By Englishman I think they mean all people that could enjoy 'the rights of Englishmen,' which included fair trials, security etc. These rights were extended to all citizens in the UK, and perhaps some commonwealth countries too I'm not sure.

A great performance (and I hit "Like"). But who was in charge of the subtitles? Were they drunk or did they not speak English? The subtitles for Trial by Jury are totally wrong, too.
As great as being English is, there's really nothing wrong with being a Russian, French, Turkish, Prussian or Italian either! Or for that matter, American, Mexican, German, Japanese, Chinese, African, Indonesian or Icelandic!
@AmericanEvita I did mention African. It's right between when I wrote Chinese and Indonesian. Most definitely Africa is a nation, a continent, and Africa, as diverse as it is, should be a united nation, I wish it was, but I've been to South Africa and they see themselves as being apart from East Africa or central Africa. If only it was united, but yes it is a nation/country to my eyes.
The lyrics at the final part are not quite correct, must of the cast are not singin "for in spite of all temptetions,,," but "for he himself has said it...".
Any ways, i'm really glad for yu to upload this, it really is a great song!
@solefthanded2 As an Australian I shall accept your congratulations :) We're quite proud of our Opera Australia. They always do a very good job of the G&S operettas. They did Fladermaus (sp?) this year though, and it was equally enjoyable.
@Mullahgrrl Exactly! After the additional singers, including the women, join the song, the lines they are singing do not match the subtitles. They are singing: "For he himself has said it, and it is greatly to his credit, he remains an Englishman, and he is an Englishman." The printed lyrics only have one these four lines correctly.
@skcusderf Each year Opera Australia does a musical/operetta aimed at the general public: many of the people this is aimed at wouldn't understand the significance of the cross of St George as opposed the the Union Jack. To many Australians, England and Britain are the same thing.
Huzzah! I am also an Englishman! I like the way the lyrics talk of the 'temptations', but deep down, round the corner, and past the homo-erotic fantisies.... everyone LOVES an Englishman!
This was a play made during the height of the British Empire, as such it uses the Union Jack. Further more, even if he is an "Englishmen", they are on board a ship of the Royal Navy, not the English Navy. And why in the world will they use an Australian flag?
I think the use of the English flag would be a thing of the past; like us we could use the Union Jack but always use the Australian flag. Anyway I've only seen the UK flag in all the plays of this tune, all made in the UK (or England?)
@balancedaustralia If he was a true englishman he would use the Georges cross. BRITISH BY BIRTH BUT ENGLISH BY THE GRACE OF GOD. Great version of this by the way!
Why, if he is an ENGLISHMAN, is there a United Kingdom flag at the back.... Should it not be a George Cross, or, are English and British the same thing?
In the 19th century, the two words were largely interchangeable. English normally meant British. There are letters written from India from Scottish workers in the 18th c, who claim their pride in being 'Englishmen'.
Taking it in modern context can make it confusing.
Just a little but more or less in keeping with G & S style. I have heard much worse - for instance, the otherwise splendid Proms version on YT would have been so much better with a stronger chorus.
As an English expat I watch this everytime the local Asians get on my goat.
