new implementation.

Why in gods name would someone opt to create files in totally "new" formats for this "expression" software when the same end result can be had in much more efficient ways using flash? Also -- the "desktop" experience he is describing as being "new" isn't new at all, it's been used in the Macintosh format as "widgets" for many, many years... and they work just fine in rss/xml/flash formats. WTF, Microsoft? This is junk!

The platform was developed by a third party called Creature house; acquired by Microsoft in 2003. Flash was developed for kiosks originally and has a lot of legacy overhead that adobe has attempted to counter with Flex with moderate success. The silverlight platform is able to integrate much easier with AJAX controls by exposing Ajax "hooks" as part of its default engine. It is a very clever system regardless of who developed it.

Obviously you have never ran a server before. I have 4 servers, and all of them use Linux. It would be suicide to use Microsoft.
