many people who play lowdens say they're almost exclusively finger picking/percussive guitars. i was warned to at least not buy an S-model for strumming. i spoke to someone who strummed several lowdens and he described it like this: the notes wouldn't blend and harmonize as well, it seemed like it was unbalanced and every note tried to be the sharpest and loudest. i would love to hear your input on this, are they versatile guitars which also sound great while strumming? your videos sound great!
@mcFifo2007 Thanks for the comment! It is true that many people prefer to use Lowdens for fingerstyle, but I wouldn't say that you couldn't use them for strumming. The S series has a different voice from your typical dreadnought, but that doesn't mean it won't sound good while strumming. It just sounds like a Lowden! So, like most things in this field, it really just boils down to preference. Hope this helps!
I'm not sure if you'll reply, but would you mind telling me abit about Cedar guitars?? I'm currently looking for a new guitar after playing a classical for like as long as I can remember. I've been told not to get guitars with spruce tops, but solid spruce, or solid tops. Its really hard finding a guitar that isn't just a plain spruce top that also has a cut away. And I've found one that has a cedar top...Is that any better??
@ChaniBabii Cedar is common in classical guitar tops as it tends to create a warm, thick tone that is a nice compliment to the sound of nylon strings and is desirable for the style. Cedar is a softer wood than spruce and when using cedar it is safer to use nylon strings because they create less tension on the top. Spruce is stiffer and generally creates more volume and punch. In either case, solid woods are ideal as they are far more resonant than laminates. Please feel free to call us!
Walnut has some traits that are common in maple, but it also shares tonal characteristics with ash (particularly in the low end) and other woods like mahogany and alder. It is somewhat rare in guitars so to really understand it you must try it for yourself!
@soundpurestudios by what i can tell by the video it sounds a bit snappy/crisp as well ... ive got a peice of 50 year old walnut that im using to make a guitar and im trying to get an idea of what it would sound like ... thank you for your help
@N4GW We find the walnut to be similar to a maple in response, which is a bit brighter and clearer than rosewood typically. However, given the compliment of certain top woods, could still produce a good amount of bass and mids. It's a different flavor, you know? somewhat exotic choice for a guitar, but many players find this to be very pleasing. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! We have some Lowden Guitars in stock and place special orders all the time
@paigepopejoy The mics used were a pair of Schoeps CMC64 ST (the stereo kit), which are amazing guitar mics. One really cool aspect of our website (if you follow the link below any of the videos), is that the video tab below the product displays all of the products used to make the video (including not only the guitar, but also the entire recording chain such as the mics, preamps, and converter). Check it out! Thanks for watching and let us know if we can help with your pursuit of recording!
I don't get why it sounds bigger than your F23c demo, which is cedar / walnut as well with a bigger sound box. The F23c demo has a rawer sound somehow. Can you shed some light please ?
I like the cedar / rosewood combo a lot, but loved this S35, so it got my interest in the cedar/walnut combo, just too expensive. So I thought I would like the F23...
@cheul There are anumber of reasons why this may sound bigger. The microphone distance, type of microphones used, how hard the guitar is being played, and the focus of that soundhole, while smaller, could very well pronounce the mids and treble a bit more.
Are you looking for a Lowden? We would love to talk to you more about the options they offer and what we have in stock
@franneck1989 wow! that's great news! We have a variety of Lowden guitars in stock as well as many other comparable brands. Call or Email us any time if you have questions. and thanks for checking out this video
Honestly, these mics are totally accurate, and very neutral. We have absolutely no processing on these recordings, so they are picking up exactly what the mics are hearing... pretty impressive but these Lowdens have an upper end sparkle and sustain that is truly magical. We are in love with these guitars... feel free to give us a call to talk more about them, we have a truly world-class revolving collection. You can reach us +1 919-682-5552
Lowden is really catching my attention. Their prices aren't however...I'll be playing a few of them this weekend and if I find one that I really can't live without I will probably come to you guys to check out some more since I appreciate the work you do so much.
they say that clairo walnut and a ceder top has a so sound just right for celtic finger style. this is a good sounding guitar. i have an alvarez yairi ay20 ,a well ballanced 000style guitar,i think its in the same league as this s35
Glad you are enjoying your Alvarez. Our experience with Lowden is that they are really doing something extraordinary. They really have a unique and brilliant set of tonal qualities.
FYI, Our shop is in Durham, NC. Since dealer costs and list prices change and we plan to leave these videos up forever it makes putting a price on them a little problematic. Just e-mail, or call us toll free 888-528-9703 if you haven't already!

How does the walnut compare to some of the other woods like Rosewood. Does it have a more warm tone than some others?
