The main drive behind Better Place is the idea of replaceable batteries as a means of extending the longetivity of the drive experience. Tesla, while I think has a great product line, is still a charge only vehicle with a minimum of 45 minutes per charge. That requires a significant change in driving habits, which is difficult.
Government backed monopolies have worked before, tv was once a monopoly and so was radio. In the long term its monopoly won't last as current petrol stations convert.
This guy is taking too much credit. His buisness model is to get in bed with governments around the world in order to establish a monoply on fueling electric cars.
The world will not be a better place if this gets to be the case. Think of petrol stations, that was not something the government invented or was needed for.
Tesla Moters, for example, have already put an electric car on the market. Its a roadster, goes from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds. Looks good too.
Once more cars like these come onto the market, i mean cars that people would actually want to own, then there will most likely be a need for some sort battery change or chargers at parking lots etc.
This guy should just make his product, and try and sell it. No need to get government contracts and monopolies on this. If this will be the case, i serously doubt the world will be a Better Place.
Yes better place are trying to make money, every body nevermind business does that, but what Better place is trying to do is to create the infrastructure that the car industries can use, they have stated on several occasions that they do not want the monopoly on this tha all cars mus be from better place but that like the petrol stations now we all know what to do because they all work the same way its universal around the word.
1) I don't doubt a bit of the incredible success to come for better place.
2) One serious question to Shai Agassi : his company's model focuses on clean energy exclusively, hence since EdF (nuclear) will built the infrastructure in France, can he ensure that his model will apply to EdF, I'm especially thinking about the behind the scenes software and commercial model?
Shai is just so funny, and smart and smooth!
