I know a good way for a cobblestone generator.

You should put it like this:

Dirt - lava block - nothing - nothing - ice block - dirt

Dirt - Dirt ---------- sign ------nothing - dirt - dirt

In that way almost all the cobblestone falls on the spot where the sign is placed. You can just stand above it and pick it up when you're done.
